After My Wolf Awoke, He Chose His Mistress

I woke up on the cold grass before sunrise, and the world smelled. That is the only way I know how to say it. For nineteen years I had lived inside a kind of soft, clean nothing. People around me would tilt their heads, breathe in, and smile or stiffen at things I could not feel. I had learned to fake the small reactions. A nod. A wrinkled nose. A pretend laugh when someone asked, "Don't you smell that?" Now my whole body smelled. Pine sap from the trees behind the pack house. Wet dirt.

Chapter 1

I woke up on the cold grass before sunrise, and the world smelled.

That is the only way I know how to say it. For nineteen years I had lived inside a kind of soft, clean nothing. People around me would tilt their heads, breathe in, and smile or stiffen at things I could not feel. I had learned to fake the small reactions. A nod. A wrinkled nose. A pretend laugh when someone asked, "Don't you smell that?"

Now my whole body smelled.

Pine sap from the trees behind the pack house. Wet dirt. The iron edge of my own mate-mark on my neck, like a coin held too long in a hot palm. And under all of it, a deeper scent I had never known — green, almost sweet, almost mine. My own.

I pressed my hands flat into the earth. My fingers shook.

*I'm sorry I'm late.*

The voice was inside my head, quiet, female, gentle. Not Damon's mind-link. Not anyone outside me. Her.

*I'm sorry,* she said again. *I'm here now.*

I bent forward until my forehead touched the grass and cried without making a sound. Not from pain. From the simple, terrible relief of being whole. At sixteen I should have heard her. At twenty-two I had stopped praying for it. Now, three years married, with a pup just barely rooted in my belly — *that* I could feel too, a tiny warm thread under my heart — she had come.

I was Taylor Sullivan, Luna of Crescent Hollow Pack. And for the first time in my life, I knew it from the inside out.

I laughed, wet and shaky, into the dirt.

I had to tell Damon.

***

I ran in bare feet through the side door of the pack house, my robe still damp with dew. I wanted to see his face. Three years of him telling me it didn't matter, that he loved me wolfless or otherwise — three years of believing him through the clean, scentless fog. I wanted to give him this.

The house was quiet. I followed his scent without thinking, and that alone almost stopped me on the stairs. I could *track* him. Pine. Cold pine, like winter mornings. I had never known he smelled like that.

I was smiling when I reached the sitting room doorway.

Then I wasn't.

Damon was on the long couch with his head tipped back. His shirt was open at the collar. A woman was tucked against him, her face pressed to the side of his throat, breathing him in slow. Her dark hair spilled over his chest. His hand was on the back of her neck, holding her there.

I knew her.

Melissa Ryan. High school photo in the locked drawer of his study. The one I had seen in year one and chosen not to ask about, because I trusted him.

The scent in the room hit me a second later, and my new wolf staggered.

White cedar. Dark amber. Wound through his pine like thread through cloth, deep and old and *practiced* — not a first time, not a second, the kind of layered marking that only happens when two wolves have been rubbing themselves into each other for a long, long time. Her throat was bared to him. His was bared to her.

*Mate-marking.*

My wolf screamed. It was a real sound inside my skull, raw and animal and so loud I almost answered out loud.

I didn't.

Something in me — something older than the wolf, something I had built quietly over nineteen years of being the girl who couldn't smell — stepped forward and held my face still. My mouth did not open. My hand did not lift. My weight did not shift on the floorboard that I now noticed creaked under my heel.

I stepped back. One step. Two. The hallway swallowed me. They never looked up.

I made it to the guest bathroom on the first floor before my knees gave. I locked the door, dropped to the tile, and threw up everything in my stomach until there was nothing left but a thin sour string of bile and the taste of pine.

When I could breathe again, I pressed my palm flat against the mark on my neck. The skin was hot. The bond pulled, dumb and loyal, toward the room I had just left.

I sat on the cold tile and I thought.

Damon believed my wolf was still asleep. Damon believed I was still scent-blind. Three years of that belief was the floor he and Melissa had been walking on. If I screamed now, if I ran into that room and accused him, the only weapon I owned — the one he didn't know I had — was gone.

*Don't,* my wolf whispered. She was crying too. *Don't give it to him yet.*

I closed my eyes and made a list inside my head, the way my mother had taught me to make lists when I was small and overwhelmed.

Melissa's scent: white cedar, dark amber.

His hand on the back of her neck: not new. Familiar. Habitual.

The couch: *our* couch.

How many times. How many rooms. How many nights I had thought he was running pack business and the house had smelled, to me, of nothing.

I wiped my mouth on the back of my wrist. My hand was steady now. That frightened me a little.

*All right,* I told her. *We watch. We learn. We don't move until we can't be dragged back.*

She did not have a name yet. I did not have time to give her one.

***

My pregnancy check had been on the calendar for a week. I kept it.

Ledger Bennett, our pack Healer, met me in the small clinic on the east side of the house. He was tall and quiet, with careful hands and the kind of face that did not perform anything. I had always liked him. He used my name when he spoke to me, which sounds like nothing until you live three years as a title.

"Taylor." He gestured to the table. "How are you feeling?"

"Fine." My voice came out level. "A little tired."

He ran the scan. He measured. He listened to the small, stubborn flutter under my ribs and made a soft sound that meant *good.* But when he straightened, he looked at my eyes a second too long.

"Your pupils," he said, mild. "They're tracking faster than last visit."

"Are they?"

He didn't answer that. He picked up his pen. "How are you sleeping?"

I smiled the smile I had been practicing since I was sixteen. "Well, thank you, Ledger."

He held my gaze another half second. I felt him deciding something. Then he wrote in his notes and did not press.

