Chapter 5

"Noah signed the rejection," Maya said, tapping the screen of her laptop.

"He did," I replied, grabbing my wool coat from the back of the chair. "They go live for the twentieth-anniversary address in exactly forty minutes."

"You cannot go to the studio," Maya argued, blocking the bedroom door. "Adrian controls the building security. He will have you thrown out before you reach the elevators."

"I am not going to beg for my job," I told her, sliding my arms into the sleeves. "I am going to stop my husband and my son from using my face to sell a lie to the limited partners."

The production studio on the forty-second floor smelled of hot electrical wiring and expensive hairspray. The security guard at the green room door did not ask for my credentials. He simply lowered his eyes and stepped aside. I hired him five years ago to protect this exact floor.

I pushed the heavy door open.

Vanessa stood in front of the illuminated vanity mirror. She wore a cream-white blazer. My cream-white blazer. The custom wool jacket I kept hooked on the back of my office door for emergency press briefings.

"Take that off," I demanded, stopping in the center of the room.

Vanessa turned, completely unbothered. She smoothed her hands down the lapels, adjusting the fit. "Adrian insisted. He said the cream projects maternal warmth for the camera."

"It projects theft," I countered. "You are playing dress-up in a company I built from a secondhand kitchen table. The wool does not make you an executive."

"The board vote makes me an executive," Vanessa replied, checking her reflection again.

Adrian stepped out of the sound booth, adjusting a silver silk tie. He froze when he saw me standing by the catering table.

"Who let you up here?" Adrian snapped, glaring at the empty doorway.

"I still own forty percent of this firm," I reminded him. I pointed through the glass partition to the main broadcast stage.

Three leather chairs sat in a tight half-circle under the bright studio lights.

"You rearranged the seating," I stated.

"Vanessa is the new Chief Operating Officer," Adrian said, checking his gold watch. "The market expects stability. They need to see a united executive triad."

"The original triad was me, you, and Noah," I replied. "You are replacing the founding partner with your mistress and calling it family stability."

The heavy velvet curtain shifted. Noah walked into the green room, holding a stack of index cards. He stopped dead in his tracks.

"Mom," he muttered, dropping his hands to his sides.

"Are you wearing my clothes too, Noah?" I asked.

His jaw tightened. He looked away, staring at the floorboards. "We have to do this broadcast. The investors are panicking about the rumors. We need to project confidence."

"Places!" the floor manager yelled from the stage, waving a clipboard. "Sixty seconds to air!"

Adrian grabbed Noah by the shoulder. "Ignore her. Get to your chair and stick to the prompter."

I did not follow them onto the stage. I stayed in the shadows behind the camera operators, standing directly next to the main production monitor.

The red recording light flashed on.

Adrian opened the broadcast with standard corporate platitudes. He smiled, spoke about record profits, and praised the resilience of the Blackwell Bennett team. Then he turned to Noah.

Noah looked directly into the center lens. "We stand at a crossroads of accountability."

My stomach twisted. That was my opening hook. I wrote that exact phrase for him during his first mock-presentation in college.

"The board made a difficult choice this afternoon," Noah continued, his voice steady. He paused for two seconds. Another public speaking technique I taught him. "We chose to protect our investors from personal financial chaos."

He used my rhetorical structure to publicly brand me as a liability.

"We cannot allow individual instability to threaten the collective future of Blackwell Bennett Capital," Noah said, placing his index cards on his lap. "The transition of leadership guarantees your capital remains secure."

"Thank you, Noah," Vanessa added, leaning forward in my blazer. "We are committed to total transparency moving forward."

I pulled my new phone from my coat pocket. I opened my secure email client and selected the primary distribution list I memorized years ago. Three hundred and twelve Limited Partners.

I attached the guarantor termination notice. I attached the formal demand for an independent audit.

I typed a single sentence in the body of the email.

Blackwell Bennett Capital no longer operates with my financial backing or my ethical endorsement.

I pressed send.

On the production monitor, a digital ticker tracked live investor sentiment and subscription renewals. The green numbers rolled steadily upward as Vanessa spoke about quarterly projections.

Then, the ticker stopped.

The green numbers flashed gray. A sharp red arrow appeared next to the total capital metric. The renewal rate plummeted from eighty percent to twelve percent in a matter of seconds.

The floor manager tapped his headset, his eyes widening in panic. He waved a tablet frantically at the teleprompter operator.

Adrian noticed the movement in the shadows. He glanced off-camera, his professional smile slipping into a hard scowl. He read the plunging numbers on the floor manager's screen.

"Cut the feed," Adrian hissed, abandoning his microphone.

The studio screens went black.

Adrian stormed off the stage, his dress shoes slamming against the wooden floorboards. He bypassed Vanessa and marched straight toward me.

"What did you just do?" he yelled, pointing a finger at my face.

"I provided the total transparency Vanessa just promised," I said, sliding the phone back into my pocket. "The investors now have the audit demand you rejected."

"You are destroying your own son's inheritance!" Adrian shouted.

"I am stopping you from destroying his freedom," I fired back.

Adrian glared at me, his chest heaving. He did not argue further. He simply raised his hand and snapped his fingers over his shoulder.

A man in a sharp gray suit stepped out from the green room. Gregory Davis, the lead corporate counsel. He carried a thick manila envelope.

"Give it to her," Adrian ordered.

Gregory handed me the envelope. The heavy paper felt dense with legal threats.

"Open it," Adrian demanded.

I pulled the metal clasp back and slid out a bound stack of documents. The bold header read Family Settlement Agreement.

"Flip to page seven," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register.

I turned the thick pages, scanning the dense legal text. I found the highlighted clause sitting in the dead center of the page.

Claire Bennett admits to solely transferring the sum of $18.4 million without board approval. In exchange for this admission, Blackwell Bennett Capital agrees to permanently waive all legal pursuit of Noah Blackwell's project authorization signatures.
