Chapter 4

Mom tried to snatch Cecily away from me, so I immediately lunged at her like a madwoman.

She stumbled backward in shock. "What are you doing?"

She became enraged when she saw me clutching Cecily tightly in my arms. "You're both worthless! You're just a bigger piece of trash holding onto a smaller one! Why don't the both of you just die already?"

Still furious, she stepped forward and delivered a violent kick to my stomach.

It was excruciating.

It hurt so much that I could barely breathe. I felt warm liquid trickling down my thighs, and soon, intense pain erupted from my abdomen. "Mom, call 911."

My voice became so weak that it was almost inaudible. "It hurts, Mom. Please, help me."

Diana glared at me before turning back to Mom, her voice trembling. "My hand's bruised from Laura hitting me! I need to go to the hospital!"

Mom and Jorge dared not delay. They treated Diana's injury like an emergency and rushed her to the hospital.

Cecily started wailing even louder in my arms. I gently placed her beside me and used the last of my strength to rummage through my bag for my phone. "Hello, 911? Please save me. I'm having a miscarriage."

When I opened my eyes again, I found myself in a white hospital room.

I immediately shot up on the bed, only to be forced back down by the immense pain in my body. "Doctor! What happened to me, doctor? My child!"

The doctor was visibly drained as he slowly replied, "I'm sorry. You had already suffered massive blood loss by the time you were brought in. The baby didn't make it."

My heart clenched tightly. I had carried my second child with me for months. It was as if it was already a part of me.

Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably as I struggled to sit up on the bed, my hands waving weakly. "Where's Cecily? Where's my daughter?"

A familiar voice came from outside the door. "Huh."

Mom walked into the room, appearing disdainful, as she remarked, "So you're still worried about that little brat even now? I guess you really are her mother, huh?"

My body began to tremble, and I lunged at her as I shouted, "Where's Cecily? Where is she?"

A loud slap echoed across the room, and a sharp pain seared across my face.

Having just undergone a miscarriage, the slap had almost sent me crashing to the ground.

The doctor quickly stepped in front of me. "What do you think you're doing?"

Mom waved her fists angrily and shouted, "Fortunately, Diana is fine! Otherwise, I'd have you and your baby buried with her!"

It turned out that Mom did not know that I had already lost the baby.

Jorge suddenly appeared out of nowhere, looking torn as he stood between me and Mom.

He eventually approached me and said, "You were in the wrong this time, Laura. But at least Diana is fine now. Just apologize to her, okay?"

So in the end, I still had to apologize to her.

I laughed out loud in my mind. The tiny scratch on Diana's hand had probably already healed before she even got to a hospital.

When I finally saw Cecily peeking out from behind Jorge, my mind calmed down again. I immediately grabbed her and bolted toward the door, completely ignoring the searing pain throughout my entire body.

Mom screamed furiously from behind me. "You vixen! If you dare step out of that door, I swear that I'll cut ties with you!"

I felt that a weight had finally been lifted off my chest.

Now that the child in my belly was gone, I had nothing left that would hold me back.

My mother, my husband, and my sister—they could all go to hell for all I care.

Severing ties would be precisely what I wanted.

Not far from the hospital's entrance was Angela Glover with her head poking out of a car window. "Laura! Over here!"

Angela opened the rear car door and helped me place Cecily inside.

She then asked, "Are you sure you're okay, Laura? You shouldn't be moving around so much after a miscarriage."

My hands paused mid-air.

It was just a simple expression of concern, yet it only made me wonder how long it had been since I was asked such a question.

Angela had been my neighbor since we were children. Her father was a drunkard who abused her frequently.

Every time her father got wasted on alcohol, she would run to my house seeking refuge.

Mom and Diana despised her, so I had to sneak her into my room and hide her in my closet.

Over time, we became close friends and remained so ever since.

"Laura, do they know about your miscarriage?" Angela asked.

I shook my head weakly and replied, "They don't. That's also why I need your help with something."

I reached into my bag and pulled out my divorce papers.

I had repeatedly convinced myself that even though I never married Henry, I still had him by my side. I believed that he loved me.

But reality would only slap me in the face again and again. Jorge had always loved Diana, and marrying me was just a way for him to get closer to her!

I once believed that enduring everything now would eventually lead to a happy ending.

But in the end, all I ever got in return was a mother that played favorites, a husband that betrayed me, and a twin sister who took everything for granted.

I was exhausted. It was time to end this.

I handed the divorce papers to Angela and said, "Give these to Jorge for me."

Angela was stunned. "Laura."

I smiled and replied, "This time, I have to win."
