Chapter 5

I left the two silver pens resting untouched on the torn settlement contract.

"You're making a mistake, Maeve," Declan warned. His eyes narrowed, daring me to challenge him.

I picked up my phone from the oak table. I tapped the red square in the centre of the screen, stopping the voice memo timer at twelve minutes and four seconds.

"Siobhan Gallagher just received an audio file," I said. I held the screen up. The sent receipt flashed bright green. "It contains a very clear offer. You trading a fake criminal embezzlement allegation for my silence."

Declan’s posture stiffened. The arrogant slope of his shoulders vanished.

Isobel stopped smiling. She touched her emerald brooch, her fingers suddenly restless.

"You recorded us?" Finn asked, stepping forward. His voice cracked slightly.

"I protect myself," I told the boy. "I taught you to do the same. Remember that."

I slipped the phone into my pocket and grabbed my tote bag.

"A recording won't save you," Declan snarled, bracing his hands on the table. "I control the estate's board. I control the trust. You will not see a dime."

"I never asked for your dimes," I replied. "I will see you at the will reading."

Seventy-one hours and thirty minutes later, the iron gates of Blackwater Estate remained padlocked against me.

The interim trust committee had moved fast. A security guard at the gatehouse had handed me a formal notice stating my visitor access was suspended pending a financial audit of Ronan's care funds. Declan thought shutting me out of the castle would stop me from attending probate.

He was wrong.

I didn't argue with the guard. I didn't cause a scene at the gates. I drove straight to the Gallagher & Associates law firm in downtown Belfast.

"Thirty minutes until probate begins," Siobhan said. She glanced at the brass wall clock in her corner office.

I emptied my tote bag onto her glass desk. The fourteen blue nursing journals landed with a heavy thud. The eighty-four authorization forms followed. Finally, I placed the digital marriage verification receipt on top.

"Declan locked me out of the estate," I told the lawyer. "He claims I manipulated Ronan's accounts. He expects me to miss the reading."

Siobhan flipped open the first blue log. She ran a finger down the meticulous columns of medication dosages and grocery receipts.

"This is a flawless ledger," Siobhan noted. "But Declan's lawyers will argue you forged these after the fact. They will claim you used undue influence on a dying man."

I held up my left hand. "Then let them argue with this."

I pulled the plain gold band from my ring finger and set it on the glass.

Siobhan picked it up. She pulled a jeweler's loupe from her desk drawer and inspected the inner curve of the metal.

"M and D, 14 June," Siobhan read aloud.

"Engraved twelve years ago," I said. "Paid for by a joint account that Ronan himself set up for us as a wedding gift. Check the banking history from June 14th. The jeweler's receipt is in the estate archives."

Siobhan lowered the loupe. She set the ring back into my palm.

"Ronan knew Declan would try to bury you," Siobhan murmured.

She turned her chair toward the heavy steel safe built into the wall behind her desk. She spun the dial, entered a code, and pulled the heavy door open.

She reached inside and withdrew a thick, green-bound document sealed with red wax.

"What is that?" I asked.

"The appendix," Siobhan answered. She rested her hand flat over the green leather. "Ronan gave this to me three years ago. He gave me strict orders to read it only if his primary will was contested, or if the family attempted to exclude you."

Before I could ask another question, the heavy frosted glass door to the office swung open.

Declan marched in. Finn followed close behind, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. Isobel trailed them, her black mourning dress rustling against the doorframe.

"What is she doing in here?" Declan demanded. He pointed a rigid finger at me.

"Ms. Callahan is consulting with me before the reading," Siobhan replied. Her tone remained perfectly even.

"She is not family," Isobel stated, crossing her arms. "The interim committee revoked her access to the estate. She has no right to be present for a private probate of the late Duke."

"She is a disgruntled former employee under active investigation for financial misconduct," Declan added. He stepped up to the glass desk, glaring down at Siobhan. "Remove her from this office immediately, or I will have the Law Society review your conduct."

Finn refused to look at me. He stared at the floor, his jaw clamped tight.

"Finn," I called out. "Are you really going to let them do this?"

"You stole from Grandfather," Finn muttered to the carpet. "You don't belong here."

The sting of his words hit hard, but I refused to let them see me bleed. I slipped the gold band back onto my finger.

"I spent thirteen years raising you," I said to Finn. "I fed you. I held you when you were sick. And you throw it all away for a woman who sold you for six hundred thousand pounds."

Isobel stepped forward, her eyes flashing. "Watch your mouth, Maeve. You are speaking to the future Duchess."

"I am speaking to a fraud," I shot back.

Declan slammed his palm against the glass desk. The blue journals rattled. "Security!"

"Lower your voice, Declan," Siobhan commanded. She didn't flinch. She kept her hand firmly planted on the green-bound appendix.

"I am the Duke of Blackwater," Declan snarled. "I dictate who sits in on my father's final affairs. I want this woman out of the building. Now."

"You do not dictate the law," I fired back, stepping up to match his position at the desk. "And you do not dictate my marriage."

Isobel laughed, a sharp, dismissive sound. "Still clinging to that paperwork? You are embarrassing yourself, Maeve. The trust committee already sided with us."

Siobhan glanced up at the brass wall clock. The minute hand clicked forward.

"We have exactly thirty minutes until the official reading begins," Siobhan said. She picked up a silver letter opener and slid it under the red wax seal of the green-bound document.

The wax cracked with a sharp snap.

Declan’s eyes darted to the green leather. "What is that? I demand to see it."

"This is an addendum drafted directly by your father," Siobhan explained. She opened the cover, revealing thick parchment covered in Ronan's sharp handwriting.

"An addendum regarding what?" Finn asked, finally looking up from the floor.

Siobhan met Declan's furious gaze.

"If you insist she is not family, Declan," Siobhan said with deadly calm, "I will first read aloud exactly whom Ronan recognized as the lawful wife of his heir."
