Chapter 3

Travis stood up halfway through the third course.

He had been waiting for this moment. I could see it in the way he adjusted his cuffs, the way his smile sharpened as he lifted his glass. The hall quieted. Conversations died mid-sentence. Everyone turned to face the head table.

"To Shadowridge's future," he began. His voice carried easily across the room. Smooth. Practiced. "To the restoration of our pack's natural order. To bloodlines that honor tradition and wolves who understand their place."

A few murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd.

"Five years ago," Travis continued, "we welcomed a stray into our midst. We gave her shelter. We gave her a title. And we learned—" He paused, letting the silence stretch. "—that the Moon Goddess knows what she's doing when she corrects our mistakes."

Laughter. Not loud. Not cruel. Just… agreeable. Like he had said something clever.

I kept my hands folded in my lap. I kept my spine straight.

Wren whimpered faintly in my chest. *Ever. Please.*

Boone's voice cut through from across the hall, loud enough that everyone could hear. "Five years of playing Luna and the stray Omega still can't hold a proper mate. Moon Goddess knows what she's doing when she takes things back."

More laughter. Louder this time.

I looked at the head table.

Beckham was staring at his wine glass. His jaw was tight. His hand rested on the stem, fingers drumming once, twice. He did not look up. He did not speak. He just sat there, silent and still, while his Beta mocked me and his Gamma laughed and Nicole smiled serenely beside him like she had won something.

I realized, in that moment, that this was worse than cruelty.

This was permission.

Travis raised his glass higher. "To appropriate bloodlines," he said. "And to the Luna Shadowridge truly deserves."

Every glass in the room lifted.

I did not move.

And then the doors exploded inward.

The sound was like thunder. Wood splintering. Hinges shrieking. The candles on the tables flickered wildly, and a wave of pressure rolled through the hall—thick and ancient and so dense it felt like the air itself had turned to stone.

I couldn't breathe.

Every wolf in the room dropped to their knees.

Travis went down mid-sentence, his glass shattering on the floor. Boone collapsed forward, his forehead hitting the table. Nicole's serene smile crumbled into something wide-eyed and terrified as her legs buckled beneath her. Even Beckham—Alpha of Shadowridge, dominant and unyielding—went rigid in his chair, his hands white-knuckled on the armrests, fighting the instinct to submit.

But his legs were shaking.

The aura was Lycan.

I knew it before I saw him. I felt it in the way Wren suddenly lifted her head inside my chest, whimpering not in pain but in something else. Something I didn't have a name for.

And then he stepped through the doorway.

He was massive. Even half-shifted, even holding back, he filled the space like a force of nature. Storm-gray fur rippled across shoulders too broad to be fully human. His hands were tipped with claws that gleamed in the candlelight. And his eyes—gold, burning, utterly inhuman—swept across the room and locked onto me.

He crossed the hall in three strides.

Every wolf he passed flinched back. Travis tried to lift his head and couldn't. Boone was pressed flat against the floor, shaking. Nicole had gone pale.

The Lycan stopped in front of my table. He turned. And then he positioned his enormous body between me and the entire ranked circle, a living wall of fur and muscle and barely-contained violence.

A low rumble vibrated through the floor. It came from deep in his chest, a sound that was not quite a growl and not quite a warning but somehow both.

One word. Just one.

"Enough."

The silence that followed was absolute.

I stared at the back of his head. At the gray fur. At the way his claws flexed once against the floor, leaving shallow grooves in the wood.

Wren stirred inside me. Stronger than she had been in weeks. She pressed forward, sniffing at the air, and her voice was soft and confused and achingly hopeful.

*Ever. I know him.*

I didn't understand.

I stood up slowly. My legs felt unsteady. The Lycan didn't move. He just stood there, shielding me, his breathing slow and controlled.

I reached up. My hand looked very small against the side of his face.

He turned his head. Gold eyes met mine. And something in them—something raw and desperate and impossibly gentle—made my chest tighten.

I pulled his face down to mine.

And I kissed him.

It was not soft. It was not hesitant. It was deliberate and unmistakable and meant to be seen by every single wolf in this hall.

I felt his breath hitch. Felt his claws dig into the floor. Felt the rumble in his chest shift into something that sounded almost like a whimper.

When I pulled back, his eyes were still on mine. Searching. Asking a question I didn't know how to answer yet.

I stepped around him. I walked toward the door.

Behind me, Beckham's roar shook the walls. Fury. Disbelief. Something that sounded like my name.

I didn't look back.

The Lycan stayed exactly where he was. I heard the low rumble again, deeper this time, a warning that needed no translation. I heard Beckham snarl. I heard chairs scraping. I heard Nicole's high, breathless voice saying something I couldn't make out.

And then I was through the doors, and the night air hit my face, and I kept walking.

Footsteps behind me. Heavy. Unhurried.

I stopped at the edge of the lawn. I turned.

The Lycan was following me. He had shifted back—mostly. Still too tall. Still too broad. His eyes still gold.

He stopped three feet away. Close enough that I could smell him. Pine and rain and something wild.

"You don't know me," he said quietly. His voice was rough. Like he hadn't used it in a long time.

Wren pressed forward in my chest. *Yes we do,* she whispered. *Ever. We do.*

I looked up at him. At the gold eyes. At the way he held himself like he was afraid I might run.

"Who are you," I said.

He reached into his pocket. Pulled something out. Held it in his palm.

It was a small origami star. Faded. Worn. The paper creased and soft from years of being carried.

I stared at it.

And then I remembered.

A chain-link fence. A boy with hollow eyes. Food pressed through the gaps. Stars folded from candy wrappers because I didn't have anything else to give him.

"Javier," he said softly. "My name is Javier Coleman."

My breath caught.

"And I've been looking for you," he said, "for a very long time."