"Come back next week," he said. "Earlier if anything changes."

"I will."

At the door I almost turned around. I almost said his name again. I didn't know him well enough yet to know if he could be trusted, and trusting wrongly now would cost me my pup.

I left.

I went to Lilyana's house at dusk, with a basket of the cinnamon rolls she liked, as if it were any visit.

Lilyana Boyd was my best friend in the pack and the only person inside these walls who had never once looked at me like a charity case. She had pupped two weeks ago — a hard birth, the baby healthy, her body still mending. She opened the door in a loose shirt with a milk stain on the shoulder and her hair pulled up crooked, and the second she saw my face she pulled me inside and shut the door behind us.

"Tay." She set the basket down without looking at it. "What."

I told her.

The wolf. The garden. The pine and the cedar. The couch. Three years of a house I could not smell. My voice did not shake until I got to the part about the couch, and even then only a little.

Lilyana sat down hard on the arm of her sofa. The baby snuffled in the bassinet behind her and she did not look away from me.

"Taylor." She caught both my hands. Her grip was fierce, hot. "You go to the Council. Tonight. I'll come with you. I'll carry the baby in a sling, I don't care —"

"Lily."

"— Silas Vance is in district this month, I heard it from —"

"*Lily.*" I squeezed her hands until she stopped. "The Council can't undo a mate bond. Only Damon can speak the rejection. Until he does, the bond will pull me back to him no matter where I run. You know that."

Her mouth opened. Closed. Her eyes went wet.

"Then make him say it," she whispered.

"I will." I looked past her at the bassinet, at the small pink fist curled above the blanket. My own pup turned, low and warm, under my heart. "But not until I have everything. Not until he can't twist it. I need dates. Names. The apprentice who orders her perfume into the house, if there is one. I need it to be so heavy he can't lie his way out of saying the words."

Lilyana studied me a long time.

"You're different," she said finally. "Since this morning. You're — *here.*"

I almost smiled.

"I know," I said. "She came."

Lilyana's eyes filled all the way over. She didn't ask who. She knew.

She got up, went to the nursing basket by the chair, and lifted out the false bottom I had not known was there. Underneath was empty space, lined in soft cloth.

"Then start writing," she said. "And you keep it here. He'll never look in a thing with a baby in it."

I took the small leather notebook she pressed into my hands. The cover was cool. My pulse settled against it.

Outside, the dark was coming down over Crescent Hollow. Somewhere across the territory, on a couch that used to be mine, my husband was probably still breathing in another woman's throat.

I opened the notebook to the first blank page.

I began.

The soft chime of the Moonveil Medical Clinic's front desk barely registered as I sorted through the morning's patient files. My hands moved with practiced efficiency, arranging the folders by severity and specialty—a ritual that had become as natural as breathing over my seven years as Pack Healer. The scent of antiseptic and healing herbs filled the air, a comforting familiarity that had always centered me. I looked up at the sound of hesitant footsteps, my eyes finding Kylie Hudson standing near the entrance. My mentee's usual confidence seemed muted today, replaced by an unusual nervousness that made her fidget with the hem of her shirt. Her scent carried a strange mix of excitement and anxiety. 'Healer Fox,' she began, her voice softer than usual. 'I wanted to thank you personally for everything you've done for me. I know I'm just an Omega, but your mentorship has meant the world.' I set down the file I'd been reviewing and gave her my full attention. 'Kylie, you don't need to thank me.

The music from the packhouse thrummed through my chest as I navigated the crowd, searching for Ace. Three years I'd hidden who I really was, living as a low-ranking omega in this pack, all because I believed love should be about the person, not the title. My wolf stirred restlessly inside me, which was strange. She'd been quiet for weeks. "Have you seen Ace?" I asked a passing Delta, but he barely glanced at me before shaking his head and moving on. Story of my life here. I caught his scent then—cedar and rain, distinctly him—leading away from the main celebration toward the garden sheds. My heart picked up speed.

My hands trembled as I smoothed my dress, waiting for Alpha Arthur to return. He had survived the transplant. I thought our Fated bond would finally be sealed. But when the heavy doors swung open, the warmth I expected was gone. Arthur walked in clutching another woman, Diana. He looked at me like I was a stain on the rug. "The Moon Goddess played a trick," he sneered, his eyes glazed with a chemical devotion. "My donor's blood chooses her. The blood bond overrides some archaic fate." He didn't just reject me; he made me a servant in my own home. When Diana framed me for breaking a ring, Arthur didn't hesitate. He ordered the Silver Whip. "Arthur, please! I'm pregnant!" I screamed, shielding my stomach. "Stop lying to save your skin," he spat. He lashed me ten times with wolfsbane-dipped leather. I lay in the snow, feeling the warm blood of my miscarriage soak the ground, while he walked away to comfort his mistress. He killed his own son for a lie. That night, I signed my rejection in blood and vanished into the darkness. Five months later, I returned. Not as a weak Omega, but as the legendary White Wolf, holding the hand of the most powerful Alpha in the region. Arthur fell to his knees in the mud when he saw me, weeping. "I'll do anything. I'll give up the title." I looked down at him coldly and handed him the whip. "Ten lashes," I whispered. "For the baby you killed."

"Hattie, you should try to mingle more," whispered Elena, one of the few friends I had in the Crimson Fang Pack. "These gatherings are important for—" Her words died on her lips as a ripple of murmurs swept through the crowd. The sea of wolves parted, and my breath caught in my throat. Antonio Richards strode into the clearing, his broad shoulders squared and his presence commanding immediate attention. The Alpha of the Crimson Fang Pack had returned from his border patrol. My wolf suddenly howled within me, a primal recognition that made my knees weak.
