Chapter 2

"Move your bag, Gina. Pregnant women require a stress-free environment."

Amanda dropped her oversized tote onto the visitor’s chair. Her swollen belly jutted forward, an undeniable centerpiece in the sterile hospital suite.

Just yesterday, Cody had woken from his coma. Today, his mistress moved in.

"This is my husband's room," I stated, blocking her path to the bed.

Amanda smiled. It was a sharp, calculating expression. She pulled out her phone, tapped the screen twice, and shoved it directly into my face.

"Your husband?" she asked. "Look at the dates."

My eyes tracked the bright display. A text thread. Hundreds of messages.

*I miss you.*

*I wish you were here tonight.*

She swiped to a new screen. Bank receipts. Wire transfers for ten thousand dollars, fifteen thousand dollars. All sent from Cody’s private account.

Then, a photograph. Cody kissing Amanda’s cheek on a sunlit patio. The timestamp read two months ago. Exactly one week before his car crash.

"We never stopped talking," Amanda said. "Five years, Gina. You were just a convenient placeholder while I established my career abroad."

I stepped away from her and faced the hospital bed. Cody sat propped against the pillows. He did not blink. He did not jump to defend me.

"Cody," I said, my voice cracking. "Tell her to get out."

"No," Cody replied.

"You think a few photos and bank transfers erase our marriage?" I asked, my hands balling into fists.

"Sign the divorce papers," Cody instructed. His tone lacked any trace of warmth. "My lawyer will email them tonight."

"You are throwing away five years for a woman who left you?"

"She came back," he said. "That is all that matters."

A harsh, jagged laugh tore from my throat. It bounced off the walls, loud and entirely out of place. I shouldn't be laughing. I should be screaming.

"I washed your body for thirty days," I told him, my voice dropping. "I kept you alive."

"And I am grateful," he stated flatly. "But Amanda is carrying my child. She is giving this family the heir it actually needs."

The word *heir* struck me like a physical blow. Five years of failed fertility treatments, of crying alone in bathroom stalls, all weaponized in a single breath.

I spun around and marched out the door.

Two hours later, I stood in our master bedroom, shoving clothes into a suitcase. The house felt massive. It felt completely empty.

I walked into Cody's walk-in closet to grab my winter coat. My gaze caught the steel safe bolted to the floor in the corner.

He had changed everything else over the last year. The security codes, the joint bank accounts. But what about this?

I knelt on the hardwood and punched four digits into the keypad. `0-8-1-2`. My birthday.

The heavy metal door clicked open.

A bizarre knot of hope tightened in my chest. He kept my birthday as the code. Maybe a part of him still cared. Maybe the traumatic brain injury was simply messing with his mind.

I reached inside the dark compartment. No jewelry boxes. No emergency cash. Just a thick manila envelope.

I pulled it out and undid the string clasp. A legal document slid into my hands.

*Confidential Settlement Agreement - Amanda Davis - 2019.*

I scanned the dense paragraphs. *...Amanda Davis agrees to permanently relocate outside the United States... in exchange for a lump sum of two million dollars...*

She was paid off. Five years ago. Right before our wedding.

A sharp sting slapped the back of my hand. The papers ripped from my grasp.

"You have absolutely no business snooping in there."

Eleanor, my mother-in-law, stood over me. Her jaw clamped shut as she shoved the folded document into her designer purse.

"You paid her to leave?" I stood up, matching her height. "Before Cody and I even got married?"

"I protected my son," Eleanor snapped. "And now I am protecting my grandchild."

"She signed a contract! She took your money!"

"Things change, Gina." Eleanor pointed a manicured finger toward the hallway. "Pack your bags and leave quietly. If you dig into the past, I will personally make sure you walk away with nothing."

"What kind of mother pays off her son's girlfriend, then welcomes her back with open arms?" I asked.

"The kind who values bloodlines over sentimentality," Eleanor replied coldly. "Amanda is carrying a Garrison. You are carrying nothing."

"He is my husband," I argued.

"Not anymore." She turned on her heel and marched out of the room.

I stood frozen among my half-packed bags. The truth was a tangled mess, and I was trapped right in the center.

***

My phone buzzed in my pocket. A hospital number flashed across the screen.

"Hello?"

"Mrs. Garrison?" The nurse sounded frantic. "You need to come back immediately. Cody’s vitals just plummeted. It is an emergency."

The phone slipped from my ear and hit the floor.

I did not think about Amanda. I did not think about the divorce or the secret contract. I just ran.

I broke every speed limit getting back to Mount Sinai. My tires squealed as I parked illegally. My lungs burned as I sprinted down the white corridor toward his room.

I slammed the door open. "Cody!"

The words died in my throat.

There was no doctor. No emergency crash cart. No failing heart monitor.

Cody was not dying. He was pinning Amanda against the mattress. His hands tangled in her hair, pulling her close. Their lips were locked in a frantic, messy kiss.

My sudden entrance broke them apart.

Amanda wiped her mouth. A triumphant grin spread across her face. She grabbed Cody’s wrist and dragged his palm flat against her swollen stomach.

"Oh, Cody," she cooed loudly, ignoring my presence. "Feel that? Our baby just kicked."

He stroked her stomach. A tender, loving gesture I had never once received in half a decade.

Then, he shifted his cold eyes to me. "Why are you back?"

"The nurse called," I stammered. My fingers gripped the metal doorframe to keep from falling. "She said you were crashing."

"I paid her to say that," Amanda chimed in. She adjusted her shirt, looking thoroughly satisfied. "I figured you needed a visual demonstration to finally get the hint."

"You are sick," I whispered.

"I am victorious," Amanda corrected.

I ignored her entirely. I stared directly at the man I had loved for five years. "You let her do this? You let her play games with your life?"

Cody’s expression hardened. He didn't flinch. He didn't offer a single apology.

"You still do not get it, do you, Gina?" The cruelty in his tone sliced through the quiet room. "I never loved you."

The floor tilted beneath my feet. Five years of marriage, erased in five words.

I backed away. I couldn't breathe in this room anymore.

I turned and bolted down the hallway. I pushed through the hospital’s double glass doors and hit the pavement outside.

Heavy rain poured from the black sky. It soaked through my thin shirt in seconds, pasting my hair to my face. I stumbled onto the wet sidewalk, the city traffic roaring around me.

A sleek black car pulled up to the curb, its tires splashing muddy water against my legs. The tinted back window slowly rolled down.
