Chapter 3

Evan led the way down the reinforced concrete stairwell to Sub-Level Four.

The air grew colder with every flight of stairs, smelling of damp cement, ozone, and old iron. When the heavy security door buzzed open, the layout made my jaw tighten.

It was the rebuilt version of the Silverclaw training pit from five years ago.

High-voltage wire lined the ceiling. The floor was rough, unsealed aggregate designed to give wolves traction during violent combat, and heavy iron bars partitioned the center of the subterranean vault. Even the observation booth stood in the exact same elevated position behind three-inch ballistic glass.

Evan stopped at the threshold of the staging area, his hand resting on the electronic lock console.

"Seven master handlers have gone through that door in the last forty-eight hours," Evan said, his voice carrying an edge of smug amusement. "Three of them have crushed ribs. One had his shoulder dislocated through his combat armor. They all had ten years more field experience than you."

He turned to look at me, his mouth curling into a sharp grin. "Still want to prove you're not afraid, Nora?"

I didn't blink. "Turn off the perimeter klaxon."

Evan frowned. "What?"

"The high-frequency tone on your alarm system," I said, pointing toward the pulsing red strobe mounted above the gate. "Humans can barely hear the harmonic frequency, but to an Alpha in neuro-overload, it sounds like an ice pick driving through his eardrum. Kill the siren, turn off the strobe, and order every guard behind the secondary yellow containment line."

"Those guards are the only thing keeping him inside that cell," Mira spoke up from the stairwell landing, crossing her arms. "If you take away their shock batons, you won't survive thirty seconds."

"If your guards stay within five yards of that gate, their heart rates will spike his aggression before I take two steps," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on Evan. "Kill the sirens and back up. Or I walk back up those stairs, let the gaming commission cancel your tournament, and leave you to explain the twenty-million-dollar loss to your pack council."

Evan's jaw ticked. He punched a code into the console.

The piercing mechanical whine died instantly. The red strobe lights clicked off, leaving only the dim, amber utility fixtures glowing along the concrete perimeter.

"Clear the floor," Evan muttered into his radio. "Everyone behind the blast doors."

The armored security team retreated quickly, sealing the reinforced glass doors of the observation booth behind them. Mira stepped inside beside Evan, both of them staring through the thick pane with arms crossed, as if waiting for the inevitable disaster.

I turned toward the central containment pit.

Cassian Black was pacing behind the heavy iron bars, his massive eight-foot frame locked in a violent, unstable semi-shift.

Dense black fur covered his broad back and shoulders. His hands were half-transformed into terrifying, razor-tipped claws, and the thick titanium cuffs around his wrists hung in shattered, twisted ribbons of metal. Deep gouges were carved into the concrete walls where he had repeatedly thrown his body against the enclosure.

His chest heaved in shallow, violent bursts. A low, continuous growl vibrated through the floorboards, shaking the dust from the overhead light fixtures.

I took a slow breath through my nose, reading the air.

The scent hit me immediately. Beneath the sharp metallic tang of fresh blood from his chafed wrists, there was a heavy, synthetic chemical stench. It was a potent, illegal cocktail of neural stimulants and adrenal boosters. His pack hadn't just pushed him into a fighting state; they had poisoned his nervous system until his instincts turned completely cannibalistic.

I reached for the zipper of my Northstar windbreaker.

Pulling off the padded jacket, I tossed it onto the concrete bench near the door, stripping down to my simple black long-sleeve shirt. I didn't want any synthetic fabric masking my scent, and I certainly didn't need the stiff armor hindering my posture.

Through the glass, I saw Evan shake his head in disbelief, leaning toward the intercom. "She's insane. She's taking off her gear."

I ignored him.

I unlocked the outer latch of the iron cage and stepped inside the perimeter corridor, leaving the barrier between us open by six inches.

The metallic click of the latch echoed against the concrete.

Cassian snapped his head in my direction.

