Chapter 6

Mira

Five candles. I'd pressed them into the frosting myself — mismatched colors because the corner store only had what it had. Two blue, two white, one red. They burned steady in the still air of the kitchen, throwing small halos of light across the table.

The cake was lopsided. Vanilla, from a box mix, with chocolate frosting I'd spread too thick on one side to hide where the layers hadn't lined up. I'd written CAYDEN in yellow icing across the top. The D leaned into the E like it was tired.

It was perfect.

Cayden sat across from me with his chin on his fists, watching the flames. The wooden wolf stood guard beside his plate.

"When's he coming?" he asked.

"Soon."

I checked my phone under the table. Three messages. All delivered. All read. No reply.

7:14 PM — *Cayden's cake is ready. He's waiting for you.*

7:31 PM — *Caleb, please. He's been sitting here for an hour.*

7:52 PM — *It's his birthday.*

Blue checkmarks. Nothing else.

The wax dripped. A bead of blue rolled down the side of the first candle and pooled in the frosting.

I called him.

It rang four times. Five. Then the click of connection, and I heard it — background noise. Glasses clinking. Music. Laughter that floated and curled like ribbon.

"Caleb."

Silence on his end. But he was there. I could hear him breathing.

"Today is Cayden's birthday. You said you'd come back."

One second. Two. Three. Four. Five.

The line went dead.

I stared at the screen. *Call ended.* Twelve seconds total. Five of them silence, and then he'd hung up on his son's birthday like closing a tab he'd meant to close hours ago.

Cayden hadn't moved. His eyes were still on the candles, but the light in them had changed — dimmer, older, the look of someone doing math they didn't want to finish.

"Mama, it's okay." He sat up straight. Squared his small shoulders. "Caleb — Uncle Caleb is busy. We can do it just us two."

Uncle Caleb.

The words came out of his mouth smooth and practiced, like he'd been rehearsing them in his head since the morning at the main house. No stumble. No correction. He'd already made the cut.

My throat burned. I reached across the table and covered his hand with mine.

"Make a wish, baby."

He closed his eyes. His lips moved without sound. Then he leaned forward and blew, and all five flames bent sideways and died at once, trailing five thin threads of smoke toward the ceiling.

I was reaching for the knife when my phone buzzed.

One message. Caleb.

*Come to the main house. His gift is here.*

Cayden was already reading over my arm. His whole body jolted like he'd touched a live wire.

"Mama, he remembered!" His fingers locked around my wrist. "He remembered! Let's go, come on, let's go right now!"

His face had cracked wide open — hope pouring through like water through a broken dam, unstoppable, reckless, the kind of hope that would cost him everything when it hit the ground.

I should have said no.

I didn't.

The main house blazed. Every window on the ground floor poured golden light onto the gravel drive, and the front doors stood open wide enough to frame what waited inside.

Roses. Hundreds of them. Red and white, climbing the banisters, spilling from crystal vases on every surface, petals scattered across the marble floor like something had bloomed and burst. A champagne tower caught the chandelier light and threw it back in fractured sparks. Waitstaff in black moved between clusters of guests — women in gowns, men in dark suits, the whole gleaming machinery of Ironclaw high society turning at full speed.

Cayden's hand went slack in mine.

This wasn't a birthday party.

At the far end of the hall, Caleb stood at the head of a long table draped in white linen. Black suit. Silver cufflinks. His hair pushed back, his jaw freshly shaved. Selene hung on his arm in a gown the color of champagne foam, one hand resting on her stomach, the other curled around his bicep.

An engagement celebration. Or a Luna announcement. Or whatever name they'd given the night they chose to replace us.

Cayden didn't see any of it. He saw his father.

He tore free of my hand and ran. Straight through the crowd, dodging legs and champagne flutes, his sneakers squeaking on the marble. He hit Caleb at full speed, arms wrapping around his waist, face buried in his stomach.

"Daddy!"

The word rang out across the hall. Conversations stopped. Heads turned. A waiter froze mid-pour.

