Chapter 1

The bond snapped at 9:47 on a Saturday night, and I heard it before I felt it — a soft internal click, like a door closing in an empty house.

I was standing at the pack house window when it happened, waiting for Brayden. The dress I'd chosen — deep green, long sleeves, high enough at the collar to hide the faint outline of his old scent-mark — clung damp to my back from nerves. Rain streaked the glass in long silver lines. The Autumn Mate Ceremony started in thirteen minutes. He'd promised to escort me.

He was crossing the courtyard instead, in wolf form. Broad shoulders, dark pelt, that limp in his left hind leg from a rogue skirmish I'd stitched up myself two winters ago.

He wasn't alone.

Dakota Ferguson trotted beside him — smaller, silver-furred, tail high. Brayden's wolf flanked her the way an Alpha flanks a mate. Protective. Claimed. When the wind shifted, I caught it through the cracked pane: his scent, cedar and gunmetal, threaded through hers like they'd been layered together for hours.

My chest went cold in a way that had nothing to do with the storm.

I told myself I was misreading. I told myself six years meant something. I pressed my palm flat against the glass and watched them disappear toward the ceremony hall, and my mate mark — that faint, unfinished thing at the base of my neck — throbbed once, hard, like it was trying to warn me.

I walked to the ceremony alone.

The hall smelled of pine sap and wet fur and too many bodies. The whole pack had assembled — deltas in ceremonial leathers, elders in the front rows, warriors along the walls. They parted for me the way water parts for a stone. Not deference. Curiosity. I saw Melanie near the platform, her Gamma sash slightly askew, her face doing something I'd never seen it do before. Her mouth was open like she wanted to warn me and couldn't find the word fast enough.

Brayden stood on the platform in human form now, dark suit, hair still damp. Dakota stood beside him in white. Her father's silver sigil gleamed at her throat.

I understood before he spoke. My legs kept walking anyway.

"Natalia." His voice carried the Alpha tone, flat and formal. He would not meet my eyes. "Come forward."

I came forward. Six years of habit does that.

"I, Brayden Cole, Alpha of Ironridge —"

My mark went hot.

"— reject you, Natalia Ashford —"

The heat became a burn. White-hot. A needle of silver driven through the base of my skull.

"— as my mate."

The bond severed on the last word. I felt it the way you feel a bone break in someone else's body — distant at first, then everywhere. The mark on my neck went cold. Not cool. *Cold.* Hollow. A frost-bitten pit where warmth had lived for six years, empty as a room after the lights go out.

My knees hit the floor.

A supernatural shockwave rolled through the pack bond — I felt every wolf in the room flinch with me. Someone gasped. An elder swore. Brayden did not look at me. He turned to Dakota, lowered his head, and set his teeth to the curve of her neck. She made a soft sound of pleasure. His scent flared and mingled with hers and I could smell it from the floor.

I didn't cry. I couldn't. My lungs had forgotten the sequence.

A hand closed on my upper arm — thin fingers, ringed, familiar. Brayden's mother. Marlene Cole had waited six years for this exact grip.

"Get up." She was already dragging me toward the doors. "You will be off pack grounds by dawn. You take what you can carry. Nothing that was bought with pack funds — nothing. Do you understand me, Omega?"

Omega. She had never called me that to my face before.

And something inside me — something I had spent six years pressing down small enough to fit inside the shape of what Brayden could tolerate — *cracked.*

It wasn't rage. It was recognition. Like a lock turning after a lifetime of being tried with the wrong key.

My skin went hot. Marlene's fingers spasmed on my arm. I heard her hiss — smelled the burn — and then the world tilted sideways and *up* and my bones were rearranging themselves into something that had been waiting a very long time to be let out.

White fur. Enormous. I felt my own weight for the first time and it was *magnificent.*

The aura hit the room before I did.

Every wolf within thirty feet dropped. Marlene fell backward, hand cradled to her chest. The elders' knees folded. Warriors collapsed against the walls with their throats bared. On the platform, Brayden staggered — his mother's proud son, Ironridge's Alpha — and his knees hit the wood, his own wolf whimpering audibly inside him, and Dakota shrieked and dropped beside him with her face pressed to the floor.

He finally looked at me.

His eyes were wide. Wet. Terrified.

My wolf — mine, I understood suddenly, *mine* — bared her teeth at him. A sound came out of my chest that I had never made in twenty-four years of being small.

Somewhere in the crowd, Marlene found her voice: "It's a trick — it's a *trick*, don't any of you dare —"

No one was listening to her. Every wolf in that room had felt it. Royal blood. Lost blood.

I turned and ran.

I did not know these legs yet. I did not know this body. But the doors were open and the storm was black and the forest was *there,* and I ran into it before anyone could rise, white fur streaking through the rain, the ceremony hall shrinking behind me until it was just a lit rectangle in the dark.

Somewhere behind me, I heard Melanie shout my name.

I ran until the trees swallowed the sound.

The cabin found me before I found it — an old border shelter, half-collapsed roof, the smell of cedar and dust. I shifted back inside it and the human shape came slower than the wolf had, uncertain, my knees giving out on the wooden floor. I was naked. Shaking. The cold hollow on my neck throbbed where the mark had been.

*Little sister.*

The voice came from inside my chest. Female. Grief-worn. Old.

*I've been waiting a long time.*

I pressed both hands to my mouth and did not scream.

I don't know how long I sat there before I heard footsteps — running, sure-footed, following a scent trail only a Gamma would trust in this rain. The door banged open.

Melanie stood in the frame, soaked to the skin, her sash gone, a jacket bundled under one arm and murder in her eyes.

"Oh, honey." She was already crossing the room, wrapping the jacket around me, her hands warm on my shoulders. "Oh, *honey.*"

She was crying. I wasn't. I couldn't remember how.

"Eat this." A protein bar shoved into my hand. "Breathe. In. Out. Again. Nat — Nat, look at me."

I looked at her. Her jaw was set.

"We have until dawn," she said. "Until Ironridge figures out what just walked out of that hall. Marlene is already screaming trick, but nobody with a functioning nose believes her. Brayden hasn't moved off his knees. The elders are going to have to convene. If we're smart — if we're *fast* — we can be somewhere with witnesses before they can lock the borders."

My wolf stirred inside me, low and certain. *Yes.*

The hollow on my neck still ached. I touched it once, briefly, and lowered my hand.

"Melanie." My voice came out level. It surprised me. "That history lesson we had — the one on old Lycan law. Sanctuary rights. There was a passage."

Her eyes sharpened. "You remember it?"

"Not all of it. Enough." I pulled the jacket tighter around my shoulders. "Get me the text. Before dawn."

She was already reaching for her phone. "On it."

I turned toward the cracked window. Somewhere out in the black rain, Ironridge was still on its knees. Somewhere, Brayden was standing up.

*Then we don't waste the night.*
