Chapter 1

"Isabella, you actually dared to come back?"

My father's voice cut across the VIP exit like a blade.

I stopped walking.

Three men stood in front of me, blocking the glass doors.

Richard Sterling, my father, gray at the temples now, still wearing the same navy suit he used to wear to board meetings. Ethan Sterling, my older brother, arms crossed, jaw set. And Julian Moore, the man who had once slid a diamond onto my finger and promised me forever.

Three familiar faces.

Once, they were my whole world.

Now they looked like strangers who had borrowed people I used to love.

"Hello, Father." My voice came out flat. "I didn't realize this was a welcome party."

"Don't." Richard's mouth thinned. "Don't you dare get smart with me."

Julian stepped forward. His tie was loose, and there were shadows under his eyes I didn't remember.

"Five years, Isabella." He spoke low, every word clipped. "You disappeared without a word. No call. No note. How long are you planning to keep up this little tantrum?"

Tantrum.

I almost smiled.

I didn't answer him. Instead, I glanced down at the small hand tucked inside mine.

Ava tugged at my sleeve, her dark curls bouncing, her pink backpack sliding off one shoulder.

"Mommy," she said, in that sweet, sleepy little voice, "when is Daddy coming? When are we going to the hotel?"

Silence.

All three men froze.

Julian's eyes dropped to her face. The color drained from his cheeks so fast it was almost funny.

"Who is she?" he asked.

"My daughter."

I said it the way you'd mention the weather.

Richard's brows slammed together. "Your daughter? So that's what you've been doing these past five years? Running off to have a baby?"

"Careful, Father." I tightened my grip on Ava's hand. "She can hear you."

Ethan hadn't said a word yet. He crouched slightly, studying Ava with an intensity that made my skin prickle. His gaze traced her nose, her chin, the shape of her eyes, like he was solving a puzzle.

"Ethan," I said sharply. "Stop staring at her."

He straightened, but his eyes stayed narrow. "How old is she, Bella?"

Nobody had called me Bella in five years.

"Old enough to know when grown-ups are being rude."

Ava peeked up at him from behind my leg. "Are you a bad man?"

Ethan blinked.

And for one strange second, my brother actually looked hurt.

Julian dragged a hand through his hair. "This is insane. You can't just show up with a kid and act like nothing happened. Do you have any idea what you put us through? Sophia cried for weeks after you left."

There it was.

Sophia.

Of course her name came out first.

I laughed. I couldn't help it. It slipped out, short and bright, and all three of them flinched like I'd slapped them.

"Sophia cried?" I tilted my head. "That's what you remember?"

"Isabella—"

"No, Julian. Let me remind you how it went."

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to.

"Five years ago, Sophia shoved me down the stairs at the charity gala. I had a sprained wrist and a cut lip. And when I came to the three of you, what did you say?"

Nobody answered.

I turned to my father. "You said she was fragile. That she'd lost her parents and needed more attention."

I turned to Ethan. "You said I should be the bigger person."

Then I faced Julian, and my chest tightened, just once, before I locked it down.

"And you said I was jealous. That a future Moore wife should be more understanding."

Julian's throat bobbed. "That's not... I didn't mean it like that."

"You meant it exactly like that."

Richard's face turned a dull red. "So you threw away your family over one argument? Over Sophia?"

"Not one argument, Father. Every argument. Every birthday she ruined. Every dinner where I sat at the end of the table while she sat next to you." I shrugged. "I just got tired of losing."

I remembered that night too clearly. The ring sliding off my finger. The cold of the marble counter when I set it down. Three faces staring at me, waiting for me to cry and apologize.

I hadn't done either.

I'd said only one thing.

"Since you've all chosen her, I'll make it easy for you."

Then I'd walked out.

They thought I was sulking. They thought I'd come crawling back in a week, maybe a month.

They had no idea that in five years, I'd built my own company from a one-room office. That I'd raised a daughter who laughed every single day. That I'd found a man none of them could ever afford to cross.

"Bella." Ethan's voice was quieter now. "Come home. We can talk about this."

"I have a home."

"With who?" Julian demanded. His hand shot out and caught my elbow. "Who's her father, Isabella? Tell me."

I stared at his fingers on my arm until he let go.

"That's none of your business anymore."

"It is my business! We were engaged!"

"Were," I repeated softly.

His jaw clenched so hard I could see the muscle jump.

Outside, beyond the sliding doors, a long black car rolled to the curb. Sleek. Silent. The kind of car that made people at the taxi line turn their heads.

Ava gasped.

She let go of my hand before I could stop her.

"Ava, wait—"

The driver hurried around, but the back door was already opening.

A tall man stepped out. Dark coat. Broad shoulders. A face carved from something cold and expensive. His eyes swept the terminal once, found me, and softened just slightly.

Damian.

Ava sprinted through the doors, her backpack thumping against her spine.

"Daddy!"

He bent down and caught her in one smooth sweep, lifting her high against his chest. She wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face in his collar, giggling.

"Hey, princess," he murmured. "Did you take care of Mommy on the plane?"

"I did! I shared my cookies!"

Behind me, nobody breathed.

I glanced over my shoulder.

Richard's mouth hung slightly open. Ethan had gone completely still.

And Julian...

Julian looked like the floor had dropped out from under him.

His face turned the color of ash. His hands curled into fists at his sides, then went slack. His eyes moved from Damian, to Ava, to me, and back again, over and over, like he couldn't make the picture fit.

Because he finally understood.

After I left, I was never alone.

Not for a single day.

Damian looked up over Ava's head. His gaze settled on the three men behind me, and something sharp and dangerous flickered across his expression.

Then he spoke, calm and quiet, but loud enough to carry.

"Isabella. Are these the people who made you cry five years ago?"
