Chapter 5

CHARLOTTE'S POV:-

After the first day at the University, I finally realized that I had forgotten to ask my husband to give me money for the Uber. And I also forgot to tell my husband about my university. But I knew my brother must have remembered what was happening. I waited for thirty minutes, hoping my brother would send his car because he never let me take a bus and I hardly took Uber.

The campus was empty and I sighed in defeat. There was no one coming to pick me up. I stood up from the bench I was on. Thanks to Maggie, I knew which bus would drop me off near Benjamin's mansion. Maggie told me about the numbers of buses and their routes. Back then, I never thought it would come in handy one day.

I looked at my phone again and cursed at myself. I was the one who forgot to plug in the charger in the socket. And now my phone is dead. I couldn't contact anyone as well. Otherwise, I would have called my brother and asked him to come and pick me up. I started walking toward the bus station.

Suddenly, I started to have this uneasy feeling inside of me. As if someone was watching me from behind. In a situation like this, turning to look could be a bad idea since you could lose your pace or your balance. I remained calm and pulled my compact out. Through the mirror, I looked behind me but carefully.

I saw a creepy looking man following me. He looked almost the same age as Benjamin. Rolling my eyes in annoyance, I continued walking towards the bus station. I placed the compact in the bag and my hand went straight for the perfumed mist I had in my bag. A girl's bag is full of deadly weapons. If a girl is carrying makeup in her bag, she has everything she needs to protect herself. Though, she needs to train her mind not to freeze in moments like this.

I was grateful to Rene who didn't let my brother pull me out of the karate classes. My mother wanted me to be strong and independent. That's why she got me admitted to a karate school when I was only 4. The creep got closer to me and grabbed my free hand. I snatched my hand from his grasp and with my other hand, I pulled my mist bottle out and sprayed it on his eyes.

"Ugh! My eyes! You stupid bitch!" He growled at me and tried to grab my hand. But I punched him in the face. I tried to punch him again but this time, he held onto my wrist.

"Playing hard to get, huh? I like that. I heard you like big dicks. How about I give you a look of mine." He growled at me angrily. I pulled my wrist from his grasp. But he pushed me on the ground. With that, he stood in front of me, trying to unzip his pants. Before he could bring his fly down, he was slapped hard on his face.

"You dare touch my woman!" A known growl rang in my ears and turned around. A relieved smile appeared on my face as I saw Benjamin standing behind me. He extended one of his hands toward me. I quickly took his hand and he pulled me up on my feet.

"Mr LeBlanc! I had no idea she was involved with you. Or I would never have approached her in the first place. I didn't know she was your bitch." The creep started begging Benjamin but that was the least of my concerns. My ears stood when he called me names.

"What did you just say?" I asked him, glaring at him.

"Why didn't you tell me you are Mr Leblanc's bitch?" Instead of answering my question, he called me those words again. Anger rushed through my veins and I saw red. I took a step closer to him and kicked him hard where the sun didn't shine.

Clutching onto his crotch, he was groaning in pain. "Now you will forever remember to respect women other than your mother. You filthy animal. Did you really think I would like to be seen anywhere near you? You are nothing but a disgrace to your mother." I growled at him angrily then I spat on his face.

"Let's just go, honey. Filthy things like him can spread their germs everywhere." With that, I grabbed Benjamin's hand and pulled him away from that creep. I could see his car parked at the corner of the alley. We walked toward his car. He unlocked the car for me and I hopped in quickly.

That's when I realized how terrified I was after the whole scene. My hands were shaking and my heart was pounding against my chest. Easier said than down, I realized how wrong I was. No matter how much you prepare your mind for incidents like that, your body just freezes when the time comes.

Benjamin touched my shoulder and I almost jumped. "Are you alright?" He asked me in a concerned tone. But my ego became a wall between me and him back then.

"Yeah! What the freak would happen to me. I am fine." I replied to him proudly. I was taking deep breaths to calm myself down.

"Why didn't you tell me about your university?" He asked me and I had to pinch my thigh so I wouldn't end up slapping him hard on his face.

"Are you kidding me? Last night, you called me a slut and this morning, you left before I woke up. When was I supposed to tell you, in your dreams or something? I don't have magical powers." I yelled at him angrily. I wrapped my arms above my chest and turned my face toward the window. I was just so angry at everyone, I didn't want to talk to anyone at that moment.

Thankfully, he didn't ask me anything after that. He just started the car and started driving. He pulled in front of the mansion. I tried to open the door but the door was locked. I turned to glare at him. He was shamelessly smirking at me. "Open the car." I growled at him angrily.

"Nope! Talk to me first." The smirk on his face was bothering me so much. I wanted to claw his smirk so he would never be able to smirk at me again.

"I said, open the door. I don't want to talk to someone as selfish, idiotic and disgusting as you." I growled at him angrily. The smirk was wiped off of his face and an angry growl echoed in the silence of the car.

"You call me that again and I will kiss you until you pass out." He growled at me angrily. He tried to grab my hand but I fooled him. I unlocked the car and hopped out.

"You disgust me. I will not be talking to you ever." Howling at him, I walked into the mansion. I came face to face with my mother in law. The shocked look on her face made me frown in confusion.

"And what are you looking at? Haven't you seen me before?" I growled at her and walked away. Her eyes remained on me as I climbed up the staircase and vanished into my bedroom.

"My bedroom, or his?" I thought in confusion, placing everything back into its place. "Eh! He married me. Now everything that he owns belongs to me as well." I spoke out loud for my inner self to hear those words loud and clear. I grabbed a pair of casual clothes and walked into the bathroom. I just wanted to soak myself in nice warm water.

