Chapter 2

The digital clock on the living room wall read 1:45 AM when the front door lock clicked open.

Nathan stepped into the foyer, tossing his Italian leather briefcase onto the entry console. He pulled at his silk tie, his posture loose with the heavy, triumphant exhaustion of a man who believed he ruled the world. As he walked into the living room, the faint scent of Chloe’s signature French jasmine perfume swept through the air.

He stopped when he saw me sitting on the sofa in the dim light.

There was no flicker of guilt in his eyes. Instead, his brow furrowed in immediate irritation.

"Why are you still awake, Emma?" he asked, unbuttoning his collar. "I sent you a text hours ago telling you to go to sleep."

"I was waiting for you," I said evenly.

Nathan sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, shaking his head. "Look, I know you're sulking about your anniversary dinner, but you need to grow up. You don't have the slightest clue how the real world operates. This was a multi-million-dollar federal intellectual property trial. Landmark corporate litigation puts my firm on the national map. While you were sitting around being petty about a steak, I was securing the future of Drake Law."

"By standing on the courthouse steps with Chloe Mercer?" I asked.

"Chloe is my primary client," Nathan snapped, his tone condescending. "Her company is about to close a nine-figure venture round because of the defense I built for her. You sit in this penthouse all day living off my credit cards, completely oblivious to the kind of pressure I'm under. The least you could do is show some basic understanding instead of acting like an entitled child."

He walked over to his briefcase, unzipped the front pocket, and pulled out a thick legal packet. He tossed it onto the glass coffee table in front of me with a dull slap.

"What is this?" I asked.

"A non-disclosure and third-party indemnity filing," Nathan said, taking a seat on the armchair across from me. "To seal Chloe's ruling permanently, we need an independent supplier to formally assume the routing protocol audit. You still have administrative signing authority for that small logistics shell company your family set up years ago, right?"

"Apex Logistics," I said quietly.

It was a quiet holding entity Vance Capital used for routine offshore hardware distribution.

"Exactly," Nathan said dismissively. "Sign the blank liability waiver on the last page. Drake Law will submit it tomorrow morning to absorb the administrative penalties. It legally shifts the patent dispute away from Chloe’s core software so her valuation doesn't take a hit during her funding round."

I looked down at the document. "You want me to sign a fraudulent indemnity form so Chloe can steal a billion-dollar patent without consequence?"

Nathan scoffed, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "Stop using dramatic words you don't understand. It's standard corporate strategy. You're an unemployed housewife, Emma. You don't run a business. You don't go to an office. What does an administrative penalty on an inactive paper company matter to you?"

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a gold pen, and tapped it against the glass table.

"Sign it to help Chloe clear this final hurdle," Nathan said casually. "Do this without giving me a headache, and I'll add an extra five thousand dollars to your monthly allowance starting next week."

Before I could reply, the electronic keypad chimed.

The front door swung open, and Eleanor Drake walked into the penthouse, followed closely by Nathan’s younger sister, Kendra. Both of them carried luxury shopping bags from the boutique district downtown.

"Nathan, darling!" Eleanor beamed, completely ignoring me as she stepped into the living room. "The television networks are still replaying your press conference! You looked like a titan out there on those steps."

"Thanks, Mom," Nathan said, smiling for the first time all night.

Kendra dropped her bags onto the floor, her eyes sweeping over me with open disdain. "Still sitting on the couch doing nothing, Emma? Nathan is out making national headlines, and you look like you’re waiting for a funeral."

"She’s throwing a fit because I missed dinner," Nathan muttered.

Eleanor let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Of course she is. For three whole years, you’ve freeloaded in my son’s home, doing nothing except keeping up your useless appearances. A woman with no career, no family standing, and no ambition should be on her knees thanking God she has a husband who provides this kind of life."

Kendra walked over to the marble side table near the hall. Her eyes caught on the vintage gold and emerald filigree bracelet resting beside my keys—a piece my late mother had given me before she passed.

"Oh, wow," Kendra said, picking up the heavy heirloom without asking. "Look at the craft on this. This is real antique gold."

"Put that down, Kendra," I said, my voice dropping.

Kendra rolled her eyes and showed the bracelet to Eleanor. "Mom, look. Chloe has that major press gala tonight to celebrate the verdict. Her dress is emerald green. This bracelet would look stunning on her wrist. It’s the perfect good-luck gift to welcome her into our circle."

"You're right," Eleanor said, nodding in approval. "Chloe represents Nathan's future. Emma doesn't attend galas or mingle with high society anyway. Leaving high-end jewelry to collect dust in a drawer is an absolute waste. Give it to me, Kendra. I'll take it to Chloe's suite in the morning."

I stood up from the sofa. "That belongs to my mother. You will not touch it."

Nathan frowned, stepping directly between me and his mother. "Emma, stop making a scene over a piece of metal. It's just a bracelet. Chloe is representing Drake Law in front of the most influential venture capitalists in the country tonight. Don't let your petty jealousy embarrass my firm."

"Your firm?" I asked, looking Nathan directly in the eye.

"Yes, my firm," Nathan said coldly. "And everything you have belongs to the life I built for you. Show some respect to my family and let them have the bracelet."

I didn't argue.

I stepped past Nathan, reached out with swift precision, and snatched the gold bracelet straight out of Kendra's fingers before she could react.

"Hey!" Kendra shrieked.

I didn't flinch. I slammed the heavy bracelet down onto the center of the glass coffee table. The sharp impact rang through the room like a gunshot, cracking the surface beneath it.

Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest. "Are you insane?!"

I unzipped the front compartment of my leather tote bag. I pulled out a crisp, white legal folder and thrust it hard against Nathan's chest.

Nathan caught the papers by instinct.

He glanced down at the bold, centered header on the first page: *PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.*

The room went dead silent.

Nathan stared at the document, his jaw tightening as his eyes scanned my signature at the bottom. A second later, a sneer broke across his face. He let out a harsh, dry chuckle and tossed the papers back onto the table.

"A divorce?" Nathan shook his head, looking at me with pure contempt. "Are you out of your mind, Emma? Do you really think this little bluff is going to scare me?"

"It's not a bluff, Nathan," I said calmly. "Sign it."

"You don't have a single penny to your name," Nathan said, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a vicious taunt. "You walk out of this penthouse, and you won't even be able to pay next month's rent on a studio apartment. You think any other man is going to tolerate an arrogant, useless trophy wife who brings nothing to the table?"

"I don't need your money, Nathan," I said. "And as of tonight, you no longer have mine."

I reached into the foyer closet, grabbed my pre-packed carry-on suitcase, and slid the handle up.

Eleanor scoffed behind me. "Let her go, Nathan! Let's see how long she lasts on the street before she comes crawling back on her hands and knees!"

I didn't spare them a second glance.

I pulled open the penthouse door, stepped out into the hallway, and walked straight toward the private elevator without looking back.
