Chapter 4

For three days, I played the part of the devoted, broken Luna.

I signed supply requisitions. I checked the winter grain stores. I walked the halls with my head level and my bandaged hands folded neatly before me. I didn't cry. I didn't demand explanations.

My silence unnerved Reed.

He was used to tears, pleas, and frantic attempts to earn his approval. A predator like Reed understood weakness, but my quiet compliance offered him nothing to grasp. When I passed him in the corridor, I felt his sharp gaze tracking my shoulders, searching for the fracture.

He couldn't find one, and that terrified him.

Through the frosted glass of his office, I watched him summon Damon Voss. By twilight, three couriers on motorcycles roared out through the main iron gates. Reed had drafted formal invitations to the Alphas of our three neighboring packs—Stonehaven, Greymist, and Duskfall.

The public story was already spreading: a grand Mark Ceremony to "renew our sacred bond" after the tragic interruption at my mother’s memorial. He called it a romantic reconciliation. In truth, it was a trap. He wanted to re-mark my neck before three allied packs, legally binding my bloodline to Ironveil forever.

That night, Reed came to our quarters.

He didn't knock. He walked in with his hands in his pockets, wearing that easy, boyish smile he used whenever he wanted to sell a lie.

"Kaia," he said softly, sitting on the edge of the bed. "I’ve been thinking about what happened at the Moon Rite. It wasn't right. You didn't deserve that embarrassment."

I set my ledger aside and looked at him. My face was completely blank. "No, I didn't."

"I want to make it right," he said, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers were warm, but to me, they felt like dry ice. "I’ve invited the allied Alphas. Tomorrow night, under the full moon, we’ll hold a renewal ceremony. I’m going to bite you again, Kaia. A complete mark. It will show the whole territory that you are my true Luna, once and for all."

He searched my eyes, waiting for gratitude.

"That’s very generous of you, Reed," I said, keeping my voice mild and obedient. "Thank you."

His chest expanded with relief. He believed he had won. "Rest up, sweetheart. Tomorrow is a big day."

He leaned down, pressed a kiss to my forehead, and walked out.

The moment the lock clicked, I sat motionless. I counted three minutes by the steady ticking of the wall clock.

Then I went to my desk, booted the radio transceiver, and typed a single line to Blackthorn Court:

*The Mark Ceremony is the site. Date confirmed. Everything must converge there.*

I shut the transmitter and reached into my pocket, pulling out a small glass vial Petra had slipped me earlier that afternoon. Inside was a dried mixture of crushed silverleaf and musk-thistle—a scent-masking herb traded in back alleys.

I unstoppered the vial and held it to my nose.

The sharp, resinous bite was identical to the trace note I had caught beneath Camilla’s perfume on Reed’s skin. It was the exact chemical he had used to fake a bond scent with her, tricking her wolf into believing they were fated.

I labeled the vial, slid it into my mother’s iron lockbox with the rest of the evidence, and locked it tight. Reed wanted to sink his fangs into my throat tomorrow night.

I intended to be standing when he tried.

The next afternoon, Reed brought in his newest prop.

I was walking past the back courtyard near the lower armory when I heard a faint, high-pitched whimper. Huddled against the damp stone wall was a runt omega pup, barely eight weeks old. His dull brown coat was matted with dirt, and his ribs showed sharply beneath his skin.

A guard leaned against the fence, smoking a cigarette. "Alpha bought him from a border trader this morning," the guard muttered. "Orders are to put him at the base of the ceremonial platform tonight. Make the Luna look motherly for the guest Alphas."

Optics. Everything with Reed was optics.

I walked into the courtyard and dropped into a crouch a few feet from the shivering pup. He flinched, curling his tail tight against his belly.

Slowly, I extended my right hand, palm up, revealing the white medical gauze and black stitches across my skin.

The pup hesitated. His nose twitched, catching my scent. He took one timid step forward, then another. Finally, he pressed his cold, wet snout against the bandage and leaned his small forehead into my palm, letting out a trembling sigh.

I didn't pick him up. I didn't offer empty cooing. I just sat with him on the freezing stones for five minutes, letting my warmth seep into his small body.

When I stood to leave, I left the courtyard door unlatched just enough for a pup to slip through into the heated hallway.

Night fell over Ironveil like a dark shroud.

Hours before the ceremony, the radio transceiver blinked green on my desk. Grantham’s final operational brief scrolled onto the tiny screen:

*All intelligence teams stationed along Ironveil borders. Embezzlement ledgers and forensic wolfsbane autopsy entered into Blackthorn Court pack law record. Evidence certified for Lycan Council tribunal. Copies dispatched to Stonehaven, Greymist, and Duskfall Alphas upon formal challenge.*

Then, at the very bottom, separated by a clean space, was a single sentence:

*The border routes were not why I came.*

I read the words once. Then twice. A third time.

A sudden, phantom scent brushed the back of my throat—fresh cedar and crisp winter rain, clean and sharp against the stagnant air of my room.

I didn't reply. I folded the printed sheet, laid it inside my mother's iron box, and snapped the brass latch shut.

Beneath my ribs, my silver-white wolf didn't pace. She didn't howl. She sat back on her massive haunches, gathered and still, staring into the dark.

Ready.
