Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I know because I checked my phone when the first wave hit — a cold twist low in my gut that made me stop mid-step on the pack house stairs. My wolf stirred once, uneasy, then went quiet in a way that felt wrong.

I'd come back early from border patrol. The perimeter was clean, the report half-written in my leather journal, and I still had mud on my boots. I should have gone straight to the barracks to file it. Instead, I followed the scent.

Tristan's Alpha musk threaded through the corridor air, familiar and strong. But underneath it — layered over it — was something else. Floral. Foreign. Wrong.

I stopped outside his bedroom door. It was open.

Kayleigh Gomez sat at the edge of Tristan's bed, barefoot, her hair loose over one shoulder. She looked at me without flinching. No guilt. No surprise. Just a slow, deliberate assessment, like she was deciding whether I was worth acknowledging.

Tristan stood by the window, pulling on a shirt. When he saw me, his expression wasn't shame. It was irritation.

"You're back early," he said.

My hand went to the base of my neck. The place where a mate mark should have been and never was. My wolf stirred again — a single, strangled sound deep inside my chest — then retreated into silence.

I didn't say anything. I turned and walked out.

Behind me, I heard Kayleigh laugh. Soft. Amused.

I kept walking.

---

That evening, the Pack Banquet filled the great hall with ranked wolves and the smell of roasted meat. I stood near the back, still in my patrol gear, because I hadn't trusted myself to go back to my quarters. The hollow ache at the base of my neck had spread into my chest, cold and insistent.

Tristan entered last, as Alphas do. Kayleigh walked three steps behind him, dressed in Silverfang colors she had no right to wear.

The room went quiet.

Tristan stepped to the head of the hall. His voice carried easily — Alpha tone threaded through every word, designed to compel attention and agreement.

"I, Tristan Knight, Alpha of Silverfang Pack, reject you, Hadley Reed, as my mate."

The half-bond cracked.

It felt like silver burning through bone. My wolf howled — a sound only I could hear — and then she was gone. Not sleeping. Gone. The space where she had lived went silent and empty, and the cold at my neck turned into a scar I could feel forming in real time.

I didn't kneel. I didn't cry. I didn't collapse.

I held Tristan's gaze. He stared back, waiting for me to break.

Kayleigh stood at the edge of the room, her expression carefully composed. A few wolves lowered their eyes. Most just stared.

I turned my back on the hall and walked toward the doors.

No one followed.

---

The boundary line hit me harder than I expected.

The residual bond thread pulled taut as I crossed the Silverfang territory marker — a physical wrench that nearly dropped me to one knee. My vision blurred. My chest seized. For three seconds I couldn't breathe.

Then I straightened, absorbed it, and kept moving.

Behind me, silence. No one called my name. No one came after me.

I carried my leather journal, my patrol blades, and three years of misplaced loyalty. The hollow scar at my neck throbbed with cold. I pulled my collar higher and didn't look back.

---

The neutral-ground lodge sat just outside the human town, a waypoint between territories where wolves without affiliation could shelter legally. The common room smelled like old wood and weak coffee. A few transient wolves glanced up when I entered, then looked away fast.

I chose a corner table, set my blades down, and started sharpening them.

It was a nightly ritual. Muscle memory. The scrape of steel on whetstone steadied my breathing and gave my hands something to do that wasn't shaking.

Across the room, a low-ranked she-wolf watched me. She was young — maybe nineteen — with tangled hair and a jacket two sizes too big. Her scent was faint, suppressed, like she'd been living rough for a while.

She stared at me like I was doing something impossible.

I looked up. "You know how to hold a knife?"

She blinked. "No."

"Come sit down."

She hesitated, then crossed the room and dropped into the chair across from me. Up close, I could see the hollowness in her face — hunger, maybe, or exhaustion. Probably both.

I handed her one of my smaller blades. "Hold it like this. Edge out. Thumb on the spine."

She adjusted her grip, clumsy but focused.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"Sera. Sera Finch."

"Where's your pack?"

Her jaw tightened. "Don't have one anymore."

I nodded. I didn't ask why. It didn't matter.

We sat in silence for a while, the scrape of steel the only sound between us. Sera's hands were shaking, but she kept her grip steady.

Finally, she looked up. "Why aren't you crying?"

I paused mid-stroke. "What?"

"You got rejected tonight. I can smell it on you. The broken bond. Most she-wolves — " She stopped, like she'd said too much.

"Most she-wolves what?"

Sera swallowed. "Most she-wolves don't sharpen knives after."

I looked at her for a long moment. Then I went back to my blade.

"Most she-wolves aren't me."

Sera smiled — small, but real. She went back to practicing her grip.

Outside, the wind picked up. Somewhere in the distance, a wolf howled. Not mine. Mine was still silent.

But I was still here. Still moving. Still holding steel.

That was enough for now.
