Chapter 3

I hated Julian, but I knew he was under no obligation to save me. I had no right to blame him.

But I couldn't help it. He was my fiancé. We were about to announce our engagement. He could have given me three seconds to speak instead of cutting me off with a clipped, "I'm busy." Or called back when he realized I never came home. I had never stayed out all night. He had to know something was wrong.

He knew exactly where I was; I'd told him I was on my way to pick up a custom-cut gemstone.

The shredded paper scattered across the floor was a monument to my own foolishness. My persistence was a joke.

When I was young, I insisted on studying jewelry design. No one took me seriously, so I carved out a path for myself, eventually making a small name.

But fate had played a cruel joke. Everything I'd built was temporary, and now it was all gone.

I tossed my design tools into the trash and stuffed the few remaining drawings into a portfolio, planning to discard them the next day.

That night, a well-connected friend sent me a message. Julian had hinted at an engagement at the party.

He probably didn't know about my hand yet.

What future did I have if I couldn't hold a carving knife?

He had celebrated his victory and announced his engagement, but he hadn't named his bride. Everyone was congratulating him, but all eyes were on Genevieve Lancaster, who stood glowing by his side. They looked like a perfect power couple.

And I sat in my little studio, surrounded by the paper ruins of my own folly.

The next day, news of the impending union between the Valerius and Lancaster families was the talk of the city.

"Valerius Heir to Marry Genevieve Lancaster, Uniting East Coast Powerhouses."

Every comment below the headline was congratulatory.

That afternoon, Julian came to my studio. It was the first time he had ever set foot in it.

Just as well. We needed to set things straight.

I opened the door. When he saw the mess inside, he froze. "What happened to all your work?"

"I can't design anymore."

"What? Are you kidding me? What happened? Why did you block me?" He stared at me, his displeasure obvious, scolding me as if I were a misbehaving pet. "Stop fooling around, Ava. Our engagement ceremony is next month."

"I know I've neglected you lately, but you need to be more mature. Pull yourself together and come home with me."

He acted like this was all just another one of my little dramas.

I laughed, and tears immediately welled in my eyes. "Home? What home? The one you share with Genevieve Lancaster? The news of your engagement is plastered everywhere. Why would I go there?"

He frowned, his eyes turning cold and distant. "I announced our engagement last night. It was supposed to be a surprise for you. You weren't feeling well, you left early… so of course people misunderstood. I admit I handled it badly, but I'm fixing it. This has nothing to do with Genevieve. She's a victim here too."

Abandoned Ex-Wife: Now Untouchable Novel Cover

My five-year-old daughter was dying in the ICU, her heartbeat replaced by the continuous, electronic scream of a flatline. I gripped her cold hand, my throat sealed shut by a terror so absolute I couldn't even cry out. I dialed my husband Grayson's private number, the one reserved only for me and his assistants. He declined the call instantly. A second later, a text buzzed against my palm: "In a meeting. Do not disturb. Stop calling." Five miles away, Grayson was at a luxury gala, adjusting his silk tie and laughing with Belle Escobar. He told her I was just being "dramatic" and using our daughter's "fever" as an excuse to avoid the event. He had no idea Effie's heart had already stopped. When I finally reached our penthouse, soaked from the rain and carrying Effie's small socks in a plastic bag, Grayson didn't even look at me. He snapped at me for ruining the hardwood floors and asked if I'd left Effie with the nanny just to "feel sorry for myself." Three days later, while I buried our daughter in a small, lonely ceremony, Grayson was at the Hamptons. Belle posted a photo of him golfing with the caption: "A mental health day with the boys." He didn't even attend the funeral, but he returned home demanding I clear out Effie's room to make a study for Belle's son. The injustice burned through me until there was nothing left. I swallowed a handful of sleeping pills, desperate to join my daughter. But instead of the darkness, I woke up to blinding lights and the scent of Grayson's expensive cologne. I was standing in a ballroom, wearing a blue silk dress I had already burned. Above me, a banner read: "Happy 5th Birthday Kaiden & Effie." I was back, exactly one year before the tragedy. This time, I wasn't going to be the grieving wife. I was going to be their worst nightmare.

STUCK WITH MR. BILLIONAIRE FOR CHRISTMAS Novel Cover

I despised Dante Moretti long before he slid that ring onto my finger. Arrogant. Controlling. The kind of boss who could ruin my day with a single clipped order. I hated the way he spoke to me. I hated the way he watched me more. But walking into my hometown with his ring and watching my ex-husband's face drain of color felt wickedly perfect. The elders wanted to see real love before selling their land. So Dante and I lied. We played the sweet couple. Except Dante didn't touch me like a man pretending. At the Christmas market, his hand slid down my spine and stopped right where it shouldn't. At dinner, he whispered against my ear, "If he's watching, spread your legs a little. Let him see who owns you now." I should have slapped him. Instead, my body answered him before I could breathe. He kissed my temple too slow and held my waist too tight. When the lights dimmed, he murmured, "Open for me." "Keep your eyes on me." "I want you shaking for me, not for him." Somewhere between hating him and wanting him to wreck me, everything blurred. Because the man who barked orders in boardrooms had me whispering his name in the dark, Christmas lights flickering over his bare shoulders while he swallowed every sound I made. My ex wanted me broken. Dante wanted me ruined, but only beneath him. And the worst part was how easily I let him. Santa didn't bring me a miracle. He gave me a sin in a three piece suit and I tore the wrapping off with trembling hands.
