Chapter 3

Hudson caught me in the corridor outside the kitchen on the sixth morning.

I was carrying a tray of clean mugs. He stepped into my path with the easy authority of a man who had never once considered that a doorway might not belong to him. His scent hit me first—cedar and winter rain, still familiar enough to make something in my chest pull tight before it remembered to stop.

"Saoirse." His voice was warm. Careful. The Alpha tone softened at the edges the way it used to be in my quarters at night, back when I still believed the softness meant something. "Can we talk?"

I set the tray on the narrow table by the wall. I did not look at him yet. I counted the mugs—twelve—and made sure they were aligned in two even rows. Then I turned.

"About what?"

He smiled. It was a small smile, the kind meant to invite me into a shared understanding. "I think it might be time for you to consider leaving Ironveil. Quietly. With dignity."

I blinked. Once. My wolf, still silent in the dark behind my ribs, leaned forward.

"Dignity," I repeated.

"I'll provide a letter of introduction to a neighboring pack. Crescent Ridge, maybe. They're always looking for—" He paused, recalibrating. "—capable wolves. You could start fresh. No history. No... complications."

The word *complications* sat in the air between us like something he had dropped and was waiting for me to pick up. I did not pick it up.

"Part as packmates," he added. His thumb pressed against the inside of his wrist. The tell. He was running numbers even now, calculating how much this conversation was costing him and what the return might be. "That's the cleanest way."

I looked at him for a long moment. The corridor was narrow. Morning light slanted through the high window behind him and turned the dust in the air to gold. He looked good in it. He always had. That was part of the problem.

"Hudson," I said. My voice was quiet. Not soft. Quiet. "Do you know how much Beta Darwin has taken from pack training funds over the past two years?"

His smile faltered. Not all the way. Just enough that I saw the shape of the question land.

"What?"

"Training funds," I said. "The allocation that goes to warrior equipment, patrol provisions, the quarterly drills. Do you know how much of it actually reaches the warriors?"

His hand dropped from his wrist. His eyes sharpened. "Why are you asking me that?"

"Because I think you should know," I said. "Before you write me a letter of introduction. Before we part as packmates."

I picked up the tray. I walked past him. His scent followed me three steps down the corridor, then fell away.

Behind me, I heard him say my name once. I did not turn around.

Inside my chest, my wolf pressed forward another inch. Still silent. Still watching.

*Not yet,* I told her.

But the air in the corridor tasted different now. Like something that had been waiting a long time to shift.

---

Five hundred miles north, in quarters I had never seen, Caelan Ashford sat at a desk made of dark wood and opened a notebook so worn the spine had gone soft.

I did not know this yet. I would not know it for days. But later—much later—he would tell me what happened in that room, and I would understand that this was the moment the architecture began to lock into place.

He spread the anonymous intelligence brief flat beside the notebook. Seven pages of small, dense handwriting. No name. No rank. No request.

He read it twice.

Then he opened the notebook to a page dated six weeks prior—a rogue movement log he had been keeping since he was sixteen, entries in handwriting so compact it looked like code. He found the first gap. A patrol route along the eastern ridge that should have intersected a known crossing point and had come back reporting nothing. He had marked it with a question in red ink.

The brief's second page gave him the answer. The crossing had happened. The patrol had been four hours late to the route. The brief included the estimated pack size—eleven, not the six his official report had guessed—and a note that the route gap matched a supply delay three packs west.

Caelan closed the notebook. He looked at the brief for a long moment.

Then he found the second gap. And the third. Both matched. Both corrected.

He sat back in his chair. The room was silent except for the low crackle of a fire in the grate. Outside the window, the Lycan Court's northern wing glowed pale in the late afternoon light.

He reached for a secure handset—the kind used for intelligence channels that did not go through official pack lines—and opened a reply on the frequency the brief had arrived through.

He wrote two words.

*Who are you?*

He sent it. Then he waited.

---

I read his reply at four in the morning.

The handset buzzed once under the floorboard. I pulled it out, read the message in the dark, and felt something in my chest unlock that I had not known was holding itself closed.

He had read it. He had replied. He was listening.

I did not answer the question. Not directly. I had spent three years learning what information was worth and what it cost to give it away too soon. Instead, I opened a blank page and began writing.

This brief was smaller. More targeted. Three specific rogue crossing points his Court patrols had missed in the last six weeks. I included the dates, the estimated pack sizes, the terrain features that made each crossing viable. I cross-referenced them against supply delays I had tracked through kitchen inventory reports and courier schedules no one thought an Omega would notice.

At the bottom, I wrote: *Someone who has been watching from a position no one thought worth watching.*

I fed it into the channel. I put the handset back under the floorboard. I sat on the floor with my back against the wall and waited for my hands to stop shaking.

They did not stop.

The reply came six hours later, while I was scrubbing the mess hall floor.

Two words.

*I'm listening.*

I read them three times. Then I closed the handset, slipped it into my pocket, and went back to scrubbing.

Across the hall, Rowan Callahan was stacking chairs. He glanced at me once, his brown eyes careful, and did not ask.

I kept scrubbing.

Inside my chest, my wolf rose to her feet for the first time since the bonfire. She did not howl. She did not need to.

She was awake.
