Chapter 2

The border patrol found me at first light.

I had walked through the night. Buster kept pace at my heels, quiet as a shadow, and the journal pressed against my ribs under my dress like a second heartbeat. The forest thinned as we crossed into Lycan territory — the trees taller, the underbrush cleaner, the air carrying a weight that had nothing to do with weather.

Two guards stepped out from the tree line. Tall. Armed. Their wolves close enough to the surface that I could see the faint glow in their eyes.

"State your business," the first one said. His tone was neutral, but his hand stayed near the blade at his hip.

I straightened. My legs ached. The cold mark on my neck throbbed with every pulse. I made my voice do what I needed it to do.

"I am Luna Amora Montgomery of Ironveil Pack," I said. The title tasted strange in my mouth after last night, but it was technically accurate. A rejection required Council adjudication to finalize. Until then, I still held the rank. "I invoke my rights under the Luna Accord. I request an audience with Lycan Prince Caelan Ashford to present evidence of treaty violations and formally demand a Lycan Council tribunal."

The guards stared at me.

I didn't blame them. I could feel what I looked like: bond-burned, exhausted, dressed in silk that had been dragged through a cellar passage, with a golden retriever and a leather journal. Refugees came to borders begging for sanctuary. They didn't arrive with legal terminology and dossiers.

The second guard — older, with a scar across his jaw — studied me for a long moment. Then he nodded once.

"Come with us."

They didn't ask questions. They flanked me, not like captors but like an escort, and led me through the forest toward the Lycan seat. Buster pressed close to my leg. I kept my hand on his head and counted my breaths.

By the time we reached the council chamber, the sun had cleared the horizon.

---

The room was stone. No tapestries. No ornament. Just clean lines, high ceilings, and a long table that looked like it had been carved from a single piece of granite. A space built for judgment, not comfort.

Lycan Prince Caelan Ashford stood at the far end.

I had seen him before — at territorial summits, alliance signings, the kind of formal events where Alphas postured and Lunas smiled. He had always been composed. Precise. The kind of authority that didn't need to announce itself.

Up close, in this room, that quality intensified. He was tall, dark-haired, with eyes that registered everything and gave back nothing. He didn't greet me. He simply gestured to the chair across from him.

I sat. Buster settled at my feet.

"You invoked the Luna Accord," Caelan said. His voice was measured. No warmth, no coldness. Just fact.

"I did."

"Explain."

I opened the journal and laid it on the table between us.

"For three years, I served as Luna of Ironveil Pack," I said. "I rebuilt the pack's alliances. I organized the training rotations. I managed the supply lines. During that time, Alpha Jameson Baker systematically poisoned me with wolfsbane to suppress my wolf and prevent conception. Last night, he publicly rejected me and installed a rogue she-wolf named Daisy Olson as Luna without Council approval. This constitutes a violation of the Ironveil-Lycan territorial treaty, which prohibits unregistered rogues on pack lands without notification to the Lycan Council."

I slid the first document across the table. The wolfsbane analysis from the border-pack healer.

"This confirms trace wolfsbane in the supplement I was given daily for thirty-eight months. The bitterness was masked with honey. The kitchen Omega who administered it — Petra — believed it was a prescribed fertility aid."

I placed the second document. The dosing timeline.

"I documented every dose I could verify. Dates. Amounts. The escalation pattern matches a suppression protocol designed to weaken a wolf without triggering immediate collapse."

The third document. The transcript.

"On October third, I overheard a conversation between Jameson and Daisy through the study door. They discussed escalating the dose in the fall to trigger what would present as a natural bond collapse. I recorded it."

I set the small recorder on the table. Caelan's eyes flicked to it, then back to me.

"The supply requisitions," I continued, sliding the final pages forward, "prove the wolfsbane was sourced through a rogue contact in the Ozarks. The same contact who has been sheltering Daisy's five-year-old daughter — Jameson's daughter — for the past four years."

I stopped. My hands were steady on the table. The cold mark on my neck pulsed.

Caelan leaned forward slightly. He picked up the transcript and read it in silence. Then the requisition logs. Then the healer's analysis. His face gave nothing away, but the quality of his stillness changed. It sharpened.

"You have documentation for all of this," he said.

It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

"And you kept it hidden for how long?"

"Fourteen months."

His gaze lifted to mine. For the first time, something flickered in his expression — not surprise, but a kind of cold respect.

"Why didn't you run sooner?"

"Because I needed the evidence to be complete," I said. "And because running without leverage would have made me a rogue. This way, I'm a Luna invoking legal rights."

The silence held.

Then Caelan set the papers down, aligned them precisely, and spoke.

"I will convene the tribunal."

Relief hit me so hard I had to lock my knees to stay upright in the chair.

"The jurisdictional claim is legitimate," he continued. "The evidence is sufficient to compel Alpha Baker's appearance before the Lycan Council. You will remain on Lycan territory as a protected witness until the tribunal convenes. That is not negotiable."

"Understood."

He stood. I stood with him. As I turned toward the door, something brushed the edge of my awareness — a scent, faint but persistent. Cedar and rain. Clean and steady, like the forest after a storm.

I paused.

It wasn't the room. It was him.

I filed it away. I didn't understand it yet. I had too many other things to survive first.

Caelan's voice followed me to the threshold.

"Luna Montgomery."

I turned.

"You did not come here to beg," he said quietly. "That was the right choice."

I met his eyes. For the first time since the bond broke, something in my chest that wasn't the mark or the wolf unclenched just slightly.

"Thank you," I said.

Then I walked out, Buster at my heels, and let the door close behind me.
