Chapter 4

The Lycan training ground was nothing like Silverfang's practice fields.

No pack house looming in the background. No warriors watching from the sidelines. Just a warded clearing deep in neutral forest, ringed by ancient trees and silence so thick it felt like pressure against my eardrums.

Vincent stood at the center, already shifted. His Lycan wolf form was massive — easily twice the size of any pack wolf I'd ever seen. Dark fur, winter-smoke scent rolling off him in waves, and eyes that tracked my every movement with unnerving precision.

"You need to move," he'd said an hour ago, human-form and matter-of-fact. "Bond severance erodes combat instincts. Your body's forgetting how to fight."

I'd wanted to argue. I didn't, because he was right and I hated him for it.

Now I circled him in human form, blades in both hands, breathing hard. He'd been testing me for twenty minutes — feints, rushes, calculated pressure that forced me to react faster than thought.

My muscles burned. Sweat ran down my spine. The hollow scar on my neck throbbed with each heartbeat.

Vincent lunged.

I dropped low, rolled left, came up with my blade angled for his shoulder — a move I'd drilled a thousand times. He twisted mid-strike, impossibly fast, and his massive paw swept toward my ribs.

I should have been hit.

Instead, something inside me shifted.

My vision sharpened. The world slowed. I saw the trajectory of his strike three seconds before impact and my body moved — not with human reflex, but with something faster, deeper, older.

I wasn't just dodging. I was reading him.

Silver light flashed across my vision. My bones sang. For three perfect seconds, I moved like a wolf in human skin.

Then Vincent stopped.

He shifted back to human form so fast I barely registered the transition. One moment, massive Lycan wolf. The next, a man standing five feet away, watching me with an expression I couldn't read.

"What did you feel?" he asked.

I straightened slowly. My pulse was racing. My hands were steady. "Nothing."

"Liar."

I met his eyes. "I felt nothing."

Vincent took three steps forward. Not close. Not far. Exactly the distance that made the air between us feel charged. "Your eyes flashed silver. Your reflexes moved past human-form limits. Your wolf surfaced."

"My wolf is dormant."

"Your wolf," Vincent said quietly, "is waking up. And you know it."

I opened my mouth to argue. Stopped. Because he was right, and lying about it was pointless when he'd just watched it happen.

I looked away. "It doesn't mean anything."

"It means everything."

"It means I'm broken in a new way," I snapped. "A wolf that only shows up when I'm getting my ass kicked in a sparring match is not a functional wolf, Vincent."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "You dropped your left shoulder."

I blinked. "What?"

"Just now. When you came up from the roll. You dropped your left shoulder and telegraphed your strike angle." His voice was calm. Exact. Infuriating. "You corrected it mid-movement, but the initial tell was there."

I stared at him. "Are you seriously critiquing my form right now?"

"I'm telling you what I saw."

"What you saw," I said slowly, "was me moving faster than I should have been able to move, and your priority observation is my shoulder angle?"

Vincent's mouth twitched. Not quite a smile. Close. "Your shoulder angle is why you're still alive. If you hadn't corrected it, I would have landed that strike."

"You stopped the strike."

"Because you corrected it."

We stared at each other. The cedar-and-smoke scent wrapped tighter. My wolf stirred again — not surfacing, just present, awake, listening.

I realized I was smiling. Small. Involuntary. The kind of smile that came from being matched by someone who refused to let me settle for adequate when I was capable of more.

Vincent noticed. His eyes tracked the shift in my expression. He didn't comment.

But something in his posture eased. Just slightly.

I looked away first. "I need water."

"There's a spring near the shelter."

I turned and walked toward it, my legs shaking from exertion, my pulse still racing. Behind me, I heard Vincent shift back into Lycan form and begin running the perimeter — a patrol instinct he probably wasn't even aware of.

I didn't look back.

---

That night, Sera and I sat outside the training ground's shelter. The fire burned low between us. Above, stars scattered across a sky so clear it hurt to look at.

Sera poked at the coals with a stick. "Are you going to let him court you?"

I didn't pretend not to know who she meant. "No."

"Why not?"

I was quiet for a long time. The scar on my neck pulsed warm — not cold, not hollow, just warm in a way that felt dangerous.

"The last bond I trusted was used as a leash," I said finally. "Every time I feel the pull toward Vincent, it feels like the beginning of another one."

Sera looked at me. Her face was serious in the firelight. "The leash and the bond aren't the same thing."

"How would you know? You've never had a mate bond."

"Exactly," she said. "So I can see it without all the fear in the way." She paused. "What I saw today wasn't a wolf who wanted to control you. It was a wolf who stopped the spar the moment you needed him to."

I didn't answer.

Sera went back to poking the fire. I stared at the stars.

The warmth in my scar spread slowly down my spine. My wolf was quiet. Not gone. Just waiting.

I didn't write anything in my journal that night.

---

The intelligence came in pieces over the next three days.

I worked my network the way I'd learned during border patrol rotations — quiet questions, careful listening, favors traded with low-rank wolves and displaced she-wolves who remembered when I'd organized combat drills for the warriors Silverfang's Gamma ignored.

Sera helped. She had contacts in places I didn't, wolves who trusted her because she had nothing and therefore nothing to gain by lying.

The picture that emerged made my blood run cold.

Kayleigh Gomez carried two partial marks. One from Tristan. One from Paul Chapman, Alpha of Ironveil Pack.

Two Alphas. Two packs. A double-bond violation so serious it carried automatic exile under pack law.

I sat in the shelter with my journal open, writing down every detail. Source names. Dates. Corroborating scent reports from wolves who'd been present at Ironveil gatherings and smelled both marks on her skin.

The stalemate made sense now. Neither man would expose the arrangement without exposing himself. They were locked in mutual complicity.

I was the variable Kayleigh hadn't accounted for.

I closed the journal slowly. My hand was steady. My wolf was awake.

Outside, Vincent's Lycan form moved through the trees on patrol. I could hear the rhythm of his steps, steady and sure.

I looked down at the evidence in my lap. Then I stood, walked to the door, and called his name.

He stopped. Shifted. Walked back in human form.

"I need to go to Ironveil," I said.

Vincent looked at me. Then at the journal in my hand.

"Show me," he said quietly.

I did.
