Chapter 2

The pain started at 2:47 a.m.

I knew because I'd been staring at the ceiling for hours, counting the cracks in the plaster, when the first bone in my spine cracked.

It wasn't like anything I'd felt before. Not the dull ache of Callahan's fists. Not the soul-deep emptiness of the severed bond. This was heat—searing, impossible heat that flooded every vein at once.

I rolled off the cot and hit the floor. My hands pressed flat against the stone. My fingers curled. The bones in my wrists began to snap and reform.

I bit down on my lip hard enough to taste blood. I couldn't scream. The walls were thin. If anyone heard—

Another crack. My ribs this time. The heat intensified. My skin felt like it was splitting open from the inside.

My wolf surged upward.

Not the thin, fractured flicker I'd carried for three years. This was a tidal wave. Massive. Furious. Alive.

She exploded into existence.

The shift tore through me in seconds. Muscles reknitted. Bones reformed. My vision sharpened into wolf-sight—colors dimming, scents intensifying, every sound in the pack house suddenly crisp and distinct.

I stood on four legs.

The storage room was too small. My shoulders brushed both walls. I looked down at my paws—silver fur, luminous even in the darkness. My aura pulsed outward like a shockwave.

Somewhere in the hallway, something crashed to the floor.

I froze.

Footsteps. Running. Then a voice I recognized—Dara, one of the Omega cleaners. "Did you feel that?"

"Everyone felt that." A second voice. Male. Another Omega whose name I didn't know yet.

The door to the storage room rattled. I backed against the far wall, my heart hammering. If they saw me like this—if anyone saw what I'd become—

The door pushed open.

Dara stood in the doorway, a mop still clutched in one hand. Her eyes went wide. Behind her, the male Omega—young, maybe nineteen—stared over her shoulder.

Neither of them moved.

I held perfectly still. My wolf's instinct was to bare teeth, to assert dominance, to make them submit. I shoved the instinct down.

Dara's knees buckled. She caught herself against the doorframe. The male Omega dropped to one knee, his head bowing automatically.

My aura. They were feeling my aura.

I forced the shift back. It hurt almost as much as the first one—bones compressing, muscles shrinking, fur receding into skin. I gasped and fell forward onto my hands and knees, naked and shaking on the cold stone floor.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Then Dara stepped inside and closed the door behind her. She pulled off her work shirt and handed it to me without a word. I took it with trembling hands and pulled it over my head. It hung to mid-thigh.

"Dara," I said quietly. My voice was rough. "And you—"

"Micah," the male Omega said. He was still on one knee, his eyes fixed on the floor.

"Micah." I sat back against the wall and wrapped my arms around my knees. My whole body ached. "You can stand up."

He rose slowly, his gaze flicking to Dara as if asking permission.

Dara was staring at me. Not with fear exactly. Something closer to awe.

"That was…" She trailed off. "What was that?"

I pressed two fingers to the cold scar on my neck. The rejection mark. Dead and empty. But my wolf was alive now. Fully, completely alive.

"I don't know," I lied.

I knew exactly what it was. Lycan blood. The kind of wolf that shouldn't exist in a mid-rank pack like Ironridge. The kind of aura that could buckle knees and stop hearts.

Dara glanced at Micah, then back at me. "If anyone finds out—"

"They won't." I met her eyes. "Not unless you tell them."

Silence.

Dara had spent her entire life at the bottom of this pack. Used. Ignored. Occasionally worse. I'd seen the bruises she tried to hide under long sleeves. I'd seen the way she flinched when ranked wolves passed too close.

I could command her silence. My aura was strong enough now. One word in the right tone and she'd have no choice.

I didn't.

"I'm asking," I said quietly. "Not commanding. I'm asking you both to keep this between us. And I promise—when I leave this place, I'll make sure you're protected."

Dara's throat worked. She looked at Micah again. He nodded slightly.

"Okay," Dara whispered. "Okay."

Micah echoed her. "We won't say anything."

I believed them. Not because I'd forced their loyalty. Because I'd asked for it.

They left a few minutes later, Dara retrieving her shirt from the hallway where she'd dropped it. The door clicked shut. I was alone again.

I stood slowly and moved to the small, cracked mirror mounted on the wall. My reflection stared back—same face, same dark hair, same too-thin frame from three years of rationed meals.

But my eyes were different. Brighter. Sharper.

I pressed my fingers to the rejection mark one more time.

Callahan had severed the bond. He'd taken my wolf—or so he thought. He'd stepped over my body without looking down.

I wrapped the performance back around myself like armor. Grieving. Dutiful. Broken.

Let him think I was still that girl on the floor.

The next morning, I knocked on Callahan's door at exactly seven a.m.

"Come in," Etta's voice called.

I pushed the door open. The Alpha's quarters were massive—floor-to-ceiling windows, heavy furniture, a bed large enough for three people. Callahan lay in the center of it, propped up on pillows. His legs were motionless under the blankets. His face was gray.

Etta stood beside the bed, her arms crossed. She looked me over with the same cool assessment she always had.

"You'll handle his morning routine," she said. "Bathing, dressing, meals. I've written out the schedule."

She handed me a sheet of paper. I took it without looking at it.

"Yes, ma'am," I said quietly.

Etta's gaze lingered on me for a moment. Then she turned and left, the door closing behind her with a soft click.

I was alone with Callahan.

He watched me from the bed. His right hand closed into a fist at his side—the same tell I'd catalogued for three years. Anger. Frustration. Hatred.

"Alyssa," he said. His voice was rough. Effortful. The Alpha tone was gone entirely. "Get out."

I didn't move.

I walked to the side of the bed and set the schedule on the nightstand. Then I picked up the glass of water sitting there and held it out to him.

"You need to drink," I said.

His jaw clenched. "I said get out."

I pressed two fingers briefly to my neck scar. Grounding myself. Reminding myself why I was here.

Then I leaned forward and placed the glass in his hand.

"Drink," I repeated. Calm. Even. No command in my voice. Just fact.

He stared at me. His hand trembled slightly as he raised the glass to his lips.

I straightened and moved to the window, giving him space. Outside, the pack grounds stretched out under gray morning light. Wolves moving between buildings. Normal. Routine.

Behind me, I heard Callahan set the glass down.

"I don't need you," he said.

"I know," I replied.

I turned back to face him. His eyes were locked on mine. Searching for something. Weakness, maybe. Or defiance.

He wouldn't find either.

I adjusted the pillow behind his head with careful, practiced hands.

"I'll be back in an hour with breakfast," I said.

Then I walked out and closed the door behind me.

In the hallway, I paused. Pressed my fingers to the scar again.

This was the beginning.

Not of his destruction. That had already started the night he rejected me.

This was the beginning of him understanding it.
