After My Mate Helped My Sister Steal My Gift Novel Cover

After My Mate Helped My Sister Steal My Gift

At 9:47, the stone floor trembles as six packs stomp out a howl that rises from my throat—not Annalise's. Leather cuffs bite my wrists, wolfsbane smoke sears my lungs, and my wolf stays chained beneath my skin. Above the altar, my sister wears my song like a crown, amber hair blazing in torchlight while the Alphas murmur "generational." My own mate helped her steal my gift. I could stop singing and let the healing die. Instead I hold the note and plan. When the cuffs come off, the packs will learn whose voice truly keeps them alive.

Chapter 4

I woke on the stone floor of my quarters with the taste of copper flooding my mouth and my hands curled into claws against my chest.

I did not know how I had gotten from the chamber to here. Someone had carried me. The bruises on the backs of my thighs suggested the Deltas had dropped me at least once. My dress was stiff with dried sweat and something darker at the collar where the needle had gone in.

I lay very still and listened to my own breathing.

Then I sat up, dragged the journal from beneath the mattress, and started writing.

*Post-injection, hour approximately 14. Nerve pathways still burning at extremities. Vision clear. Wolf presence—* I stopped. Pressed my thumb against my wrist. *Wolf presence: undetermined. Something moved during the howl. Something is still moving now. Cannot identify.*

I wrote for three days.

I catalogued every tremor, every wave of nausea, every moment my heartbeat stuttered out of rhythm. I compared each symptom against the log I had been keeping of my mother's low-dose exposures for the past nineteen months. The serum was different. Sharper. More refined. But the underlying signature—the specific way it sat in the back of my throat, the way it made silver taste like a shape rather than a flavor—was the same.

Same variant. Same source. Same hand.

I wrote the conclusion in small, careful letters at the bottom of the page.

*Serum and tincture: identical base compound. Judson supplied both.*

I closed the journal. Slid it back beneath the mattress. Retrieved the vial from the hollow stone in the corner and added a second sample—a swab of the dried residue from my own collar—into a separate compartment. Two vials now. Two pieces of evidence. Two things that were mine.

The Deltas brought food twice a day. I ate it. I did not speak to them. I did not ask for my mother. I did not ask for anything.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and I waited.

---

He came on the third night.

I heard his boots stop outside my door and my body reacted before my mind could catch up—a full-body clench, the muscles in my jaw locking, the phantom cedar-and-honey scent rising in my sinuses like bile. I made a note of it later. *Nervous system retains scent-memory even after cognitive rejection. Response: nausea, tachycardia, involuntary muscle rigidity.*

"Aria."

His voice through the wood was low, warm, careful. The same voice that had knelt in front of me and unbuckled my cuffs. The same voice that had said *the Moon Goddess doesn't make mistakes.*

I sat on the floor with my back against the door and did not answer.

"I need you to listen to me," he said. A pause. Perfectly timed. I could see him now, the way I hadn't been able to see him before—the deliberate breath, the practiced softening of the consonants. "The circle was not my choice. Your father made it clear that if I intervened, the Ironveil alliance would collapse. I had to let it happen. I was going to come to you afterward. I was going to take you out that same night."

Smooth transitions. That was what I noticed. The sentences flowed into each other with the ease of something rehearsed in front of a mirror.

"Aria. Please. Say something."

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Three beats. Four.

He stayed at the door for a long time. Long enough that I felt the wood cool against my spine and the phantom scent begin to fade. When he finally left, his footsteps were slower than they had been coming in.

I added one more line to my log.

*Subject attempted contact. Denied. Physiological revulsion to scent-memory confirmed. Do not permit proximity again.*

---

My mother came the next night with Annalise.

Annalise wore pale gold. Her hair was braided in the ceremonial style, small white flowers woven through the plait, and she smelled like the lavender oil the pack Healer reserved for brides and honored guests. She sat on the edge of my cot as if she belonged there.

"*Broken Butterfly* is opening the Gathering," she said. Her voice was bright. Her smile did not touch her eyes; it never had. "Six packs, Aria. Six. And a Lycan Court observer. I wanted to thank you personally. What you've contributed to this family—it means everything."

My mother stood behind her, one hand resting lightly on Annalise's shoulder.

"Everything has worked out for the best, sweetheart," she said softly. Her voice was the gentlest thing in the room. "Annalise's happiness is the pack's happiness. You should rest tonight. You've done so much already."

I looked at them.

At the daughter who had watched a needle go into my neck and said *I'm sorry* without meaning it. At the mother who had smoothed my hair before locking the chamber door for nineteen years and still, somehow, believed she was a good woman.

I did not speak.

I think the silence unsettled Annalise more than anything I could have said. She hesitated, her smile flickering, then rose and crossed to the door. My mother followed. At the threshold, my mother turned back.

"I love you, Aria."

I looked at the wall.

The door closed. The lock turned.

I waited until their footsteps faded down the corridor. Then I rose, went to the hollow stone in the corner, and retrieved both vials. I held them in my palm for a long moment—two small glass cylinders, the residue inside catching the low light like something almost beautiful.

I slid them into the interior hem of my dress, where I had stitched a pocket that morning with thread pulled from the mattress lining. The glass sat cool against my hip.

I would not leave them behind.

Tomorrow I would climb onto that stage.
