Chapter 1

The bond broke at exactly 10:47 p.m., three sentences into Desmond's rejection vow.

I was standing on the dais beside him in my Luna whites, the mark on my neck still warm from where he'd kissed it an hour earlier in the dressing room. Three hundred wolves filled the great hall below us. The Nightridge alliance banquet—my alliance, the one I'd spent six months negotiating—was supposed to be a celebration. Desmond held the ceremonial goblet in one hand. His other hand was not touching me.

Then he turned. Not to the crowd. To me.

"I, Desmond Harrow, Alpha of the Ironvale Pack—" His voice carried the formal cadence I'd heard him practice for other ceremonies. "—reject you, Adelaide Raya Voss, daughter of Raya Voss, as my mate and Luna before the Moon Goddess and this assembly."

The mark went cold first. Not painful yet—just suddenly, impossibly cold, like someone had pressed ice directly against the nerve. Then the bond itself tore. It didn't snap cleanly. It ripped, slow and wet, the way flesh tears when you pull it instead of cutting. The pain came through every bond-line we'd built over seven years, all at once, transmitted through my blood and bone and the base of my skull. My knees buckled. I didn't fall—I caught the edge of the table—but my vision whited out for three full seconds.

When it cleared, Cassandra was stepping onto the dais.

She wore white. The same shade as my gown. The same lace pattern at the collar. She'd copied me down to the sleeve length. She stopped beside Desmond and smiled at the crowd like she'd earned this.

I was still holding the table. The transmitted bond-pain was rolling through me in waves now, each one worse than the last, and I could feel my wolf flickering inside my chest—dimming, destabilizing, like a candle about to go out. But underneath it, something else stirred. Something I'd never felt before. Deep. Ancient. Coiled at the base of my spine, responding to the extremity of the agony with a pressure that made my bones ache.

It didn't surface. It waited.

Desmond bent down. For a second I thought he was going to help me stand. Instead, he pulled a crumpled bill from his pocket and tossed it at my feet. A twenty. It landed beside my shoe.

"Take the pups to a diner," he said. Loud enough for the front tables to hear. "Lunas who can't even shift properly don't belong at Alpha tables."

The hall went silent. Not the kind of silence that means shock. The kind that means everyone heard and no one's going to intervene.

I looked at the bill. Then at the mark scar already forming on my neck—I could feel it, the skin tightening and cooling where the bond used to sit warm. Then at Desmond. His expression was blank. Not cruel. Just... done. Like I was a task he'd finally crossed off.

Cassandra touched his arm. Possessive. Her fingers curled around his wrist the way mine used to.

I didn't cry. I bent down, picked up the twenty, and folded it once. My hands were shaking but I made them stop. I straightened. Looked at Desmond one more time. He was already turning away, already lifting the goblet toward Cassandra like I'd never been standing there at all.

I walked off the dais. Down the center aisle. Three hundred wolves watched me pass and not one of them moved. I kept my spine straight. The bond-pain was still tearing through me but I didn't let it show on my face. I made it to the door. Pushed it open. Stepped into the cold air outside.

Then I let myself shake.

The pain came harder once I was alone—wave after wave of it, like my body was trying to reject something that was already gone. My wolf whimpered once, thin and weak, and then went quiet. Too quiet. I pressed my hand against my chest and felt almost nothing. Just that deep, coiled pressure underneath, waiting.

I walked to the kitchen wing. Maddox and Dawson were there with the pack's nursemaid, playing with wooden blocks on the floor. They looked up when I came in. The nursemaid took one look at my face and left without a word.

I knelt down. Pulled them both into my arms. Held them until the transmitted bond-pain finally started to ebb. Their small wolves pressed toward my scent—harder than they ever had before, urgent and insistent, like they were trying to tell me something. Maddox made a soft noise against my shoulder. Dawson's hands fisted in my dress.

I filed it away. The way their wolves were reacting. The pressure coiling tighter in my spine. The fact that Desmond had just destroyed me in front of the entire pack and I was still breathing.

I didn't sleep that night. I sat in the nursery with my sons curled against me and felt the mark scar finish forming on my neck. Cold. Empty. A door closing on an empty room.

By morning, I knew what I had to do.

I had to go back to the pack house. I had files there—seven years of alliance records, financial audits, every piece of work I'd done that Desmond had signed his name to. If I was being erased, I wasn't leaving the evidence behind.

I dressed in plain clothes. Left the pups with the nursemaid. Walked across the grounds to the main house. The front door was unlocked. I went straight to the Luna's office—my office—and pushed the door open.

Cassandra was sitting at my desk.

She'd rearranged everything. My files were scattered across the floor. My mother's dried lavender sachet—the one I kept in the top drawer—was lying on the windowsill like trash. She looked up when I entered and smiled.

"Oh," she said. "Adelaide. I didn't realize you still had access."

I walked to the desk. Picked up the nearest file. It was the Nightridge alliance contract. My handwriting covered the margins.

"This office hasn't been formally transferred," I said. My voice came out steady. "No Luna succession ceremony has been conducted before the pack."

Cassandra's smile didn't waver. "Desmond said I could start organizing. There's so much to learn."

"Then learn it somewhere else."

Footsteps behind me. I turned. Desmond stood in the doorway, his arms crossed. His face was the same blank expression from last night. Behind him, Georgina watched with one hand touching her Harrow crest pin.

"Adelaide." Desmond's voice dropped into Alpha tone. The command hit me like a physical weight—my weakened wolf forced to its knees inside my chest, my body trying to obey against my will. "You don't give orders here anymore."

I stayed on my feet. Barely. The Alpha tone pressed down harder and my wolf whimpered—but underneath it, that ancient pressure surged. Hot. Violent. Just for a second. Desmond blinked, surprise flickering across his face before it subsided.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a gray armband. Omega rank. He dropped it at my feet.

"You never deserved the Luna title," he said.

Georgina smiled from the doorway.

I looked at the armband. Then at Desmond. Then at Cassandra, still sitting in my chair, touching things that weren't hers.

I bent down. Picked up the armband. Held it in both hands.

Then I put it on myself. Slowly. Deliberately. So everyone in the doorway could see that I wasn't broken.

I was choosing my moment.

"Is that all?" I asked.

Desmond's jaw tightened. "Get out."

I walked past him. Past Georgina. Out of the house. The Omega armband sat cold and tight around my bicep, and my wolf was still dim and flickering inside me, but that pressure—that deep, ancient thing coiling at the base of my spine—pulsed once, steady and certain.

Whatever was waking up inside me, it wasn't finished yet.
