After My Sister Married My Boyfriend, I Exposed Them Novel Cover

After My Sister Married My Boyfriend, I Exposed Them

Every Thanksgiving, she arrived early, peeled potatoes in the dark, and roasted the turkey while the radiator clanked and her sister Gloria slept. She never minded—that was the haunting part. She cooked, Karter posted photos, and Gloria basked in praise. Then her sister married her boyfriend, and the quiet woman who gave everything realized exposure was the only revenge left. A modern romance novel about betrayal, sacrifice, and the dangerous power of a woman pushed too far.

Chapter 2

I went back the next morning.

Winnie tried to stop me. She stood in her kitchen doorway with her arms crossed, still in yesterday's clothes, and said, "You don't have to do this yet."

"Yes I do."

"Hailey—"

"I need to see it again." I pulled on my coat. "I need to be sure."

She didn't ask what I meant. She just handed me her travel mug of coffee and made me promise to text her every hour.

The subway was crowded. I stood with my hand on the pole and my face blank and I practiced in my head. Not the words. The face. The posture. The version of myself they expected to see.

Small. Apologetic. Tired.

It wasn't hard. I'd been wearing her for years.

Atticus was in the kitchen when I let myself in. My kitchen. He'd made eggs. Two plates on the counter, like he'd known I was coming. Like he'd staged it.

He turned when he heard the door. His face did something complicated — surprise, then calculation, then concern settling over it like a mask pulled tight.

"Hailey." He set the spatula down. "I didn't think you'd—"

"I talked to Gloria."

Silence. He waited. I counted his breaths. Three. Four.

"And?"

I looked at the floor. Let my shoulders curve in. "I need time to process."

The relief that crossed his face was so naked it almost made me laugh. He crossed the kitchen in four steps and touched my arm, his palm warm through my sleeve, and his voice dropped into that register I used to think was intimacy.

"Babe. Of course. Take all the time you need."

Babe. He'd called me that for four years. I used to love it. Now I heard the script underneath, the word he'd use for anyone in this position. Interchangeable. Efficient.

His thumb moved on my arm, a small circle. Soothing. Practiced.

"I know this is hard," he said. "I know Gloria can be... intense. But she loves you. She wants what's best for everyone."

I looked up at him. His eyes were so earnest. So concerned. I watched a tiny muscle jump at the corner of his mouth, the only tell that he was working, performing, holding something tight behind his teeth.

"I just don't understand," I said quietly. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Tell you what?"

"About Karter."

His hand stilled. For half a second, something cold moved through his expression. Then it was gone, smoothed over, and he sighed like I was the one being unreasonable.

"There's nothing to tell. She has a crush. It's not my fault." He let go of my arm and turned back to the stove, and I saw it — the irritation in the set of his shoulders, the tightness in his jaw. "I've been trying to let her down easy. I didn't want to upset you."

The lie was so smooth. So automatic. I wondered how many times he'd practiced it. How many times he'd used some version of it on someone else.

"Okay," I said.

He glanced back. "Okay?"

"I believe you."

The smile that broke across his face was so relieved, so boyish, that I felt something in my chest turn to stone. He pulled me into a hug, his chin on top of my head, and I stood there with my arms at my sides and breathed in the cologne I used to bury my face in.

It smelled like nothing now. Just chemicals.

"I love you," he said into my hair.

I closed my eyes. "I know."

He left for work an hour later. Kissed my forehead. Told me to rest. I waited until I heard the elevator doors close, then I opened my laptop and started searching.

Corporate filings. Business registrations. Tax records. Everything Winnie had taught me to look for in the gray hours of the morning.

I didn't find it right away. It took three hours and two pots of coffee and a database I had to pay twelve dollars to access. But there it was, buried in a PDF dated six weeks ago.

Atticus Lawson, registered CEO and legal representative.

The company name meant nothing to me. I copied it into a new search.

Fifteen minutes later, I was staring at a notice of default. Unpaid creditors. Pending litigation. The words blurred together but the number at the bottom was very clear.

Twelve million dollars.

I sat back. The radiator knocked. Somewhere in the building, someone's dog barked.

I thought about Dana Carr. The woman Atticus mentioned sometimes, his boss, the one who was "finally seeing his potential." I thought about the timing. The promotion. The private lunch he'd mentioned last week, the one that made him so excited he couldn't sit still.

I opened a new tab and started searching her name.

My phone buzzed. Atticus.

*Lunch with Dana. Big news. Tell you tonight. Love you.*

I stared at the message. Then I looked back at the screen, at the debt notice, at the filing date, at the careful architecture of someone else's trap closing around a man too vain to see it.

And I started to smile.
