Chapter 3

In the quiet of my new rooms at Thornveil, I sat at a polished blackwood desk. My body still carried a dull, hollow ache low in my belly—the phantom weight of the pup I had lost on Ironholt’s stone floor. But my mind was completely clear.

For ten years, I had held Bryson’s pack together with invisible strings. I pulled out a leather-bound notebook and began listing every single one.

The rare elder-root shipments from the southern valleys that kept Ironholt's warriors from splintering their bones during winter training. The apothecary routes from Oakhaven that supplied their fever-balms. The private cell numbers of five regional pack commanders who had signed mutual aid pacts only because I had personally called in debts from ancient ties.

I picked up the secure phone on the desk and started dialing.

"Alessia?" Robert’s rough voice came through the line. He was the head of the southern herbalist guild. "Is everything alright? The winter shipment for Ironholt is packed and ready to haul."

"Cancel it, Robert," I said quietly.

A pause stretched over the line. "Cancel it? Bryson's borders go frozen in three weeks. Without those roots, half his Delta line will be coughing blood by December."

"Cancel it," I repeated, my fingers resting lightly against the scarred skin on my neck where my mate mark used to be. "Bryson Hunt rejected me before his pack. He crowned Presley Wright as his Luna, severed our bond, and let the shock kill our child. Then he had his enforcers throw me into the mud."

The silence on the other end was absolute. When Robert spoke again, his voice was tight with fury.

"My Goddess. Alessia... we will burn the crates before Ironholt sees a single leaf. We deal with you. We have never answered to that arrogant pup."

"Thank you, Robert."

Every call followed the same pattern. The commanders, the traders, the healers. Not a single one asked for proof. None of them hesitated.

Within seventy-two hours, the lifeline was completely cut. Along Ironholt’s borders, the ward-scents I had spent a decade brewing—distilled nightshade, dried moss, and silver-fern—began to dry up, turning to useless ash in the autumn wind.

Two weeks later, the first intelligence brief from the royal trackers landed on my breakfast tray.

At dawn the previous morning, rogue scouts had breached Ironholt’s eastern perimeter.

For ten straight years, no rogue had set foot on that soil. My ward-scents had burned their throats and blurred their senses, turning them around miles before they reached the fence line. But yesterday, the boundary was empty.

A pack of six rogue wolves had slipped past the trees and ambushed a patrol. Three of Bryson’s warriors were mauled, their ribs cracked and throats torn before the rest of the unit managed to drive the rogues back into the brush.

According to the tracker's report, Bryson’s Gamma, Vance, had sprinted to the border post with a bucket of common pine resin to reseal the markers. But when he reached the ancient stones, they were cold, blank, and dead. Vance had patrolled those borders for eight years, yet he had no idea what formula had kept them alive.

Pale and sweating, he had marched straight into the pack house dining hall, interrupting Bryson and Presley over their morning meal.

Vance’s voice had carried across the entire room, shaking as he asked the question Bryson had never once bothered to consider:

*"Alpha... who was doing the wards?"*

I set the paper down and took a slow sip of hot tea.

Bryson had truly believed the land obeyed him simply because he wore an Alpha’s coat. Now he would learn the cost of forgetting the hands that fed him.

That evening, the grand hall of Thornveil was opened for my formal receiving ceremony.

Alaric had spared nothing. Massive crystal chandeliers bathed the hall in gold light, reflecting off the dark marble columns and polished obsidian floors. I wore a gown of midnight blue silk. It covered my shoulders and arms, but the neckline was cut wide enough to leave the left side of my neck bare.

The jagged, pale pink scar of the severed mate bond was visible to anyone who looked. I refused to cover it. It wasn't a mark of shame. It was a reminder of what I had survived.

When Alaric led me onto the raised dais, the hundred-odd Lycans in the room went dead silent.

Their scents washed over me—smoke, aged cedar, iron, and ancient blood. Underneath the polite smiles, their eyes were wide. They had all felt the shockwave two weeks ago. They knew a silver-white Lycan wolf of royal blood had roared to life beyond the border.

Now, they stared at me. Some looked in genuine awe. Others looked with sharp, hungry calculation.

I didn't flinch. I had spent ten years reading rooms to keep Bryson alive, learning how to spot weakness before it became a threat. I clocked every face. I saw the nervous swallow of an elder who owed money to border packs. I caught the slight tilt of an ambassador’s chin as he tried to guess how my return would reshape the council’s trade routes.

Deep inside my chest, Seraphine stirred, her silver eyes glowing behind my ribs.

*Let them stare,* she rumbled. *They are sheep playing at wolves.*

Across the crowded room, leaning casually against a dark stone archway, stood a man I recognized from Alaric’s briefings.

Dorian Ashby. Beta to Prince Cruz and the head of Thornveil’s intelligence network.

He didn't bow, and he didn't look away when my eyes met his. He wasn't staring at my dress or the scar on my throat. He was watching the way I stood, the way I held the room, the way I mapped out every exit without turning my head.

I held his gaze for two steady seconds, then looked away.

In the shadows beneath the arch, Dorian reached inside his dark suit jacket, pulled out his phone, and typed a single message with his thumb.

The screen glowed faintly in the dim corner as he sent it directly to Cruz Parker:

*She is exactly who you thought she was.*