---------------

"I just can't understand this man at all. He wanted me to tell him about my university. But my question is, when could I possibly tell him about that. He didn't even stay to apologize to me." I was sitting at the church, talking to father John. I just wanted to tell him everything that was starting to become a heavyweight on my chest.

Did you try telling him that?" He asked and I shrugged my shoulders.

"I told him that I couldn't tell him if he was not around to listen." I replied to father John in a low tone.

"Not that, sweet child! I am asking about the apology you expect from him. Did you tell him that his words have deeply hurt you and you expect him to apologize for his harsh words?" Father John elaborated his question and I frowned.

"I mean I told him that he disgusted me. And that he had hurt me. He should understand that he owes me an apology." I replied to father John naively. Father John chuckled and began shaking his head.

"It looks to me that you have also been a very bad wife to him." Father John told me and I pouted angrily.

"That's because he is not a good husband at all. He called me bad names. He asked me how many times I had slept with Arnold. Couldn't he see it from my face, that I was a pure woman." I tried to defend myself but deep inside, I knew I was doing the wrong thing.

"No, Sweet Child! You need to be good so the others will be good with you as well. A woman is made of endurance and love. Men are not that strong. If you want to be treated like a queen, you should start treating your man like a king." Father John tried to explain it to me and I narrowed my head.

"You said it yourself, he didn't try anything. That means he respects your boundaries. It's a good sign." Father John added and I frowned.

"What am I supposed to do? He opens his mouth and I get angry." I was clenching my fists hard as I told Father John how I felt.

"Did you marry him on your own free will or were you forced?" Father John asked me and I sighed.

"I made that decision on my own." I replied honestly. My brother only asked me if I could do it. I was never forced.

"Then you should respect your decision. You should try being nice to your husband if you want him to be nice to you as well." Father John told me and I sighed.

I nodded my head, I knew father John was just trying to help me. That's why I came to him. "How about you go back home and cook something for him. Not breakfast, but lunch. Make him lunch so when he eats it at work, he will remember you." Father John added in a low tone and I nodded my head.

Back at home, we were all sitting on the dining table. Mrs LeBlanc was shooting daggers at me but I didn't care at all. "I am leaving. I have to take care of something before I get to University. That's why Joe will be dropping you today. You can come back with me." Benjamin informed me as he stood up and walked away. I turned my gaze toward my plate and that's when I remembered his lunch.

I went to the kitchen then ran after Benjamin. "Benjamin, wait!" I called him from behind and he turned around to look at me. I held the box in front of his eyes and he raised a brow at me.

"What's that?" He asked me as he took one of the boxes from my hands.

"I was making lunch for myself. I made a little more so you can also have home cooked lunch." I replied to him, trying to sound flat if not sweet. Father John forbade me from talking bitterly with him.

"Did you poison it or something? Why are you being nice to me all of the sudden?" He asked me bitterly and shattered my heart again.

I sat alone at my long marble dining table, staring at a plate of cold truffle risotto. My husband, Jere, was late again, claiming he was stuck in a "war zone" of a board meeting for a multi-billion dollar merger. A single Instagram notification shattered the silence. It was a photo of a candlelit birthday dinner, featuring a man's hand resting on a white tablecloth. I recognized the slight veins, the jagged scar on the thumb, and the navy-faced Patek Philippe watch I had spent six months tracking down as a wedding gift. Jere wasn't in a boardroom; he was celebrating his ex-girlfriend Irina's birthday while texting me to "don't wait up." The next morning, I followed him to a VIP hospital wing. I watched through a cracked door as my husband cuddled a five-year-old boy and whispered tender promises to Irina. When he came home, he tried to buy my silence with a rare pink diamond bracelet, but I found the receipt: he had bought two identical ones. He had branded his wife and his mistress with matching jewelry, using hidden trackers to keep us both on a leash. When I confronted him, he didn't flinch. He coldly reminded me that he owned my father's massive debts and could send him to prison for insolvency fraud with one phone call. "Stop with the attitude, Deliah," he said. I felt like a ghost haunting my own life, trapped in a gilded cage by the man who paid for my mother's heart surgery while keeping a secret family across town. The humiliation peaked at our rescheduled anniversary dinner when Jere received a text, threw a stack of hundreds at me like I was a stranger, and abandoned me in a crowded restaurant to rush back to her. "Pay the bill," he commanded before walking out. Standing in the wreckage of a shattered crystal vase back at the penthouse, I realized my silence was the only thing keeping his empire standing. I pulled the crumpled divorce papers from my purse and signed my name with a steady hand. I wasn't just walking away; I was calling his sister to help me burn his perfect world to the ground.

The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead as I stared at the proposal on my computer screen, my eyes burning from hours of proofreading. The Sterling Tech subsidiary office had emptied hours ago, leaving me alone with the gentle hum of the air conditioning and the occasional ping from the security guard's desk downstairs. I glanced at my watch—11:43 PM. Michael should have been done with the corporate gala by now. He'd promised to call when it ended at ten, but my phone remained silent, its screen dark and accusatory on my desk. "Just one more page," I whispered to myself, massaging my temples. I'd been doing this for seven years—polishing Michael's presentations, fixing grammatical errors in his proposals, making sure every comma was in place so he could shine in front of the board. Tonight was no different, except for the heaviness in my chest that had been growing over the past few months. I saved the document and sent it to Michael's email, adding a simple note: *All done. Hope the gala went well.* No kiss emoji, no terms of endearment.
