Chapter 2

That night, Maximus came for me.

I was in the pack house common room, sitting in the corner where my flower stall used to be. I'd dismantled it that morning. There was no point keeping it anymore. No one bought flowers from the packless whore.

I heard his footsteps before I saw him. The measured, deliberate stride of a man who had never needed to hurry because the world waited for him. When he appeared in the doorway, the room went silent. Warriors stopped mid-conversation. She-wolves froze with coffee cups halfway to their lips.

He didn't look at any of them. He looked at me.

"Harmony," he said. Just my name. But it carried that specific weight that made my spine straighten involuntarily. "Come with me."

I stood. My body obeyed before my mind could catch up. That's what five years of Alpha tone does — it rewires your instincts until compliance feels like breathing.

He led me through the corridor, past the banquet hall, past the administrative wing. Down. The stairs to the lower level were narrow and unlit. My shoes echoed against concrete. Behind me, Maximus said nothing.

We stopped at a heavy wooden door I'd seen maintenance workers use. Storage, I'd always assumed. Maximus pulled a key from his pocket and unlocked it.

"Inside," he said.

I looked at the doorway. Beyond it, darkness. Cold air drifted out, carrying the smell of damp stone and old wood.

"Maximus—"

"Inside." The Alpha tone slammed into me like a physical blow. My feet moved. I stepped through the doorway onto a narrow staircase leading down into deeper darkness.

Behind me, Maximus's voice came again, colder now. "You will stay here until you understand that obedience is not optional."

The door closed. The lock clicked.

I stood on the stairs in complete darkness and listened to his footsteps retreat.

For a long moment, I didn't move. My eyes tried to adjust but there was nothing to adjust to. No windows. No light. Just stone walls pressing in from all sides and air so cold it hurt to breathe.

I descended the stairs carefully, one hand on the wall. At the bottom, my foot hit level ground. I swept my hands out and found wooden crates, metal shelving, the rough texture of burlap sacks. A storage cellar. Unheated. Unused.

Above me, the building creaked. Then I heard it — the wind. Not the usual autumn gusts but something deeper, more sustained. The blizzard the weather reports had been warning about for days.

I pulled my cardigan tighter and sat down against the wall.

The cold came slowly at first. A chill that made me tuck my hands under my arms. Then deeper. The kind that settled into your bones and stayed there.

I tried to shift. My wolf stirred weakly, then retreated. She'd been fading for months now, going quieter with each punishment, each locked door, each time Maximus used his tone to press her down. Now, when I needed her most, she had nothing left to give.

So I sat. And I waited.

Time stopped meaning anything. I couldn't tell if an hour had passed or six. The darkness was so complete I started seeing shapes that weren't there — shadows moving at the edge of vision, lights that blinked and disappeared.

The cold got worse. My teeth chattered. My fingers went numb. I tucked my knees to my chest and wrapped my arms around them, trying to trap whatever warmth my body still generated.

Above me, the storm howled. I heard it through the walls, through the ceiling, a sound like the world ending in slow motion.

I thought about my mother. About the mind-link going silent. About Kamden asking when she was coming home.

I thought about the mark on my neck, hidden under the scarf I still wore even now, even here in the dark where no one could see it. It burned. It always burned. A constant reminder of a bond that was supposed to mean protection, devotion, forever.

Instead it meant this. A cellar. A blizzard. A punishment for daring to ask questions.

I don't know when I started crying. I only noticed when the tears froze on my cheeks.

Thirty-six hours.

That's how long he left me there.

When the door finally opened, the light was blinding. I couldn't stand. My legs wouldn't work. Maximus descended halfway down the stairs and looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.

"Get up," he said.

I tried. My body didn't respond. Everything was numb and distant and wrong.

He sighed — actually sighed, like I was inconveniencing him — and came down the rest of the way. He pulled me to my feet. I leaned against him because I had no choice. He half-carried, half-dragged me up the stairs.

In the corridor, he released me. I slumped against the wall.

"The cellar was mercy," he said quietly. His voice was calm. Reasonable. Like he was explaining something obvious to a child. "The punishment for spreading lies about a Luna is exile. Remember that."

He walked away.

I stood there until feeling returned to my legs. Then I walked back to my room at the pack house's edge, locked the door, and rewrapped the scarf around my neck.

My hands didn't shake.

They used to. In the beginning, they shook all the time. But I'd learned. Shaking changed nothing. Crying changed nothing. Begging changed nothing.

So I stopped.

Two weeks later, the Annual Alliance Dinner arrived.

I wasn't supposed to attend. I never was. But Maximus had made it clear that my absence would be noted, and noting my absence meant questions, and questions meant complications he didn't want to deal with.

So I went.

I wore a simple black dress and the scarf. Always the scarf. I stood near the back of the banquet hall while Alphas and Lunas from neighboring packs filled the room. The Silverfang delegation arrived last — Conrad Dixon and his entourage, with Laurel at the center like a jewel in a crown.

She saw me immediately.

I watched her cross the room. Watched the crowd part for her. Watched fifty pairs of eyes follow her path until she stopped directly in front of me.

"Harmony," she said warmly. Loudly enough for nearby wolves to hear. "I've been meaning to speak with you."

I said nothing.

She reached out and touched my arm. Her fingers were cold. "I heard about your mother. Such a tragedy. Your family just seems so... accident-prone."

Someone nearby laughed softly. Another wolf whispered something I couldn't hear.

Laurel's hand drifted upward, toward the edge of my scarf. Her fingers brushed the fabric. "You must be so careful, Harmony. Accidents happen so easily."

My throat closed. If I spoke, if I defended myself, if I revealed the mark — everything would shatter. The only leverage I had left was the truth Maximus had commanded me to hide. And Laurel knew it.

She smiled. "Take care of yourself."

She walked away. The crowd swallowed her. Conversations resumed.

I stood frozen for thirty seconds. Then I turned and walked quickly toward the bathroom.

I made it to the stall before I vomited.

No one followed me. No one ever did.
