Chapter 2

The morning after the severance, I woke to a silence that felt like pressure against my eardrums. My wolf was still there—I could feel her, a steady presence curled tight in the back of my mind—but the space where the mate bond had lived was empty. Raw. Like a tooth pulled clean, leaving nothing but the ghost of what used to be.

I got up. Showered. Wrapped my hands for training. The routine was mechanical, precise. I didn't let myself think about the fact that Justin's presence was gone from the edge of my awareness. Didn't let myself wonder if he felt the absence the same way I did.

The training grounds were already busy when I arrived. Wolves in their human forms ran drills across the open field. The scent of dirt and sweat hung in the morning air. I headed toward the sparring rings, keeping my gaze forward.

That's when I felt it. The stares.

Not open. Not direct. Just... there. Eyes sliding toward me and then away. Conversations that paused half a beat too long when I passed. A ripple of awareness that followed me across the field like a shadow I couldn't shake.

I rolled my shoulders and kept walking.

"Avery."

Declan's voice cut through the noise. I stopped.

He stood at the edge of the sparring rings, arms crossed over his broad chest. Senior warrior instructor. Pack elder. The kind of wolf whose opinion carried weight in every room he entered. His gray-streaked hair was pulled back, and his expression was carved from stone.

I turned to face him. "Declan."

"Walk with me."

It wasn't a request.

We walked to the far edge of the training grounds, away from the other wolves. The forest pressed close here, pine trees standing like silent witnesses. Declan stopped and turned to look at me. His jaw was tight.

"You severed a fated bond," he said flatly. "In front of the entire pack."

I met his gaze. "Yes."

"With the future Beta."

"Yes."

His eyes narrowed. "Do you understand what you've done?"

I kept my voice level. "I ended a bond that required me to accept public humiliation in silence."

"You destabilized pack hierarchy," Declan shot back. "Justin Campbell was set to take his father's place. You were set to stand beside him as Luna. That's not just a personal bond, Avery. It's a structural position. And you walked away from it because of a dare game at a ceremony."

"I walked away from it," I said quietly, "because he chose to put his mouth on another she-wolf in front of half the pack and then used our bond to pressure me into silence instead of defending me publicly. That's not a Luna bond. That's a leash."

Declan's expression didn't shift. "A proper Luna would have handled it privately. Smoothed it over. Maintained pack stability."

"A proper mate," I replied, "would have chosen his fated bond over a drunk dare. But we don't seem to be holding him to the same standard, do we?"

The silence stretched between us. A breeze moved through the trees, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Declan's jaw worked.

"You chose your pride over your pack," he said finally.

I held his gaze without flinching. "I chose my dignity over a bond that required me to disappear into silence. If that destabilizes the pack, maybe the pack needs to be destabilized."

I turned and walked back toward the sparring rings. My hands were steady. My wolf was quiet. Behind me, Declan said nothing.

But I felt his eyes on my back the entire way.

---

The whispers started in earnest after that.

I heard them in the dining hall when I went to grab lunch. Two she-wolves at the next table, voices just low enough that they thought I couldn't hear.

"—too cold, that's the problem—"

"—what future Beta wants a mate who can't bend—"

I kept my eyes on my tray. Ate my food. Left without looking back.

I heard them in the locker room after training. A group of younger wolves, changing out of their workout gear.

"—impossible to mate properly, my mom said—"

"—no wonder he kissed someone else—"

I pulled my shirt over my head and walked out. Didn't slam the door. Didn't give them the satisfaction.

I heard them during the evening pack run, in glances exchanged over my head when I fell into formation. In the way certain wolves peeled off to run with other groups when I joined the line.

I absorbed it. All of it. And I channeled every ounce of the pain into my training.

I ran patrol routes alone at night, pushing my wolf until my lungs burned and my legs shook. I sparred with anyone who would face me, throwing myself into every drill with a ferocity that made my instructors exchange uneasy looks across the rings. I slept with my window open because my wolf ran too hot for walls, and the night air was the only thing that kept me from feeling like I was suffocating.

Soleil tried. She sat with me during meals. Walked with me between training sessions. Didn't ask questions I couldn't answer.

But even she couldn't fill the silence that lived in my chest now.

---

Three days after the severance, I went for a solo night run that ended at the edge of pack territory. My wolf was restless, pacing beneath my skin. I shifted back to human form and stood there in the dark, breathing hard, trying to find some kind of center.

That's when I saw the lights.

The pack's rescue shelter sat at the far edge of Silverfang land, a low building surrounded by chain-link fencing. I'd passed it a hundred times and never gone inside. But tonight, something pulled me forward.

I walked through the gate.

Inside, the shelter smelled like hay and fur and something faintly medicinal. Rows of kennels lined the walls. Most of the occupants were asleep—older wolves, injured wolves, omega pups waiting for placement.

And then I saw him.

A runt omega pup, curled in the corner of the last kennel. Wolf-dog hybrid, from the look of him. Oversized ears. Anxious brown eyes that tracked my movement the second I stepped into view. His tail gave one hesitant thump against the floor.

I knelt down.

He crawled forward slowly, belly low, like he expected me to disappear. When he reached the kennel door, he pressed his nose against the mesh and whined softly.

Something in my chest cracked open.

I adopted him that night. Signed the papers. Carried him back to my quarters wrapped in an old blanket. He followed me everywhere after that—into the kitchen, onto the bed, across the small living space I shared with Soleil. His needy, uncomplicated affection asked nothing of my wolf and required no vulnerability.

I named him Buster.

When Soleil came home and found him curled on the couch, she stopped in the doorway and stared.

"Avery," she said slowly. "Is that a dog?"

"Omega pup," I corrected. "Wolf-dog hybrid. Rescue."

Buster's tail thumped.

Soleil crossed the room, dropped to her knees, and immediately started scratching behind his oversized ears. "He's perfect," she declared. "Most important member of this household. I will die for him."

For the first time since the severance, I smiled.

It didn't fix anything. The whispers didn't stop. The stares didn't disappear. Declan's judgment still sat heavy in the back of my mind.

But when Buster curled up against my side that night, his warm weight pressing into my ribs, something in my chest loosened enough to let me breathe.

I didn't cry. But I let my hand rest on his fur, and I let myself feel the small, steady comfort of something that didn't require me to be anything other than what I was.

It was enough. For now.
