Chapter 3

The hotel room was small. Beige walls. A window that looked out at the hospital parking lot. I sat on the edge of the bed with my laptop open on my knees. Liam was asleep in the other bed, his breathing steady and soft. The inhaler sat on the nightstand within arm's reach. I'd checked it twice already.

I opened the folder I hadn't touched in months. The encrypted one. The one I'd labeled *Business Records* because that's what they were. Seven years of emails. Investor introductions. Partnership requests. Every time I'd called my mother and asked her to route an opportunity Tyler's way. Every time I'd made sure the credit landed on him.

I scrolled to the first entry. March 2017. Tyler's Series A funding round. He'd been so proud when the lead investor signed. He'd taken me to dinner and talked about his vision for two hours straight. I'd smiled and asked questions and never mentioned that I'd spent three weeks convincing that investor to take the meeting. The email chain was all there. My words. My mother's corporate letterhead. The careful language that made it look like organic interest.

I kept scrolling. June 2018. The partnership with the logistics firm that cut Tyler's shipping costs in half. He'd framed the signed contract and hung it in his office. I'd written the introduction. October 2019. The consulting deal that brought in half a million in revenue. Tyler had called it his breakthrough moment. I'd brokered it over lunch with one of my mother's board members.

Every deal. Every investor. Every contract that built the company Tyler called his legacy. I'd documented all of it. Not because I planned to use it. Because I couldn't help myself. My mother raised me to keep records. To know exactly what I built and when and how. It was instinct. Muscle memory.

I reached the end of the file. The last entry was dated six months ago. A real estate connection that helped Tyler secure his new office lease at below-market rates. He'd sent me a text that day: *Finally catching a break.* I'd read it and said nothing.

I closed the laptop. I stared at the dark screen. My reflection looked back at me. Tired. Hollow. I opened the laptop again.

I started a new document. I copied every email. Every introduction. Every deal. I organized them by date and dollar amount. I added notes—context that would make sense to someone who didn't know the story. By the time I finished, it was three in the morning. My eyes burned. My hands ached. The document was sixty-two pages long.

I saved it. I backed it up in three separate cloud accounts. Then I sat in the dark and listened to Liam breathe.

The notification came at nine. A text from the bank. *Your access to joint account ending in 4392 has been restricted. Contact account holder for details.*

I stared at the message. I opened the banking app. The joint account showed zero available balance. Not empty—restricted. I couldn't transfer. Couldn't withdraw. Couldn't access anything.

I checked my personal account. Still there. Still untouched. Tyler didn't know about it because I'd opened it under my legal name—Brynn Adelaide Collins—not the Morrison name I'd used for seven years. The balance was modest by my family's standards. Enough to live on for months. Enough that his little freeze meant nothing.

But he didn't know that. He thought he'd just cut off my oxygen.

Another notification. An email from Liam's school. *Dear Mrs. Morrison, per the request of the account holder, your name has been removed from the authorized pickup list effective immediately. Please contact the main office if you have questions.*

I read it twice. My hands didn't shake. I forwarded the email to my personal folder. Then I called the school. The receptionist was apologetic but firm. Mr. Morrison had called that morning. He'd cited safety concerns. They had to honor the account holder's request.

I thanked her and hung up. I looked at Liam, still asleep in the other bed. His face was peaceful. Unaware. I pulled the blanket up around his shoulders.

My phone buzzed again. A text from a number I didn't recognize. I opened it. A photo. Me, walking out of the hospital yesterday. My hair was a mess. My face was pale. The angle made me look unsteady. Guilty. Below it, a message: *We have more. Back off or they go public.*

I took a screenshot. I saved it to the evidence folder. Then I blocked the number.

I stood up and walked to the window. The parking lot was half empty. A few cars. A delivery truck idling near the loading dock. The sky was gray and flat. Seattle in November.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my left wrist. I held it there until the pressure turned my skin white. Then I let go.

I picked up my phone and opened my contacts. I scrolled to the name I hadn't called in seven years except for business requests. My thumb hovered over it for a long time.

Then I pressed call.

It rang twice. Her voice came through, sharp and clear. "Brynn."

"Mom," I said quietly. "I need a lawyer."

There was a pause. Not surprise. Something else. Relief, maybe. "I'll have Marcus on a plane in two hours," she said. "Where are you?"

I told her. She didn't ask why. She didn't ask what happened. She just said, "Stay there. Don't talk to anyone. I'm coming."

The line went dead. I stood by the window and watched the gray sky. My reflection stared back from the glass. For the first time in days, I didn't look away.
