Chapter 5

I heard about the press conference from Marcus.

He called on a Thursday morning while Liam was eating cereal. I stepped into the bathroom and closed the door. Marcus's voice was even, measured—a man who delivered bad news the way a surgeon makes incisions: clean, precise, no wasted motion.

"Tyler's attorney filed the fault clause motion this morning," he said. "They're claiming evidence of infidelity and erratic behavior. Press conference is booked for Friday. The Fairmont Olympic."

I sat on the edge of the tub. "What kind of evidence?"

"Photographs. Video." A pause. "They're planning to acquire it before Friday."

I understood what that meant. I thanked him. I hung up.

I sat there for a moment. The bathroom was small and white and very quiet. I could hear the cartoon playing in the other room. Liam laughing at something.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my left wrist. I held it there.

Then I stood up and went back to make sure he finished his breakfast.

They came on a Tuesday.

Liam was still under observation—a secondary complication, the doctors called it, a shadow on the scan they wanted to watch. He was sleeping when I heard the noise in the corridor. Voices. Heels. A man's low instruction to someone I couldn't see.

I opened the door.

Loretta was already there. She wore a charcoal blazer and her good pearls. She looked like she was attending a board meeting. Three men stood behind her—large, unhurried, the kind of men who know how to fill a hallway. Tyler was at the far end of the corridor, arms folded, watching.

"There she is." Loretta's voice carried. Loud enough for the nurses' station. Loud enough for the family two doors down. "I'm here as a concerned grandmother. I have evidence of misconduct. I'm not leaving until my grandson is in safe hands."

A nurse looked up from the station. A visitor in the hall stopped walking.

I stepped forward. "Loretta—"

The first man grabbed my arm.

It happened fast. The second man reached for my collar. I heard the fabric before I felt it—a sharp tearing sound at the shoulder seam. Loretta raised her phone. A camera flash fired. I twisted toward Liam's door. My only thought was the door. Get to the door. Get between them and Liam.

"Nurse!" My voice came out louder than I expected. "I need a nurse—"

Another flash. The fabric tore again at the collar. I could feel the air on my shoulder. I kept moving toward the door. My hand found the frame.

From the end of the corridor, Tyler watched. He didn't move. His arms stayed folded. His expression was arranged into something careful and concerned, the face of a man managing a difficult situation he didn't create. I'd seen that face a thousand times. At dinner parties. In front of his investors. In our living room when I asked him where he'd been.

I knew that face better than I knew my own.

The alarm sounded. Hospital security came through the stairwell door—two guards, moving fast. Loretta lowered her phone but didn't stop filming. The three men stepped back, not far, just enough.

And then Tyler moved. He uncrossed his arms and walked forward, his voice dropping into something reasonable and measured. "I'm sorry about this," he said to the guard. "My wife has been under enormous stress. We're very concerned about her state of mind."

The guard looked at me. My shirt was torn at the shoulder. My hair was loose. I was standing in a hospital corridor outside my unconscious son's room with my hand gripping the door frame.

I watched the guard's face shift. The hesitation. The calculation.

Something in me went very quiet.

Not afraid. Not desperate. Just—still. The way water goes still right before it freezes.

Then I heard the heels.

Not Kaylani's heels. Those were quick, light, performative. These were different. Slow. Deliberate. Each step landing like a period at the end of a sentence.

I heard them before I saw her.

The door at the far end of the corridor opened. Jacqueline Collins walked through it. She wore a gray wool coat and no expression at all. Behind her came four men in dark suits who moved the way water moves around stone—smoothly, inevitably. And beside her, Marcus Webb, leather portfolio under his arm, already scanning the hallway with the calm attention of a man cataloguing evidence.

The corridor seemed to shrink.

Loretta turned. The three men shifted. Tyler's arms dropped to his sides.

My mother walked the full length of that hallway without hurrying. She looked at the torn fabric on my shoulder. She looked at Loretta's phone. She looked at Tyler.

She didn't say anything yet.

She just walked to where I was standing and put herself between me and every single person in that hall.

I exhaled. It was the first full breath I'd taken in days.

Marcus opened his portfolio. My mother turned to face the room.

And the quiet in me stopped being the quiet of someone holding still.

It became something else entirely.
