Chapter 2

The tribunal hall smelled like old stone and wolf politics. I stood in the center of the floor, hands at my sides, while three hundred Alphas watched from the tiered seats rising up the walls. The Lycan Council sat at the high bench—five wolves older than most packs, their faces carved from years of judging exactly this kind of mess.

Lola's testimony had just finished. The clerk read it into the record in a flat, official voice: "The accused, Mia Kelly, did threaten and attempt physical violence against Luna Lola Chapman of Ironvale Pack on the night of her lawful installation, demonstrating hostility toward pack hierarchy and refusal to accept legitimate authority."

It was a lie. Every word. But it was a lie with Lola's father's seal on the parchment and two Thornfield warriors willing to swear they'd witnessed it.

The head councilor looked at me. "Mia Kelly. How do you answer these charges?"

I met his eyes. "I was never in the pack house that night. I left through the main gates immediately after the rejection ceremony. The sentries logged my exit at 10:31. The alleged incident took place at 11:15, inside the Luna's quarters. I couldn't have been in both places."

"The sentries are Ironvale wolves," Lola's representative said smoothly. "Loyal to their former coordinator. The logs could have been altered."

"Then check the security footage," I said. "The main gate has cameras. They're on a closed system that uploads to the Council's regional server every six hours. I didn't touch them."

The councilor made a note. A clerk hurried out. Lola shifted in her seat three rows up. I didn't look at her.

I answered every question the same way—precisely, without emotion, citing dates and documents and the kind of procedural detail I'd spent six years learning to weaponize. The alliance coordinator who'd managed treaty meetings in rooms like this didn't disappear just because Jude had thrown her out. She was still here. She was all I had left.

Then the heat started.

It came from inside my chest, spreading outward like I'd swallowed coals. My skin prickled. I pressed my palm against my ribs, trying to hold it in, but the sensation climbed my spine and wrapped around the base of my skull. My vision blurred at the edges.

The councilor was asking me something. I couldn't hear it over the roaring in my ears.

My knees buckled.

I hit the stone floor hard, palms slapping down to catch myself. The heat turned into fire. My bones ached—not pain exactly, but pressure, like something inside me was trying to get out and my skeleton was too small to hold it. I gasped, and the sound echoed wrong, too loud, bouncing off the vaulted ceiling.

Someone shouted. Footsteps rushed toward me. I tried to say I was fine, but my throat closed and the words came out as a choked snarl.

My spine arched. Light exploded across my skin—silver-white, bright enough that I saw it through my closed eyelids. The pressure in my bones crested, and then it broke.

I shifted.

Not the way I'd imagined it as a kid, smooth and controlled. This was violent. My body tore itself apart and rebuilt in seconds—limbs stretching, ribcage expanding, fur erupting across skin that burned and froze at the same time. I heard fabric rip. The tribunal floor was suddenly too close, and then I was looking down at it from a height I'd never had before.

I was standing on four legs.

The hall had gone completely silent.

I turned my head—too fast, everything was too fast, my senses were screaming—and caught my reflection in the polished stone pillar beside the floor. A wolf stared back at me. Massive. Silver fur, almost white in the torchlight, with a darker ridge along the spine. My eyes were the same gray they'd always been, but sharper now, and the aura rolling off my body made the air shimmer like heat rising off summer pavement.

Every wolf in the first three rows had stepped back.

I didn't move. I couldn't. My wolf was awake, fully awake for the first time, and she was furious and confused and so gods-damned powerful I could feel her presence like a second heartbeat inside my chest.

The head councilor stood slowly. His eyes were wide. "Alpha bloodline," he said quietly. "Silver-branch Blackmere."

Murmurs rippled through the chamber. Lola's face had drained to the color of old paper. Her representative was staring at me like I'd grown a second head.

Across the hall, movement. A figure rose from the observer's bench—tall, dark-haired, wearing the formal black of the Lycan Council. I knew who he was. Everyone knew who he was. Lycan Prince Cillian, the King's son, the wolf who'd sat through fifty tribunal sessions without saying a single word.

He was walking toward me.

He crossed the floor in silence. Alphas moved out of his way without being asked. He passed Jude, who'd gone rigid in his seat. He passed Lola's representative. He stopped three feet from where I stood, still trembling, still trying to understand what my body had just become.

Then he breathed in.

His entire body went still. His eyes locked on mine, and something in his expression cracked—just for a second, just enough that I saw the wolf underneath the prince.

"Mate," he said. His voice was low, rough, and absolutely certain.

The word hit me like a fist to the chest. My wolf surged forward, recognition slamming through me so hard I staggered. Wild honeysuckle and thunderstorm—that was my scent. Cedar smoke and rain—that was his. I knew it. I'd always known it, buried so deep I'd never let myself look.

Cillian turned to face the Council. When he spoke, his voice carried the weight of every generation of Blackmere wolves behind it.

"I invoke Lycan right of intervention. This wolf has been systematically suppressed through poisoning. Her bond has been violated. I claim sanctuary for Mia Kelly under Blackmere protection, and I offer her the position of strategic Beta in my service."

Jude shot to his feet. "You can't—"

Cillian's gaze landed on him. The air in the hall got heavier. Jude's mouth snapped shut, and for the first time since I'd known him, he looked small.

The head councilor nodded slowly. "The Council accepts. Mia Kelly is under Blackmere protection, effective immediately."

Two guards approached—Blackmere wolves, not Ironvale. One of them carried a cloak. Cillian took it and held it out toward me, not touching, just offering.

"Can you shift back?" he asked quietly.

I didn't know. I tried. My wolf resisted, snarling inside my head, but I pushed and felt my body collapse inward, bones reshaping, fur receding. I landed on my knees, human again, naked and shaking.

Cillian draped the cloak over my shoulders before I could process the cold. His hand didn't linger. He stepped back, giving me space, and gestured toward the side exit.

"This way," he said.

I stood. My legs barely held me. I wrapped the cloak tight and followed him out of the hall—not as a prisoner, not as an Omega, but as a wolf under royal protection.

Behind me, I heard Lola's voice, high and sharp, trying to restart her objection.

I didn't look back.
