Chapter 2

The Maplecreek Rural Teaching Initiative paid forty percent above the city rate, covered housing, and required a three-month commitment. I found it on a Tuesday, applied on a Wednesday, and had an acceptance letter in my inbox by Thursday morning. I told myself it was good luck. I should have known better.

The town was three hours east of the city by bus — a place where the main street had a hardware store, a diner, and a post office that doubled as a notary, and where the welcome sign had been repainted recently enough that the letters still looked optimistic. My housing was a small room above the coordinator's office, clean and spare, with a window that looked out over a field that had gone gold with the season. Under different circumstances, I might have liked it.

The coordinator was a woman named Patrice, sixty-something, with reading glasses on a beaded chain and the particular warmth of someone who had never once in her life failed to offer a person a cup of tea. She walked me through the classroom setup, the student roster, the supply closet. Then, at the end of the tour, she pressed a laminated welcome packet into my hands and said, cheerfully, "Of course, we're so grateful to the Gilbert Foundation for making all of this possible."

I stopped walking.

"The Gilbert Foundation," I said.

"Oh, they've been funding the initiative for two years now." Patrice beamed. "Such a generous program. The director is very hands-on, apparently."

I smiled at her. It took everything I had.

I waited until I was outside, around the corner from the coordinator's office, standing in a narrow alley between the building and a fence that smelled like cut wood and rain. Then I called him.

He answered on the second ring.

"Vivienne." His voice was exactly as unhurried as it had been in my ruined apartment. "How's the air out there? Cleaner, I'd imagine."

"You funded the program."

"I fund a number of programs. It's a tax structure."

"Fletcher."

"It's a legitimate rural education initiative. The students are real. The salary is real. The contract you signed is entirely enforceable." A pause, measured and deliberate. "Is there a problem?"

The fence post was rough under my palm. I breathed in through my nose and out through my teeth and reminded myself that losing my composure would cost me more than it would cost him.

"You're unbelievable," I said.

"So I've been told." Another pause. "Enjoy Maplecreek, Vivienne. I hear the autumn is beautiful."

He hung up first.

I stood in the alley for another thirty seconds. Then I went back inside and introduced myself to my new classroom, because the students were real, and that part wasn't his.

He arrived two days later.

I was at the diner counter with a coffee and a stack of papers to grade when the door opened and Fletcher walked in wearing a jacket that cost more than my monthly rent and an expression of complete, infuriating calm. He looked around the room the way he always looked at rooms — like he was already deciding what to do with them.

Patrice, who happened to be at the next table, lit up like a lamp. "Oh, is this your husband?"

The word landed in the middle of the diner like a dropped tray.

"No," I said.

"We had a disagreement on the drive up," Fletcher said, sliding onto the stool beside me with the ease of someone who had been expected. "She's still annoyed. You know how it is."

I turned to look at him. He was already looking at me, and the expression on his face — patient, faintly amused, the portrait of a man enduring a minor domestic inconvenience — made something behind my sternum pull tight with the specific fury of someone being outmaneuvered in public.

"We are not," I said, to Patrice, to the diner, to the three other tables that had gone quiet, "married."

"She says that," Fletcher told Patrice, in a tone of gentle, long-suffering affection that I wanted to remove from his face with a spatula.

Patrice patted my hand. "All couples go through rough patches, dear."

The wildflowers arrived on Friday.

I was mid-sentence — something about long vowel sounds — when the classroom door opened and a seven-year-old marched in with the gravity of someone delivering a state document. He had dirt on his knees and a fistful of yellow flowers that had been picked with more enthusiasm than care, several of them already wilting from the heat of his grip.

"These are for you," he announced. "I'm Theo. I'm going to marry you."

The class dissolved. I crouched down to his level, accepted the flowers with the seriousness they deserved, and told him that was very kind and that he should probably sit in on the lesson first to see if we were compatible.

Theo considered this and decided it was fair.

I didn't notice Fletcher at the back of the room until I stood up. He was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, watching Theo with an expression I had never once seen on his face in three years of knowing him.

It was the expression of a man who had just identified a problem he had not anticipated.

By the time I dismissed the class for lunch, there was an espresso setup on my desk — a proper one, with a hand-grinder and a small ceramic cup — and a catered lunch arranged beside it with the quiet precision of someone making a point. A card was propped against the cup. It read, in Fletcher's handwriting: *Wildflowers wilt.*

I looked at it for a long moment.

Then I poured the espresso, because it was genuinely excellent, and I was not going to let him have that.
