Chapter 3

The pack hunt is mandated for every wolf who can shift. The notice goes up three days in advance, and I read the words 'every wolf' and know exactly who it is aimed at.

Seraphina announces it herself at the morning assembly, standing at Dominic's side with her hand on his arm. "A formal hunt in the Adirondack territory," she says, pleasant and bright. "We show the visiting packs what Shadowvale can do. Everyone participates."

Her eyes find mine across the crowd for one deliberate second.

My wolf cannot sustain a full shift. She can start the change and fail, seize, and collapse. Seraphina knows this. She is not asking me to hunt. She is asking me to prove that I cannot.

I say nothing. I accept the assignment.

---

On the morning of the hunt, I file out with the rest of the pack at gray dawn. Delta Roen assigns the routes. He is a broad, flat-eyed wolf who has never spoken to me beyond the minimum required. He hands me a map and points at a path that runs along the western ridge, rocky, narrow, cut by a ravine that I know drops twelve feet into broken stone.

"Your route," he says.

I take the map and look at it too long. The path is not the one the younger wolves were given. It is familiar the way a trap is familiar. I file the detail away.

But I do not refuse. Refusing is not an option. Refusing is a confession.

---

I shift first, along the treeline, out of sight of the gathered ranked wolves. The change starts the way it always does now—heat spreading through my chest, bones beginning their rearrange, my fur rising along my spine silver-pale. I close my eyes and I push.

For a moment, it works.

I am mid-stride when it happens. The seizure takes me without warning.

My muscles lock. My lungs close like a fist at the base of my throat. The completion of the shift that never happened reverses itself violently, caught between forms, and I go down on the trail with my bones grinding and my wolf screaming—a silent scream, because she cannot surface, cannot find the door.

I am already falling when I realize I am rolling down the slope.

The ravine meets me with stone. I do not hear the impact so much as feel it, a series of sharp, separate blows—my left forearm, my ribs, my shoulder—and then the ground holds still and I do not.

I lie at the bottom in the wet leaves and the cold, my breath coming in short pulls, and I take inventory even before the pain fully arrives.

Left forearm. Broken. Re-broken, in the same place it broke three years ago, the night I threw myself into the silver ambush meant for him.

Ribs. At least two, maybe three. One moves wrong when I breathe.

Wolf. Silent. Utterly, completely silent, the way she has been since the rejection, and now I cannot even reach her to ask if she is still there.

---

Through the ghost-thread of the mind-link he never fully severed, I feel him register something. A flicker. A phantom twinge of pain traveling down a line he has not let himself cut.

And then nothing.

Later I learn from Maren that he carried a fainting Seraphina back to the pack house without a backward glance. That he did not stop. That he did not ask.

I do not know this yet. At the bottom of the ravine, I know only that the thread goes cold, and I am alone.

---

I set the bones myself.

It takes a long time. I find a branch thick enough to splint my forearm and I tear a length of my own torn sleeve for the wrapping. When I pull the bone back into place, the pain white-outs my vision and I bite through my lower lip. I do not scream. There is no one to hear a scream here, and I learned a long time ago that screaming at nothing is an indulgence I cannot afford.

Then I drag myself up the ravine.

It takes longer than the fall. I climb with one arm, gripping roots, hauling my broken body up the steep face in stages, resting at every shelf. By the time I reach the top, the sun is high and my lips are dry and my blood has gone dark on the front of my tunic.

I walk back to Shadowvale alone.

---

Maren is waiting at the kitchen entrance when I come through the back before dawn. She sees my arm, the splint, the dried blood, and the horror on her face is not theatrical. It is the deep, private horror of someone who has just understood the shape of the game being played.

She does not ask questions. She takes me to her quarters, sets my bones properly, and wraps the wounds with clean cloth. Her hands are steady.

"What happened on the trail?" she says quietly.

I tell her everything. The assigned route. The seizure that came mid-shift. The wolfsbane—I smelled it on the trail, a dry, bitter ghost beneath the pine, the exact smell of the powder the pack uses to keep young wolves from shifting in crowded rooms.

Maren is quiet for a long moment. Then she says, "Roen has been meeting with Seraphina's personal attendant for weeks. Private meetings, after dark, away from the pack house."

I let that land. I file it.

"Say nothing," I tell her. "Not one word."

She nods.

---

At dawn I go to my Omega duties as though I spent the night in my own bed. I do not limp in front of Seraphina.

The effort of not limping costs more than the injury. Every step is a negotiation between what my body needs and what my pride will allow. But I do it. I scrub the kitchen floor, carry the buckets, stand straight when Seraphina walks past, and let her see nothing.

She is watching for the break. She wants to see me fall apart.

I do not give her the satisfaction.

---

Every morning before Omega duties, in the blind corner of the training grounds where the wall casts a shadow no one cares about, I train my combat-dance.

It is the one thing that is entirely mine. A style I built over years, compensating for a wolf smaller than any Alpha's, designed to be fluid enough for ceremony and lethal enough to dismantle an opponent twice my size. I move through the sequences in the gray light, testing my splinted arm, finding the limit of what it can do.

I do not know she is watching.

I do not know that from the training-ground window, framed in the glass, Seraphina has been studying my footwork for two weeks.

---

The warrior trial comes at the end of the third week. A formal event, visiting Alphas in attendance, the best fighters of the pack demonstrating their skill for the assembled guests.

I am in the Omega section, standing at the back, when Seraphina takes the floor.

She moves into the first sequence and my blood goes cold.

The opening footwork—that weight shift I developed after the ambush, the pivot I use to compensate for a broken dominant shoulder in my left side. She executes it perfectly.

The second sequence. My signature counter, the one I built to turn a larger opponent's strength against them. She lands it clean.

The third. The transition I spent a year perfecting, the fluid turn that moves from ceremonial grace to combat in a single motion.

Every sequence. Every transition. Every detail.

The visiting Alphas applaud. Dominic watches from the head table with no expression. Seraphina finishes, breathes out, and smiles.

"A style I developed during my time studying in Europe," she says, warm and modest.

I stand in the Omega section and my mouth opens.

But I do not speak.

My splinted arm aches against my side. My wolf is silent in the hollow where she used to be. She took the hunt from me. She took my rank, my bond, my wolf. And now she is standing in front of everyone, wearing the one thing I created that belongs only to me, and the pack is applauding her for it.

I close my mouth.

I think about the six-week clock in my chest. I think about Roen and the wolfsbane and the meetings in the dark. I think about the ghost-thread that still has not fully severed, and what I know about the marrow that can never heal her again.

I press my thumb into the center of my opposite palm and I file everything away.

She does not get to see me break over this. Not her. Not him. Not any of them.

But I remember.