His eyes were completely flooded with violent crimson, his pupils blown wide from sensory trauma. When he saw a human form standing inside his kill zone, a guttural, deafening roar tore from his throat.

He surged forward with horrifying speed.

His massive frame slammed against the reinforced bars, the impact ringing out like a cannon shot. Thick drool and flecks of blood sprayed through the metal gaps as his jaw snapped shut inches from my face.

Behind the observation window, Mira took a sudden step back, while Evan gripped the edge of the console, his knuckles turning white. From the way they watched me, it felt like they were waiting for me to scream, waiting for me to stumble backward, drop everything, and curl into a ball like the twenty-two-year-old girl they had humiliated in front of thousands.

I didn't move an inch.

I stood directly in front of the raging monster, my arms hanging loose at my sides, my chin level.

I relaxed my pulse, drawing in the cool air and releasing a steady, concentrated wave of my natural Omega pheromones. It was an ancient, unmistakable frequency—pure, grounding stability without a shred of hostility or fear.

The giant black wolf lunged again, his claws wrapping around the iron bars, ready to tear through the metal to rip my throat out.

Then his nostrils flared.

The crimson fury in his gaze flickered.

The deep, continuous snarl locked in his throat, stuttering into silence. Cassian tilted his heavy head, his flared nostrils drawing in the scent lingering in the narrow space between us.

His rigid, trembling muscles began to unlock. The wild, bloodshot crimson in his eyes receded, revealing the dark, intelligent amber beneath.

He didn't roar. He didn't claw the bars.

Slowly, almost hesitantly, the terrifying beast lowered his snout. He leaned forward, pressing his broad, furred forehead directly through the gap between the iron bars.

I raised my right hand, sliding my bare fingers through the steel grid.

I placed my palm flat against his forehead, feeling the burning heat radiating from his skin and the violent, racing rhythm of his skull.

Cassian let out a long, shuddering exhale.

His massive eyes drifted closed under my touch. The tension that had held him in agony for three days melted away under my bare hand. He leaned his heavy weight entirely against my palm, letting out a soft, exhausted whine that sounded almost like relief.

"Down," I murmured, my voice low, quiet, and absolute. "Rest now, Cassian."

The Alpha who had sent seven master handlers to the emergency room sank slowly to his knees.

He curled his massive black frame onto the cold concrete floor, resting his heavy chin flat across the tops of my boots, his breathing evening out into a deep, rhythmic slumber.

Total, suffocating silence fell over the subterranean floor.

Inside the observation room, the guards stood frozen in place.

Mira’s mouth was slightly open, her face drained of all color as she stared at the placid beast lying at my feet.

Beside her, Evan’s smug expression had completely disintegrated. He looked at Cassian, then looked at me, his hands trembling slightly against the counter.

"That's... that's impossible," Evan's voice crackled weakly over the intercom, his tone hollow and shaken. "It's just exhaustion finally taking effect. It has to be."

Before he could finish his sentence, the heavy blast doors at the end of the corridor hissed open.

A team of six specialized paramedics in crisp white-and-navy tactical uniforms marched onto the floor, pushing advanced mobile diagnostic units. They moved with military precision, completely ignoring the stunned Silverclaw guards standing against the walls.

The lead physician, Dr. Bennett, walked straight past Evan, not even giving the Arena Director a second glance.

He approached the containment gate, holding a digital tablet and a set of gold-embossed regulatory forms.

"Telemetry is stable across all twelve sectors, Director Hale," Dr. Bennett said in a clear, authoritative voice that echoed through the quiet hall. "The neuro-toxicity has dropped below baseline danger levels. We just need your signature on the provisional stabilization certification before tomorrow's championship opening."

I withdrew my hand from Cassian's head, took the stylus from Dr. Bennett, and signed my name across the official certification with a single stroke.

Then I handed the tablet back, turned around, and looked straight through the observation glass at Evan’s frozen, pale face.

"You were saying something upstairs," I said, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent room, "about offering me an entry-level job?"
