Chapter 1

A violent snowstorm tears its way across the mostly coniferous, heavily forested landscape, generating what may be described as a "white out." The relentless barrage of snow and sleet that has descended upon the area has reduced visibility to almost nothing, and a violent, howling, deafening wind has whipped up, practically silencing everything else. Being a werewolf has some advantages, however; she has heightened senses and strong, natural tracking instincts. These qualities make venturing out during a storm not impossible, but certainly challenging. In any case, she doesn't have much of a say in the issue.

Gamma Darius's third-ranked daughter, twelve-year-old Amanda Tyler, is on patrol in the woods with her pack, the Moonbeams. As a Gamma, it seems sense that Amanda would want to attend the Defensive Security Detail's pre-training sessions, which function similarly to a military academies program. She-wolves in the Defensive Security Detail are uncommon; those who apply are subjected to intense scrutiny and must pass a battery of difficult tests and barriers before even being considered for the training program. The bottom line is that she-wolves have to earn the right to train as official members of the Defensive Security Detail before they can even try. Amanda still has to overcome the hardships imposed on her by her trainers despite the fact that her father is the pack's Chief of Security. As a result, Amanda is, in her words, "forced to" endure this suckass assignment and do as she says.

As the blizzard continues to rage, Amanda painstakingly makes her way through nearly three feet of snow that has already fallen, slogging her way through a wooded clump of trees until emerging from a stand... Upon across a little clearing with a rundown cabin sitting in the middle. Already, the blustery weather has chafed and rawed her nostrils... Amanda's nose is always running and ice crystals are accumulating around her nostrils, but she detects the faint scent of another wolf. Then, Amanda hears the faint, barely discernible, what sounds like the crying of a tiny kid coming from the dilapidated building, despite the roaring wind reverberating in her ear canals.

When she gets closer, her heightened senses kick in and the smell and the cries grow more pronounced. And once inside, Amanda sees a dark creature hunched in a corner, shivering constantly. When she sees the four-year-old she-wolf shivering in the cold, she runs over and kneels down next to her. Apparently deserted... since there were no traces of other inhabitants... The child's appearance is unsanitary; he or she is dressed in many layers of soiled, smelly garments that are in poor repair. She seems uninterested in life and, judging by the hollowness of her face, is dangerously close to death from malnutrition.

Amanda carefully carries the weak child home, abandoning the rest of the patrol in favor of the child and her own family. which, given the special circumstances, she felt quite justified in carrying out. Amanda had to beg and plead with her parents for three days before they agreed to take in and adopt the homeless teen she had found and named Snow after the snowy day she was found. It was never said of Amanda that she was particularly innovative or imaginative.

After 14 years, the renegade wolves have organized into tiny cells around the country and are more violent against the werewolf packs. These wolves strongly disapprove of the name "pack" and the werewolf caste system as a whole. Because of this, many packs are electing to establish alliances with one another, particularly those that are less in size or strength than some of the bigger ones. One method they do this is via marriages set up by the Alphas with she-wolves from other packs with better social standing. Snow was "bestowed with this privilege" only lately.

It's expected that once Snow weds an Alpha wolf 10 years her older, the Moonbeam and Lightning Bolt packs will be allied within the next week. He has a notorious reputation for being a 'womanizing' jerk who is also cocky, rude, and aggressive. But given the small size of the Moonbeam Pack... This partnership is seen as essential, since the Alpha is known to be a little power-hungry himself. This is for the best of the pack. Consequently, the Lightning Bolt Pack Alpha's flaws are easily forgiven. Everybody wins in this marriage, except for Snow, of course. She, however, is unable to change the situation.

Both the Alpha and Beta of the Lightning Bolt Pack had turned down marriage proposals to the Alpha despite his infamously bad reputation. the social hierarchy, they are given the option to decline. Therefore, the only eligible wolves were the Gamma Darius wolf daughters, who ranked third. Amanda is one of the strongest members of the pack, male and female alike, and as such, she is required to remain inside the pack to guard it, despite the fact that she is the oldest and would thus be the obvious choice for such an arrangement. And Snow? Well, Snow is just a poor, orphaned rogue discovered when he was a kid, and the Gamma family took him in after Amanda begged them to. Amanda has always been a "outsider" to the rest of the pack. She would be ideal for the position, and joining forces with another pack would benefit both of them.
