Chapter 1

We're celebrating my son, Baby Selwyn, turning a month old. I'm walking past the pool with him in my arms when someone shoves me from behind.

Colin Selwyn jumps into the pool like a madman. He saves us and immediately rushes us to the hospital. Baby Selwyn makes it out alive because of the timely rescue.

When I open my eyes again, Baby Selwyn and Colin aren't by my side. I sit up while coughing and remove the needle inserted into my hand. I leave the hospital room and head for the pediatric department, wanting to see Baby Selwyn.

However, as I walk past the emergency room, I hear Colin talking to a doctor.

"We managed to save the child from drowning, Mr. Selwyn. Why has he now died of asphyxiation?"

"I smothered him. Per the plan, he was never supposed to make it out alive!"

"But why? He's your son!"

"I promised Sandy that I would make our child the Selwyn family's sole heir. Lucille should never have given birth to Baby Selwyn."

Colin's tone is gentle and calm, yet his words are cold and cruel. I've always thought I had a loving marriage, but it's just a joke!

I've already lost my beloved son, and my heartless husband is the one behind his death. I don't want him anymore!

We threw a party to celebrate my son, Baby Selwyn, turning a month old. I was walking past the pool with him in my arms when someone shoved me from behind.

Colin Selwyn jumped into the pool like a madman. He saved us and immediately rushed us to the hospital. Baby Selwyn made it out alive because of the timely rescue.

When I opened my eyes again, Baby Selwyn and Colin weren't by my side. I sat up while coughing and removed the needle inserted into my hand. I left the hospital room and headed for the pediatric department, wanting to see Baby Selwyn.

However, as I walked past the emergency room, I heard Colin talking to a doctor.

The doctor's eyes widened in surprise.

He asked hesitantly, "You're going to swap Sandy's baby in as a stand-in? The two babies may have been born on the same day, but they look nothing alike. Won't Mrs. Selwyn notice?"

"Relax. Both babies have blue eyes, high noses, and dimples. They take after me. I'll bring over the new baby in a few days. Lucille won't suspect a thing. Just make sure you handle Baby Selwyn's body for me. And don't forget the sterilization meds I asked for. I'm giving them to Lucille."

The doctor sounded unsure. "Mr. Selwyn, this drug could hurt her uterus. She fell into the pool not long after giving birth, and that already put a strain on her womb. If she takes this, she may never be able to have kids again."

"That's not a concern. I promised Sandy I wouldn't have any more kids. No child could ever compete for love with ours."

"Mr. Selwyn, please think this through. If Mrs. Selwyn takes this, she may never be able to have kids again. It's too much!"

The doctor kept trying to talk Colin out of it, unwilling to hand over the medication.

"What are you talking about? I'm not going to treat her badly. Mrs. Selwyn's title is hers to keep. I'm taking care of her for the rest of her life. She already has a son. So what if she can't have kids anymore?

"Sandy's married now. All she left me was this kid. From now on, I'm going to live a good life with Lucille."

I stood barefoot on the cold floor, the chill creeping into my heart. So, Colin was offering me nothing but the empty title of Mrs. Selwyn. Was this really the kind of marriage I wanted?

Out of nowhere, Colin's phone rang. He put it on speaker, and a man's frantic voice filled the room.

"Mr. Selwyn, I already erased the surveillance footage from the villa. No one's going to find out I shoved Mrs. Selwyn into the pool, right?"

"Calm down. I made sure everyone was out of the way. No one saw anything. I've wired a million dollars to your account. Get out today and make sure Lucille never sees you again!"

Their voices and footsteps grew louder, so I stumbled back to my hospital room. Tears streamed down my face, soaking the crisp white sheets.

I never imagined Colin could do something so cruel just to make Sandy's child the only heir to the Selwyns!

When Colin and I got married, I knew he still had feelings for someone else—Sandy Wentworth, his childhood sweetheart. They never ended up together. She married someone else, and he married me.

I loved Colin enough to accept that Sandy would always have a special place in his heart. I gave him everything I had for three years, and I thought our relationship was getting stronger.

One day, he said, "Lue, let's have a baby!"

I broke down in tears, feeling like my love finally paid off. I honestly thought he started to love me back. But what I heard today completely crushed that fantasy.

Poor Baby Selwyn. He was so small and delicate when he was born; he only recently became all plump and rosy.

He used to smile at everyone. He just figured out how to roll over. He would stretch out his tiny arms, flashing that sweet, innocent grin.

Baby Selwyn loved being in my arms, and he also loved reaching for Colin. But that same person who would scoop him up and lift him high was the one who took his life. How could Colin ever live with that?
