Chapter 1

The rogue's claws tore through my thigh at 3:47 on a Thursday afternoon.

I didn't scream. The sound stuck in my throat, trapped behind two years of silence. Pain exploded up my leg in white-hot waves, but what I registered first was the smell—feral, unwashed, wrong. A rogue. Inside the pack house.

The corridor was full of witnesses. Pack members frozen against the walls, eyes wide, nobody moving. The rogue's teeth were inches from my throat when Caleb's roar shook the hallway.

"Get back!"

The rogue released me and bolted. I hit the floor hard, blood soaking through my jeans, spreading fast. My leg wouldn't hold weight. The world tilted.

Caleb was there in seconds. His hands slid under my shoulders, lifting me like I weighed nothing. "I've got you," he said, his voice breaking in all the right places. "I've got you, Lillian."

I stared up at his face. Anguished. Devoted. Perfect.

He carried me through the pack house, past the common room where more wolves had gathered, their faces blurring together. Someone was crying. Caleb's arms tightened around me, his scent wrapping me in false safety—pine and earth, familiar and poisonous.

"Why was a rogue inside?" someone asked.

"Rehabilitation intake," Caleb said without breaking stride. "It was cleared through protocol. This shouldn't have happened."

No one questioned him. They never did.

Dr. Thorne's ward smelled like antiseptic and wolfsbane. The scent made my thigh throb harder, a dull ache beneath the tearing pain. Caleb set me on the examination table, his hand lingering on my shoulder.

"Fix her," he told Dr. Thorne. Then, to me, softer: "You're safe now."

I nodded. Let my eyes fill with grateful tears. Caleb squeezed my shoulder once and left.

Dr. Thorne worked in silence, cutting away the shredded denim, cleaning the wounds with steady hands. The gashes were deep. Four parallel cuts, ragged at the edges. My leg shook.

"This will need stitches," Dr. Thorne said quietly. "And time."

I nodded again. Words felt impossible.

He numbed the area, threaded the needle. I watched the ceiling and counted stitches. Twelve. Fifteen. Twenty.

Then the mark on my neck caught fire.

I gasped, hand flying to my throat. The burn was instant, searing, like someone had pressed a brand into the old scar. Not pain from my leg—pain from the bond. The mate bond.

Caleb was marking someone.

The realization hit a second before the sound did. Through the bond channel—the connection I'd thought was dead, dormant, gone—I heard her laugh. Breathy. Delighted.

Cheyenne.

"Yes," she whispered, the word drifting through the bond like smoke. "Yes, Caleb."

Then his voice, low and rough: "Mine."

The wet sound of teeth breaking skin. The bond flared white-hot, burning through every nerve. I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. My body locked on the table, paralyzed by agony that wasn't coming from my leg at all.

Something inside me cracked.

Not the bond. Deeper than that.

My wolf slammed awake.

The aura erupted outward like a shockwave. Dr. Thorne staggered backward, his instruments clattering to the floor. The lights flickered. Glass vials rattled on the shelves.

I felt her—massive, silver, furious. Two years of silence shattered in an instant. She surged against my ribs, clawing for the surface, and the air in the ward turned electric.

Dr. Thorne recovered fast. His eyes went wide, then sharp. He crossed to a locked cabinet, yanked it open, and pulled out a small black case.

"Hold still," he said.

He opened the case. Inside were syringes filled with clear liquid. Military-grade suppressants. He didn't ask permission. He injected the first dose into my arm.

The aura flickered. My wolf snarled, fighting it.

"Again," I whispered.

He gave me a second dose. The aura collapsed inward, clamping down like a fist. My wolf howled inside my skull, but the suppressants held. The scent that had flooded the room—lavender and frost, sharp and unmistakable—faded into nothing.

Dr. Thorne set the syringe down. His hands were steady, but his face was pale.

"If that had breached the walls," he said quietly, "he would know."

I nodded. Tears tracked down my temples, hot and silent. My leg throbbed. My neck burned. The bond was still open, still transmitting—Cheyenne's soft sighs, Caleb's murmured praise, the sound of them in the next room.

I closed my eyes.

"I need to know," I said. My voice came out flat. Exact. "The Luna Accord. What does it require for a valid tribunal?"

Dr. Thorne paused. Then he began to speak.

"Three witnesses of Beta rank or higher. Invocation before the Lycan Council or their appointed arbiter. The exact phrasing: 'I invoke the Luna Accord and demand formal tribunal under the laws of the Moon Goddess.'"

I repeated it back to him, word for word.

He watched me for a long moment. Then he nodded once and turned to his desk. He opened a drawer, pulled out a second patient file—one I'd never seen—and began to write.

I lay on the table, leg bandaged, wolf clamped down, and listened to Cheyenne's laughter drift through the bond like poison.

Outside the ward, the pack house was quiet.

I would go back in the morning. I would smile. I would thank Caleb for saving me.

And I would wait.
