Chapter 1

1

The entire city of Beijing envied Lu Ze and me as a pair of fairy-tale lovers.

We grew up together as childhood friends, but later I was transferred abroad for work. Unwilling to waste Lu Ze's youthful years, I painfully suggested a breakup to him. However, he took out a ring and proposed to me on the spot, promising to register the marriage the first chance he got.

Yet, when I returned to China, he didn't even mention it and brought a female assistant to my welcome-back party.

The next day, I had a lawyer help me dissolve the engagement.

But when he received the engagement termination agreement, he went mad, searching for me all over the world.

1

On the first day after ending my long-distance relationship and returning to my country, my friends threw me a lively welcome-back party.

During the party, everyone congratulated me on my return, but Lu Ze, as my fiancé, showed no interest at all and was laughing and talking with his female assistant.

If it had been before, I might have felt upset and argued with him.

But at this moment, I was exceptionally calm.

Sensing the tense atmosphere, a friend quickly stepped in to ease the situation: "Oh, she's just a small secretary of Lu Ze's. You know how responsible he is; he definitely has to show concern for his subordinates."

But Lu Ze interrupted: "We haven't registered yet, so you can't call her sister-in-law."

I felt as if I'd been slapped hard in front of everyone, and my friend stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do.

Everything that happened tonight felt like a joke. I forced a smile: "It's okay, I understand."

Lu Ze seemed a bit surprised by my attitude, shielding Gu Qingqing behind him, full of protective intent: "She's not feeling well and can't be left unattended. I'm taking her to the hospital now, so you take a cab home by yourself tonight."

"I'll organize a grander welcome-back party for you another day."

After saying this, he didn't even bother to glance at me as he carefully draped his coat over Gu Qingqing and turned to leave, not considering how I'd manage the mess left behind.

Though the air conditioning in the room was on, nothing was colder than my heart. He forgot that I, too, have stomach issues.

With his irresponsible mid-event departure, I had to endure my discomfort and continue socializing. In the end, I was drenched in cold sweat from cramping all over and dragged myself to a nearby clinic for an IV drip.

The doctor frowned and scolded me: "Young people these days don't know how to take care of themselves. Don't you fear sudden death drinking so much? Where's your boyfriend? Have him come keep you company. Judging by this, you'll need an IV for the entire night."

I shook my head with a bitter smile. By this time, Lu Ze should be with his little secretary.

I called him, and after a long time, he finally answered, cutting me off impatiently before I could finish:

"If you're not well, go see a doctor. I can't cure illnesses."

"When did you start having this problem? Don't tell me you made it up to trick me."

I showed a slight bitter smile; turns out it wasn't about my health, but rather a change of heart.

In his mind, the most important person was no longer me.

I thought, it's time to put an end to these more than twenty years of feelings.

After finishing the IV drip by myself, I returned home the next day and immediately drafted a marriage dissolution agreement.

Raising my head to gaze at this villa, it was the birthday gift Lu Ze gave me back then.

He once said, "Before we get married, this will be a little home belonging only to you and me."

Back then, I was so happy, fantasizing about our future married life, but now it's just me sitting alone in the cold, dark living room.

My memories were interrupted halfway by the sound of Lu Ze opening the door. He noticed the suitcase I left in the hallway unopened and was slightly taken aback: "Are you still throwing a tantrum?"

I smiled indifferently, "I just haven't had time to pack."

Lu Ze's voice hesitated, "Don't overthink it. You've lived abroad alone for so many years and managed just fine, but Qingqing is different. She's too naive and clueless, someone has to watch over her. I stayed at the hospital all night."

This was the first time since I returned to the country that he had the conscience to think about explaining to me.

I responded with a nonchalant hum.

He took a few steps forward and looked down at the bruised needle marks on my hand from the IV drip: "Did you go to see a doctor by yourself? Are you feeling better now?"

I nodded, "Much better already."

Only then did Lu Ze breathe a sigh of relief, pulling a fancy gift box from his suit pocket, "This is a gift to celebrate your return. I picked it out personally. Open it and take a look."

I opened the package, and what caught my eye was an extremely valuable necklace.

"I have to go to the office today. I'll leave after giving you the gift. I know you've always been sensible."

So, in his eyes, being generous and sensible means learning to endure, as if all grievances are insignificant.

But has he ever thought that I am his fiancée, and yet, on the first day of my return, he went to take care of another woman, and even the necklace he gave me was a repeat from before.

It seems he's forgotten everything.

I originally wanted to find some time to have a detailed talk about canceling the engagement, but it seems there's no chance.

So I directly took out the prepared marriage dissolution agreement and handed it to him, "Take a look, and if there's no problem, sign it."

Without even glancing at it, Lu Ze knocked the agreement away: "I told you I have work to do, don't bother me."

Papers flew everywhere, and I didn't respond, just silently bent down to pick up and organize the agreement I spent the night writing.

Perhaps my silence lasted too long, and a trace of apology finally appeared on his face: "I didn't mean it, I've been in a bad mood lately, please understand."

It's okay, I answered silently in my heart.

Because I no longer care.

I will not care about someone insignificant.

Since the engagement hasn't been broken this time, then perhaps next time, and if not, the time after that. Ultimately, we must part ways.

Once I've made up my mind, I never change it.

Lu Ze wanted to say something, but it was interrupted by the sound of a phone ringing. It wasn't the default music from the phone system, but a recording of a girl's sweet voice, softly calling his name.

It's the voice of his little secretary.

Lu Ze hurriedly answered the call, while glancing at me: "My secretary set it up for fun. Don't mind her, I'll come back and have dinner with you another day." Then, feeling guilty, he turned hurriedly and left.

I hadn't said anything, yet he already had all the excuses prepared for her.

It seems he truly has feelings for her now.

But he forgot that the original special ringtone on his phone was my favorite piano piece.

Lu Ze, being so young yet already a CEO, is always overwhelmingly busy, sometimes forgetting to answer calls. So he deliberately set my call alert to a melodious piano tune, ensuring that no matter how busy he gets, he won't miss my call.

But all the past moments, he doesn't remember anymore.

Turns out, even the most beautiful memories will gradually become nothing more than a grain of rice stuck on a shirt as time flows, leaving behind nothing but endless disgust.

I looked up one last time at this cold villa.

I didn't take the necklace Lu Ze gave me; instead, I threw it straight into the trash bin. Once upon a time, he gently put this necklace around my neck himself, with a radiant smile, saying he would gift me something even more beautiful every birthday in the future.

Promises of the past were broken by his own hand, even forgetting the gifts he once gave.

I let out a mocking laugh, picked up my suitcase, and left without a backward glance.
