Chapter 1

At 9:42 on a Saturday night, my mate bond turned to ice.

I stood on the raised stage of the banquet hall in a floor-length emerald Luna gown, my hand resting near Lorenzo’s waist. Below us, three hundred wolves of the Shadowvale Pack raised their glasses, celebrating his miraculous recovery. Three years of brewing foul antidotes, three years of wiping black blood from his chin while he convulsed through wolfsbane fevers—it had all led to this victory.

Then Lorenzo took the microphone, stepped away from me, and looked straight at Sutton Kelly.

Sutton sat at the front table in a shimmering silver slip dress, her throat bare, her lips curved into a slow smile.

"My restored strength," Lorenzo’s voice boomed through the speakers, deep and velvet, "does not belong to the past. It belongs to the future. It belongs to Sutton Kelly. Her jasmine scent calls to me more than fate itself."

The hall dropped into dead silence.

Through our live mate bond, a sickening jolt hit my chest. It wasn't just his words. I physically felt his inner wolf lunge across the invisible link, panting and eager, rubbing against Sutton’s jasmine aura while violently shoving mine into the dark. The mate mark on my collarbone went numb, then flared with an agonizing chill, like a door slamming shut in an empty room.

My breath caught. A sharp, burning sting ripped through my core, but I refused to let tears fall. Not in front of three hundred watching eyes.

I stepped across the stage.

Lorenzo turned, his jaw set, expecting tears. He expected me to crumble.

Instead, I put the full weight of my shoulder into my right hand and whipped it across his face.

*SLAP!*

The crack echoed off the marble pillars like a gunshot.

Lorenzo’s head snapped sideways. The microphone squealed against the podium as he caught his balance. A dark red handprint bloomed across his golden skin, his amber Alpha eyes flaring with shock.

I didn't utter a single syllable. I didn't give him the dignity of an argument. I spun on my heel and walked toward the double doors at the far end of the hall.

"I, Alpha Lorenzo of Shadowvale," his roar exploded behind me, shaking the chandeliers, "reject you—"

The opening words of the ritual slammed into my back like white-hot silver needles. A violent tremor tore down my spine, the brand on my neck smoking with phantom heat. My knees nearly buckled. The pain ripped the air straight out of my lungs.

I stumbled for half a second. Then I straightened my back, lifted my chin, and kept walking.

He didn't finish the vow.

The heavy oak doors swung open under my hands. I walked out into the corridor, my heels clicking evenly against the stone, never once looking back.

Leaving a rejection ritual half-spoken was a special kind of cruelty. By speaking only the first sentence, Lorenzo had cracked the bond without breaking it. All night, locked inside the master bedroom stripped bare of his clothes and cologne, I suffered the biological fallout.

Every time his wolf brushed against Sutton downstairs, a dirty, phantom heat scraped my skin. Every drop of smug satisfaction running through his veins echoed inside mine. My mate mark throbbed red and angry, leaking cold sweat.

I sat on the floor, pressing my spine flat against the locked bedroom door, staring into the darkness.

Then, deep in the quiet corners of my mind, a presence shifted.

It wasn't frantic. It didn't whimper. It was an older, deeper sound—a low, resonant vibration that made the hair on my arms stand up.

*He left the bond open on purpose,* my wolf’s voice echoed in my head, cool and steady as deep water. *He wants you to crawl. He will make you beg him to finish it. Do not beg.*

"I’d rather die," I whispered to the empty room.

I didn't sleep a single minute.

At dawn, I washed the phantom stench of jasmine off my skin, pulled my hair into a tight knot, and took the elevator down to the pack armory.

My Luna access card still worked. The digital pad beeped green, and the heavy vault door hissed open.

Inside sat three years of my life.

Rows of binders filled with handwritten synthesis notes. Ingredient ledgers tracking rare wolfsbane strains. Exact dosage charts calibrated specifically to Lorenzo’s blood type. Nobody in Shadowvale knew how to brew the stabilizing tonic that kept the remaining poison dormant in his marrow. Not the pack healers. Not the elders. Only me.

Without these formulas, if the dormant toxin flared up again, his wolf would starve from the inside out.

I took every paper file from the shelves. I plugged a drive into the terminal and deleted the local archives, wiping the backups until the screen blinked blank.

I slipped the thick bundle of files beneath my heavy leather coat, zipped it to my chin, and walked out of the vault.

"You're up early," a voice said from the shadows of the corridor.

Beta Rocco stepped away from the concrete wall. He wore his tactical gear, his dark eyes immediately dropping to the slight bulk beneath my coat. He didn't ask questions. He didn't look at my inflamed mate mark.

"Lorenzo is in the council wing with Sutton," Rocco said, keeping his voice low. "Vance is already drafting the paperwork to strip your Luna status before lunch."

I pulled the heavy stack of documents from my coat and shoved them firmly into Rocco’s chest.

"Keep these somewhere Lorenzo will never find them," I said.

Rocco’s large hands clamped around the paper. His jaw tightened as he realized what they were.

Before he could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the iron staircase nearby. Delta Vance’s voice carried around the corner, sharp and mocking.

"The locksmith is upstairs right now, Alpha. Her bags will be on the curb before she even wakes up."