Caleb looked down at the boy clinging to him. His face went through something — a flicker, fast and unreadable, like a door opening and slamming shut in the same breath.

Then his hands came up and pushed.

Not a shove. Worse. A peel. He unhooked Cayden's arms from his waist the way you'd remove something stuck to your clothes, and he stepped back, and Cayden's grip broke, and the boy stumbled backward and sat down hard on the marble floor.

The sound his body made against the stone was small. A dull, soft thud. Nothing dramatic. The kind of sound that shouldn't be able to break a room in half, but did.

Cayden sat on the floor with his palms flat behind him and his legs splayed out and looked up at his father. He didn't cry. His mouth opened, then closed. His chin shook once and stopped.

I was already moving when Selene's hand connected with my face.

The slap came from the right. Open palm, full swing, the crack of it louder than it had any right to be. My head snapped sideways. My vision whited out for half a second, and when it came back, Selene was standing over me with her hand still raised.

"A mongrel's mother learns to lie too." Her voice carried. She meant it to. "Guards."

Hands seized my arms from behind. Two of them, thick-fingered, wrenching my shoulders back. My knees hit the marble. The cold shot up through my bones.

"Mama!"

Cayden scrambled to his feet. He didn't run to me. He ran to Caleb. His small body collided with Caleb's leg, and his arms wrapped around the man's shin, and his knees folded, and he knelt on the marble floor at his father's feet.

"Alpha Caleb Ironclaw."

The name came out whole. No crack. No waver. A five-year-old boy kneeling on stone, using the formal title he'd heard the elders use, the title that meant *you are above me and I accept it.*

"I was wrong. Please don't hurt my mama."

The hall went silent. Not quiet — silent. The kind of silence that has a taste, metallic and wrong, the silence of a hundred people watching a child beg and not one of them moving.

Caleb's body locked. Every muscle, every joint, frozen mid-breath. His eyes dropped to the boy at his feet, and something moved behind his face — deep, tectonic, the grinding of a thing he'd buried trying to claw its way up.

"Everyone step back." His voice came out hoarse. "Now."

The guards released my arms. I pitched forward, caught myself on my palms. Cayden was beside me in an instant, his hands on my elbow, pulling with everything his small frame had.

I stood.

The rose-tinted light from the chandeliers caught the back of my neck as I straightened. I felt it — the crescent mark warming, the silver surfacing beneath my skin like something rising from deep water. A faint shimmer, barely visible, gone in a breath.

But Caleb was facing me. And his eyes went wide.

His pupils contracted to points. His lips parted. He leaned forward, one hand half-raised, mouth forming the beginning of a word —

I didn't let him finish.

"Cayden." I took my son's hand. "We're leaving."

I turned toward the door. A hundred faces watched. A hundred mouths stayed shut.

I stopped at the threshold.

"This child's father," I said, my voice steady and clear enough to reach every corner of that glittering room, "is a true Alpha. Higher than anyone in this Pack."

I pulled Cayden through the doors. They swung shut behind us.

The night air hit my face. Cold, sharp, tasting of pine and frost. At the bottom of the steps, a black sedan idled with its headlights off. The rear door was already open. The license plate caught the porch light — three crescents stamped in silver before the numbers. Moonveil royal registry.

I lifted Cayden into the back seat. He didn't ask where we were going. He climbed in, pulled the wooden wolf from his pocket, and held it against his chest.

I slid in beside him and the door closed.

Behind us, the main house doors burst open. Caleb stood in the frame, his silhouette sharp against the golden light, one hand gripping the doorpost.

The car pulled away.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Patricia appear at his shoulder. Her hand flew to her mouth.

"That plate," she said, her voice carrying faintly through the cold air. "That's not possible."

The taillights of the Moonveil car bled red into the dark, and the Ironclaw main house shrank to a point of light, and then to nothing.

Cayden's head dropped against my arm. His breathing slowed. His fingers loosened around the wolf.

I pressed my lips to his hair and tasted salt.

Two days. I'd asked for two.

My mother had given me one.
