Chapter 4

The training yard smelled like wet earth and wolf sweat. Dawn hadn't broken yet, but I was already moving through the drill sequence—shift, hold, shift back. My bones had stopped screaming during the transformation sometime around day five. Now it just felt like pressure and release, over and over, until my body learned to do it without thinking.

I'd been at it for three weeks. Every morning before the sun came up, every evening after the command briefings. Cillian had offered me a trainer. I'd refused. I didn't need someone telling me how to move. I needed my body to remember what six years of wolfsbane had stolen.

Today was different. The Blackmere warriors were gathering at the far end of the yard, assembling for their regular morning session. I'd avoided training in front of them until now. But I couldn't hide forever, and part of me—the part that had spent six years managing alliance meetings and warrior rotations—knew that if I wanted their respect, I had to earn it the way wolves earned everything.

I shifted.

This time I held the form. My silver wolf stood in the center of the yard, and I let my aura spread outward—not aggressive, just present. The warriors went quiet. I could feel their attention like weight against my fur.

I didn't snarl. Didn't posture. I just stood there, breathing, letting them see exactly what I was.

A Delta near the front—broad-shouldered, scarred across the muzzle, probably twice my age in service—shifted his weight. Then his head lowered. Not much. Just enough. The involuntary deference posture, the one a wolf's body makes before the conscious mind catches up.

He blinked and straightened immediately, but I'd already seen it.

I shifted back. My feet hit the dirt, human again, and I rolled my shoulders once to settle my spine. "Next drill," I said. My voice came out steady. "Formation defense. North wall."

The warriors moved. No hesitation. No questions.

I caught movement on the compound wall—Cillian, standing near the watchtower, arms crossed. He'd been there the whole time. Our eyes met across the distance. He nodded once, then turned and walked away.

That evening, when I arrived at the briefing room, my chair had been moved. Not to the back where I'd been sitting. To the head of the left flank, directly across from Cillian's position at the table's center.

I sat down without comment. So did he.

---

Declan arrived at dusk two days later.

I was in my quarters, reviewing a treaty draft, when the mind-link request came through—border patrol, asking if I'd meet someone at the main gate. They didn't say who. I went anyway.

The gate was open when I got there. Declan stood just inside the threshold, a travel pack slung over one shoulder and a leather document case in his hands. He'd been one of my best students—quick learner, disciplined, the kind of warrior who asked smart questions and remembered the answers.

He saw me and straightened. "Mia."

I stopped a few feet away. "Declan."

He held out the document case. "I brought these. Thought you should have them."

I took it. The leather was worn, the clasp familiar. I opened it. Inside were training schedules, alliance correspondence, supply route documentation—all in my handwriting, all bearing Jude's counter-signature at the bottom where he'd claimed credit. Page after page of work I'd done, attributed to someone else.

I looked up. Declan's jaw was tight.

"We all knew," he said quietly. "We just didn't know what he was doing to make you stay small."

I closed the case. My throat felt tight, but my hands were steady. "Thank you."

He nodded. "I'm requesting transfer. If you'll have me."

"Bunk assignments are through the east barracks," I said. "Report to the training master in the morning."

He left. I stood at the gate with the document case in my hands and watched him walk toward the barracks. Three more Ironvale warriors showed up within the week. Same story. Same choice.

Jude was hemorrhaging his own pack, one defection at a time.

---

The Greywood meeting was scheduled for midday in neutral territory—a stone hall halfway between their border and ours. Cillian came with me, but he let me lead. The Greywood Alpha, a stocky man named Corwin with gray threading through his beard, sat across the table with two of his senior wolves flanking him.

He looked skeptical before I even opened my mouth.

"I've heard the stories from Ironvale," he said. "Wolfless Omega. Unstable. Not someone I'd build an alliance on."

I met his eyes. "Then you've heard lies. Let's talk about what actually matters."

I spread the territorial map across the table. My fingers found the border dispute that had been festering for two years—the one Jude had refused to negotiate because it would have cost him a narrow strip of hunting ground he didn't need.

"You want access to the northern water source," I said. "Jude refused because he wanted leverage. I'm offering you a ten-year renewable agreement with shared access and a clause that protects both territories from rogue incursion. In exchange, Blackmere secures its eastern flank and you get the stability you've been asking for since before I left Ironvale."

Corwin leaned forward. "You wrote the original proposal."

"I did. Jude buried it. I'm not him."

We negotiated for three hours. I cited clause numbers from memory, adjusted terms on the fly, and gave ground where it made sense without giving up what mattered. By the time the sun started sinking, Corwin signed.

Afterward, as we walked to the horses, he stopped beside Cillian. "The woman who wrote those original treaties must have been extraordinary."

Cillian's expression didn't change. "She was. Jude poisoned her to keep her from knowing it."

Corwin's face went hard. He nodded once, then mounted and rode back toward Greywood.

I didn't say anything. I didn't need to. The alliance was signed. The work spoke for itself.

Cillian and I rode back to Blackmere in silence. When we reached the estate gates, he finally spoke.

"You didn't need me there."

I glanced at him. "You're the Lycan Prince. Your presence mattered."

"No," he said quietly. "You mattered. I was just the seal."

I didn't know what to say to that. So I didn't say anything.

We rode through the gates. Ghost was waiting at the entrance, tail wagging. I dismounted, and the dog limped over to press his nose against my hand.

I scratched behind his ears. For the first time in weeks, something in my chest loosened.

I was building something here. Something that was mine.
