Chapter 3

The room was smaller than I remembered.

Not the recovery ward. My new room. Caleb had moved my things while I was healing—clothes folded in a narrow dresser, books stacked on a single shelf. The window faced the service courtyard instead of the forest. No one had announced the demotion. They didn't need to.

Caleb sat across from me at the small table, a folder open between us. Late afternoon light slanted through the window, catching dust motes in the air. He looked tired. Concerned. The perfect image of a mate carrying an impossible burden.

"I've been thinking about this for weeks," he said quietly. His fingers rested on the document, not quite touching it. "Watching you suffer. Knowing I can't fix what happened to you."

I kept my eyes down. Let my shoulders curve inward slightly.

"You deserve better than this, Lillian." His voice dropped, rough with manufactured emotion. "Better than a bond that only brings you pain. Better than a pack where you can't even sense danger coming."

He slid the document toward me.

Luna Renunciation. The words were printed across the top in formal script.

"This would free you," Caleb continued. "No more bond pulling at you. No more expectations you can't meet. You could go somewhere safe. Somewhere quiet. I'd make sure you were provided for."

I picked up the document with hands that trembled just enough. Started reading.

The language was dense, formal. Legal architecture dressed up as mercy. I tracked each clause with my restored comprehension, the wolf-senses Caleb thought were dead.

Section Three: Territory Rights Forfeiture. Upon signing, the Luna relinquishes all claims to pack lands, hunting grounds, and associated properties.

Section Five: Bond Dissolution. The mate bond shall be considered void, with no residual claim to Alpha protection or pack resources.

Section Seven: Beneficiary Designation. In the event of the former Luna's death or permanent absence, all transferred assets revert to—

Cheyenne Rivera.

There it was. Buried in subsection C, phrased in careful legal language that most wolves would skim past. If I signed this and left, everything I'd brought to the bond—my father's trust, my mother's bloodline connections, the eastern territory that came through my family—would transfer to Caleb. And when I died, it would go to her.

Not if I died. When.

Because they were planning to make sure of it.

I looked up at Caleb. Let my eyes fill with confused tears.

"I don't understand all of this," I whispered.

His expression softened. He reached across the table, covering my hand with his. "You don't need to understand every detail. Just know that I'm trying to help you. That I want what's best for you, even if it means letting you go."

The mate bond—corrupted, fractured, barely functional—transmitted nothing. He'd worn it down to static over two years of wolfsbane and betrayal. He couldn't feel my wolf anymore. Couldn't sense the cold, precise rage coiled behind my ribs.

I pulled my hand back slowly. Picked up the pen.

"Where do I sign?"

Relief flickered across his face, quickly masked. "Bottom of page seven. And page twelve, where it's initialed."

I turned to page seven. The signature line waited, blank and final. I pressed the pen to paper.

My hand shook. Not from fear. From the effort of keeping my wolf clamped down while I played this role one more time.

I signed a name. Lillian Barnes Elliott. The letters were unsteady, childlike.

It was the decoy copy I'd prepared three days ago with Dr. Thorne. Identical layout. Identical formatting. Different legal language in six key sections. This version protected my assets, voided nothing, and would be rejected by any tribunal as improperly executed.

The real document—the one Caleb had just presented—was already memorized. Every clause. Every subsection. Every piece of evidence I would need.

I slid the signed decoy across the table.

Caleb picked it up without examining it. He'd never needed to verify my compliance before. He simply folded it, tucked it into the folder, and stood.

"Thank you," he said quietly. "I know this wasn't easy."

He left.

I sat alone in the smaller room, staring at the empty chair across from me. My hands were steady now. The trembling had been performance. Everything was performance.

Outside the window, the service courtyard was busy with evening routines. Pack members moved past, laughing, talking. None of them looked up.

I had just signed away nothing. And Caleb thought he'd won.

---

The pack house felt different now.

I moved through it over the following days, cataloging changes I was supposed to be too broken to notice. My Luna pendant—silver, crescent-shaped, given to me the night of our bonding—hung around Cheyenne's neck. She wore it openly, touching it often, her fingers tracing the curve like a talisman.

My clothes were gone from the Alpha suite. The closet I'd used for two years now held her things—dresses in colors I'd never worn, shoes in her size. The suite itself smelled wrong. Lavender, but watered down. A diluted echo of my own scent that made my wolf snarl silently behind the suppressant wall.

Cheyenne had tried to replace me by copying me. And Caleb's wolf had accepted the forgery because the original was chemically silenced.

Pack members who used to defer to me now offered uncomfortable nods. Pitying glances. They knew something had shifted. The hierarchy was rearranging itself around my absence, and I was still standing in the middle of it, invisible.

I registered every change. Every small erasure. My face showed nothing.

At dinner on the fourth night, I sat at the communal table with the rest of the pack. Caleb and Cheyenne sat at the head, his hand resting on her shoulder. She laughed at something he said, bright and performative.

I reached for the water pitcher.

The rogue-bite scar on my thigh spiked with sudden heat.

I froze. The pain was sharp, localized, unmistakable. My involuntary wolfsbane proximity alarm, the one I'd been learning to read like a second sense.

The water pitcher. Crystal, communal, refilled twice during dinner service.

I set it down carefully. Pulled my personal bottle from my bag—prepared by Dr. Thorne, sealed, safe—and drank from that instead.

Across the table, Caleb watched me drink. His shoulders relaxed.

Under the table, my hand was steady.

He'd just tried to dose me again. In front of fifty pack members. So confident in my helplessness that he didn't bother hiding it.

I took another sip. Smiled at nothing.

The water pitcher sat in the center of the table, clear and poisonous, waiting for someone who would never touch it again.
