Chapter 1

The fall happened before breakfast. I'd been carrying Liam's backpack and a grocery bag down the lobby stairs when my heel caught the edge of a wet step. My ankle twisted. The bag split open. Apples rolled across marble. I sat there for a second, breathing through the spike of pain, while the morning doorman asked if I needed help. I said no. I always said no.

Tyler was already in the kitchen when I limped back upstairs. He glanced at my ankle—swollen, purpling—and poured himself coffee. "You should be more careful," he said. Then he left for the office. The door clicked shut. I stood there holding ice wrapped in a dish towel, listening to the silence.

By Tuesday afternoon, the swelling had gone down enough that I could walk if I moved slowly. I was folding laundry in the living room when I heard it. A wet, rattling sound. I turned. Liam was on the couch, hunched forward, his small chest jerking with each breath. His lips looked wrong. Pale at the edges. Faintly blue.

I dropped the towel and ran. "Liam, baby, look at me." His eyes were wide and scared. I grabbed his emergency inhaler from the side table, shook it, pressed it to his lips. "Breathe in. Good. Again." One puff. Two. I waited. His wheezing didn't ease. It got worse. Tighter. Faster. This wasn't a normal flare-up. This was the kind of attack that sent kids to the ICU.

I scooped him into my arms and ran for the elevator. My ankle screamed. I didn't care. I jabbed the call button. Nothing. I jabbed it again. The panel stayed dark. I pressed the intercom. "Hello? I need the elevator. My son can't breathe. Please."

Music drifted through the speaker. Laughter. The rustle of shopping bags. Then a voice—warm, unhurried, like honey over glass. Kaylani Scott. "Oh, sweetheart. We're almost done. Just give us a minute."

I pressed the button again. "He's turning blue. I need it now."

Another laugh in the background. Someone said something I couldn't make out. Kaylani's voice came back, lighter this time. "We're coming down. Just hang tight."

The intercom went silent. The elevator didn't move. Liam's breathing was a broken whistle. His fingers dug into my shirt. I looked at the stairwell door. Seventeen floors. A sprained ankle. No choice.

I pushed through the door and started down. Each step sent a shock of pain up my leg. I gripped the railing with one hand and held Liam with the other. His head lolled against my shoulder. "Stay with me, baby. Stay with me." My voice cracked. He didn't answer. By the twelfth floor, my vision blurred. Sweat dripped into my eyes. My ankle buckled on the landing. I caught myself on the rail, gasping. Liam's breathing was so shallow I could barely hear it. I kept moving.

By the sixth floor, I was crying. Silent, ugly tears that I couldn't stop. My ankle was on fire. My arms shook. I didn't let go. The lobby door finally appeared. I shoved through it and stumbled toward the front desk. The doorman's face went white. "Mrs. Morrison—"

"Call 911," I said. "And get me a cab. Now."

He did both. The cab came first. I collapsed into the back seat with Liam in my lap, and the driver ran two red lights getting us to Seattle Children's Hospital. The ER team met us at the door. They took Liam from my arms. Someone put a hand on my shoulder and guided me to a chair. I sat. My ankle throbbed. My chest felt hollow. A nurse came over with a clipboard. I answered her questions. Yes, he has asthma. Yes, he used his inhaler. No, it didn't work. No, I don't know what triggered it. She nodded and walked away. I stared at the floor.

Forty-five minutes later, Tyler walked in. His suit was perfect. His tie was still knotted. He smelled like wine and expensive cologne. He looked at me—sitting in a plastic chair with my hair stuck to my face and my ankle wrapped in a borrowed ice pack—and his jaw tightened. "What happened?"

I told him. The attack. The inhaler. The elevator. Kaylani's voice on the intercom. The seventeen floors. His expression didn't change. He pulled out his phone and typed something. A reply came back almost immediately. He read it. Then he looked at me again, and his eyes were cold.

"She said you were spiraling," he said quietly. "She said the delay was seconds. She said you're catastrophizing again."

I stared at him. "Liam almost died."

"You always make everything about you." His voice was low, controlled, devastating. "If you were half the mother you pretend to be, we wouldn't be standing here."

He walked past me into Liam's room. The door closed. I sat in the hallway alone. My arms felt empty. My chest felt emptier. I didn't cry. I pressed my thumb against the inside of my left wrist and held it there until the pressure turned my skin white.
