Chapter 1

The bond broke something inside me at 10:47 on a Thursday morning, the exact moment Dean's boot heel struck stone three paces behind my left shoulder.

I was on my knees in the main hall, scrubbing. My scarred right hand gripped the brush awkwardly, the last two fingers curled in their permanent half-fist. Cold water soaked through my pants. The floor smelled like lye and old smoke.

"Alexandra."

Dean's voice carried that edge I'd learned to recognize over seven years — the one that meant an audience was watching. I didn't look up. I kept scrubbing, dragging the brush in slow circles over stone that was already clean.

Footsteps. Two sets. His boots and lighter heels beside them.

"Look at me when your Alpha addresses you."

The Alpha tone slammed into my chest like a fist through the residual mate bond — that one-sided leash he'd kept open all these years. Not love. Control. My wolf stirred faintly in the chemical darkness Aubrey had locked her in, a flicker of heat that hurt more than it helped.

I raised my head.

Dean stood five feet away with Aubrey Graves on his arm. His chosen Luna. She wore a cream dress that probably cost more than I'd seen in a year, and her hand rested on his forearm like she owned it. Maybe she did. Her scent — warm amber and pine, trustworthy and pack-loyal — layered over his so completely I couldn't find his underneath.

She smiled at me. Not cruel. Worse. Pleasant.

"Press your forehead to the floor," Dean said. His voice was flat. "Before your Luna."

The Alpha tone flared again, hotter this time, dragging the command through the bond and into my bones. My body moved before I could think. Forehead to stone. Cold bit into my skin. My scarred right hand flattened beside my face, knuckles pressing into the wet floor.

"Good," Aubrey murmured. She stepped forward. I heard the click of her heel, then felt the slight pressure as she stepped over me. Not on me. Just over. Like I was part of the floor.

They kept walking. I stayed down until their footsteps faded into the east wing. Then I pushed myself up slowly, water dripping from my hands.

No one in the hall looked at me. Three Delta wolves stood near the staircase, pretending to discuss patrol schedules. A young Omega I didn't know carried linens past without meeting my eyes.

I picked up the brush and kept scrubbing.

That evening, Dean called a pack assembly.

I stood in the back row with the other Omegas, pressed between a man who smelled like kitchen grease and a woman whose wolf had never awakened. The hall was packed. Every ranked wolf in the Ironveil Pack had turned out — Betas, Gammas, Deltas, all the way up to Dean at the podium with Aubrey beside him, her Luna mark gleaming on her neck under the lights.

Dean held up a piece of paper. Even from the back, I recognized the Council seal.

"This," he said, "is an application to the Healer Rehabilitation Program. Submitted by Alexandra Wren."

My left thumb pressed hard against my scarred knuckles. Grounding. The way Silas had taught me years ago, when I still had a right hand that worked and a future that made sense.

Aubrey leaned close to Dean, whispered something I couldn't hear. He nodded.

"The Council," Dean continued, "in their infinite bureaucratic wisdom, approved this application and forwarded it to my desk for final pack endorsement." He paused. The hall was silent. "I want every wolf here to understand what we're discussing. This is a request from a wolfless Omega — a she-wolf who abandoned her pack during a rogue raid, who fled while real wolves burned — to be recognized as a Healer."

He tore the paper in half.

The sound was soft. It shouldn't have carried. But in that silence, it did.

He tore it again. And again. Slowly. Deliberately. Pieces fluttered to the floor like snow.

"No wolfless coward," Dean said, "will ever wear a Healer's mark in my pack."

I walked forward.

The crowd parted. No one spoke. I felt their eyes on me — some pitying, some contemptuous, most just blank. I reached the podium, bent, and picked up the first piece with my left hand. Then the second. Then the third.

My right hand trembled. I couldn't stop it. The nerve damage made the fingers twitch when I was tired or cold or — like now — holding onto composure by a thread thinner than the torn paper in my palm.

I collected every piece. Seventeen in total. I counted.

Dean watched me the whole time. So did Aubrey. So did three hundred wolves.

When I had them all, I straightened, turned, and walked back through the silent crowd. No one stopped me. No one looked away from Dean.

I made it to my quarters before my knees gave out.

The room was eight feet by ten, tucked in the basement next to the furnace. One cot, one chair, one narrow window at ground level that showed nothing but dirt and dead grass. I spread the torn pieces across the cot and fit them together like a puzzle, working by the light of a single bulb.

The application reformed slowly. Council seal. My name. The program director's signature.

Evidence.

I'd been collecting it for seven years. Every cruelty. Every degradation. Every witness. I didn't know what I'd do with it yet. But I knew I'd need it.

Selene stirred in my chest — my wolf, locked in chemical silence for so long I'd almost forgotten what her presence felt like. Not a voice. Just warmth. Faint. Barely there.

I pressed my left thumb against my scarred knuckles and breathed.

Through the thin wall, I heard voices. Aubrey's, low and administrative. Then Marcus Hale, the pack's current Healer, responding.

"Increase the concentration," Aubrey said. "Before the banquet. I want it in the kitchen rations by morning."

"How much?"

"Enough that she won't notice until it's too late."

Wolfsbane. She was talking about wolfsbane.

I folded the reconstructed application carefully and tucked it into my waistband. Then I lay back on the cot and stared at the ceiling.

Selene's warmth pulsed once, faint but real.

I stopped eating the communal rations the next morning.
