Chapter 2

"That is correct, Marcus," I said, watching the floor numbers count down on the digital display above the elevator door. "Terminate the guarantor status immediately."

"Mrs. Bennett, the bank's charter requires a forty-eight-hour mandatory holding period before the credit freeze takes full effect," Marcus replied, his voice tinny and distorted through the phone's speaker. "I cannot expedite the timeline."

"I am withdrawing my personal backing right now," I told him. "Blackwell Bennett Capital no longer has access to my private equity."

"I understand your position, but the credit agreement requires the waiting period. For the next forty-eight hours, your pledged assets remain contractually tied to the credit lines. If Adrian defaults before Wednesday, you are still liable."

"Just process the termination," I said, pressing the end call button as the steel doors slid open into the marble lobby.

The clock was running. Forty-eight hours until I was truly free of Adrian's financial wreckage.

Forty minutes later, I pushed my key into the brass lock of our Manhattan penthouse.

The heavy mahogany door swung inward. The scent of roasted garlic and rosemary drifted down the hallway, completely out of place against the cold reality of the afternoon.

I walked past the foyer console, my shoes sinking into the Persian runner, and stepped into the formal dining room.

Vanessa Gentry sat at the head of the long oak table—my exact seat every Sunday night for the past decade. She held a silver fork, cutting into a piece of glazed salmon. A half-empty glass of Chardonnay sat next to her plate.

Noah sat two chairs down, pushing grilled asparagus around his expensive china plate. He didn't look up when I entered.

"You have a remarkable sense of entitlement, Vanessa," I said, dropping my leather tote onto the nearest chair. The heavy bag hit the wood with a solid thud.

Vanessa didn't flinch. She chewed, swallowed, and dabbed her mouth with a linen napkin. "Adrian asked me to coordinate the evening press release from the residence. The office switchboard is jammed with reporters."

"So you decided to coordinate it from my dinner plate," I replied. "Did you cook the salmon yourself, or did you expense a private chef to the corporate account?"

Noah finally lifted his head. "Mom, stop. Dad just wanted her close by to help handle the crisis. It's strictly logistical."

"Logistical," I repeated, staring at my son. "Your father filed for divorce and fired me three hours ago. Having his mistress eat my groceries is not logistics."

Noah's jaw tightened. "She's the new COO. We need to present a united front to the media."

I turned away from them and walked straight down the hallway to the master suite.

I pushed open the frosted glass doors of my walk-in closet.

A row of unfamiliar silk dresses hung on the left rack, squeezed right next to my tailored wool blazers. A pair of red suede pumps sat on the cedar shelf, pushing my winter boots to the side. The faint scent of gardenia perfume lingered in the air—the exact perfume Vanessa wore in the boardroom earlier today.

Noah appeared in the doorway, blocking the hall light.

"It's just for a few days," he said, his voice carrying a defensive edge. "She needs a place to change between media briefings. You're overreacting."

"I'm packing my pre-marital assets," I said, ignoring the intrusion of the dresses. I dropped to my knees, opened the floor safe, and punched in the six-digit code. I pulled out the velvet box containing my grandmother's sapphire necklace. I dropped it into my leather tote. Next went my prescription bottles from the vanity drawer.

Noah stepped further into the room, extending a crisp folder toward me. "Dad wants you to read this."

Press Release: Draft Version 4.

Claire Bennett steps down citing severe exhaustion. Recent financial discrepancies attributed to stress-induced judgment errors.

I read the lines twice. My fingers curled around the edge of the paper, crinkling the expensive stock.

"You scrubbed the Northstar acquisition from this draft," I said, looking up at my son.

Noah shifted his weight. "We have to protect the stock price. If the market finds out about the missing funds, we lose our institutional investors."

"Nine months ago, you, your father, and Vanessa bypassed my veto to buy a failing tech firm," I said, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "You created a forty-two million dollar deficit in the European fund. I wired eighteen point four million from my personal trust to keep the SEC from freezing your accounts."

"We're handling Northstar," Noah insisted, crossing his arms. "Dad is restructuring the debt."

"The three of you signed a ninety-day repayment and indemnity agreement," I reminded him. "You legally acknowledged the debt. You put it in writing. Now you want me to sign a press release saying I stole my own money?"

"It's just PR, Mom! It's not a legal confession."

"It is a public admission of guilt," I corrected him, tossing the folder onto the mattress. "If I sign that, Adrian can use it in the divorce proceedings to strip me of everything else."

I pulled out my phone and opened the banking app.

"What are you doing?" Noah asked, watching my thumbs move across the screen.

"Canceling the auto-pay," I said. I tapped the red delete icon next to the penthouse maintenance fee. Then the country club dues. Then the grocery delivery service.

"You're being petty," Noah muttered.

"I'm being financially responsible," I countered. I scrolled down to the family accounts and found Noah's platinum credit card. I hit cancel.

"If Vanessa is moving in, she can pay the monthly assessments."

Noah's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, reading the automated text alert. His face flushed bright red.

"You can't just cut off my card," Noah protested, stepping toward me. "I have client dinners this week. I have a car payment due on Friday."

"Expense them to your new COO," I said, sliding the phone back into my pocket. "Or ask your father to cover it from the accounts he's hiding in the Cayman Islands."

"I'm your son," Noah said, his voice cracking slightly.

"And you just voted to fire me," I replied, grabbing my tote bag from the floor. "You made your choice in the boardroom, Noah. You don't get to keep the corporate credit card after you stab the account holder in the back."

I walked out of the master suite and headed straight for the kitchen. I needed to grab my ceramic coffee mug—the one I used every morning, the one Adrian bought me in Rome five years ago before the lies started.

Vanessa leaned against the marble island. Her fingers were wrapped around the handle of my mug. She lifted it to her mouth, taking a slow sip of dark coffee.

"Put that down," I said, stopping in the center of the kitchen.

Vanessa lowered the cup, her lips curving into a practiced, media-ready smile. She traced the rim of the ceramic with her index finger.

"Are you looking for that indemnity agreement, Claire?" Vanessa asked, her voice echoing lightly against the tile walls. "Adrian had me shred it last night."
