Chapter 3

The night I died had no moon at all.

Elara met me at the edge of the tree line an hour before midnight, her hands raw from work I didn't ask her to describe. She told me only what I needed to know. A body, close enough in build. My pendant already fastened at its throat. A lock of my hair pressed into a cold fist. Enough of my scent worked into the skin and hair that no wolf's nose, not even Nathan's, would think to question it.

"It's done," she said. Her voice didn't shake, but her eyes did, somewhere behind the steadiness. "I'm sorry, Saoirse. I'm sorry it has to be this way."

"You didn't do this to me," I told her. "He did."

She touched my arm once, quick, like she was afraid of leaving a mark, and then she was gone into the dark, back toward the pack house and the life she still had to survive inside.

I walked the last mile to the cliff bridge alone.

I knew that path with my whole body. Four years of patrols had carved it into me — every root, every place the ground softened after rain. I had walked it exhausted, walked it bleeding once from a training gash Derek Shaw never should have cleared me for. I had walked it pregnant, three months along, my hand pressed low against my stomach, thinking about a nursery I would never build.

The bridge came up out of the dark like something that had always been waiting for me.

Below it, the river had gone hard and silver, ice skinned thin over black water that never fully froze at the center — everyone in Ironveil knew that, had known it since childhood. Fall through the crust there and the current took you fast, north, under the shelf ice, and did not give you back.

I stood at the rail for a long moment.

I thought about my mother's shawl on Adele's shoulders. I thought about the concrete floor, and the name I had given a pup no one else would ever say out loud. I thought about Nathan's face across that banquet hall — not cruel, not guilty, just irritated, like I was a scheduling conflict he hadn't planned for.

I did not think about staying.

I looked down once, at the black seam in the ice, and then I stepped off the rail and let the night take me.

The cold hit like a wall of iron. It punched the air out of my lungs before I even broke the surface, and for one endless second there was only the roar of water in my ears and the certainty that I had made a terrible mistake — and then an arm closed around my ribs, huge, impossibly warm against all that cold, and I was being hauled up and sideways and out, water sheeting off both of us as Elijah's partial-shifted form found the bank in three strides that shouldn't have been possible for anything human-shaped.

He set me down in the reeds and held my face in both hands, checking my eyes, my breathing, saying my name like a man confirming a fact he still didn't quite believe.

"I have you," he said. "I have you. It's done. It's over."

I didn't understand yet how true that was — not just for me, but for the pack I'd left behind.

I learned the rest weeks later, in a borrowed house two states away, from Elijah's own quiet voice in the dark. Nathan had been summoned to the morgue at dawn. He'd stood over the water-ravaged body with the Luna pendant still fastened at its throat, and something in him had simply broken open. His wolf's howl had gone through the pack house walls and kept going for three days straight — pack members covering their ears, pups crying in the nursery wing, warriors reporting that his Alpha aura had dimmed so visibly it was like watching a lamp turned down by degrees. He hadn't eaten. Hadn't shifted. Had sat with the pendant clenched in his fist and said nothing to anyone.

I felt nothing when Elijah told me. Not triumph. Not grief. Just a strange, distant quiet, like hearing about a stranger.

Three years later, morning light poured through the south-facing windows of my studio in a way that made the whole room feel underwater in gold instead of ice.

Cooper sighed and resettled across my bare feet, one ear twitching at a bird outside. I mixed a wash of violet for the lupine I was painting, humming something with no name, and thought of nothing at all except whether the petals needed more blue.

Elijah's arms had wrapped around me at dawn before he left for the council house, his mouth at my temple. "Stay in the light as long as you want," he'd said. "I'll be home before the ache starts."

It always did, some time after sunset — a dull throb behind my eyes that no healer in Silverpine had ever fully explained. But that was hours away yet.

For now there was only paint, and sun, and a dog snoring against my ankles, and a life that had never once, in three years, given me a reason to look behind me.
