Chapter 3

Whitney closed the boutique at six. She locked the door and stood on the sidewalk for a long moment, phone in her hand. The streetlights were just coming on. The city noise felt distant.

She pulled up Ronan's number. She'd gotten it from the hospital directory three days ago. She hadn't decided if she would use it.

She decided now.

The text was short: *We need to talk. Tomorrow, 7 AM. Bluebird Café on Pine.*

She didn't wait for a response. She put the phone in her pocket and walked to her car.

---

The café was empty when Whitney arrived. She ordered black coffee and sat at the corner table with her back to the wall. Ronan came in at seven sharp. He looked like he hadn't slept. His shirt was pressed but his eyes were shadowed.

He sat down across from her without ordering.

"Why am I here," he said.

Whitney wrapped both hands around her cup. "Because you went through Astrid's medical records. Because you showed up at her store. Because you think you deserve answers."

"I do."

"You don't." She met his eyes. "But I'm going to give them to you anyway."

He waited.

"Three years ago," Whitney said, "Astrid found out you were finalizing your engagement to Tiffany Bradley. She knew she was never going to be anything but your secret. So she made a choice."

Ronan's jaw tightened. "She lied."

"She gave you an exit." Whitney's voice was calm. Steady. "She told you she cheated. She told you she lost another man's baby. She handed you a reason to hate her so you could walk away clean. So you wouldn't have to feel guilty. So you could marry Tiffany and tell yourself she was the one who betrayed you."

The words hung in the air.

"She loved you enough to make herself the villain," Whitney said. "And you beat her for it."

Ronan flinched. "I didn't know—"

"You didn't ask." Whitney leaned forward. "You didn't stop. You didn't question it. You just believed the worst thing she could possibly say about herself because it was easier than admitting you were never going to choose her."

His hands were shaking. He pressed them flat on the table.

"That's not all," Whitney said quietly.

Ronan looked up.

"The same day you threw her out of your apartment—the same day she left bleeding—Tiffany Bradley found her on the street."

She watched his face. Watched the exact moment the words landed.

"Tiffany walked up to her in broad daylight. In front of people. And she spat on her face."

Ronan went very still.

"She called her trash," Whitney continued. "She told her to stay away from you. She made sure everyone on that block saw it. And then she walked away."

Ronan's breathing changed. Short. Shallow.

"Astrid didn't fight back," Whitney said. "She didn't say a word. She just stood there. And then she came to my apartment and asked if she could stay the night."

She paused.

"That was the last time she cried."

Ronan's head dropped into his hands. His shoulders shook. The sound that came out of him was raw. Broken.

Whitney didn't move. She watched him fall apart across the table and felt nothing but the cold, clean satisfaction of a truth finally delivered.

When he looked up, his face was wet. "Where is she."

"You don't get to know that."

"Whitney—"

"You don't get to know," she said again. "You don't get to fix this. You don't get to apologize your way back into her life. You had her. You kept her hidden. You hit her. And your fiancée spat on her. You don't get anything else."

She stood. Dropped a ten on the table for the coffee.

"Stay away from her, Ronan."

She walked out.

---

Ronan sat at the table for twenty minutes. The café filled with morning customers. No one looked at him.

He drove to Tiffany's parents' house. The mayor's residence. White columns. Manicured lawn. Security gate.

The housekeeper let him in.

Tiffany was in the sitting room, scrolling through her phone. She looked up when he walked in. Smiled. "Ronan. I wasn't expecting you."

"Did you spit on Astrid Parker."

The smile faded. She set the phone down. "Excuse me?"

"Three years ago. On the street. Did you spit on her."

Tiffany's face went smooth. Careful. "I don't remember."

"Yes, you do."

She stood. Crossed her arms. "Fine. Yes. I did."

The room tilted.

"She was a nobody, Ronan." Tiffany's voice was calm. Matter-of-fact. "She was sleeping with my fiancé. She needed to understand where she stood."

"She was a person."

"She was an embarrassment." Tiffany stepped closer. "You were about to marry me. She had no place in your life. I made that clear."

Ronan stared at her. At the woman he had been engaged to for three years. At the face he had kissed. The hand he had held at charity events.

He didn't recognize her.

"We're done," he said quietly.

Tiffany blinked. "What?"

"The engagement. It's over."

Her expression shifted. Hardened. "You're not serious."

"I am."

"Because of her?" Tiffany's voice rose. "Because of some girl you used to sleep with? Ronan, don't be ridiculous."

"You spat on her."

"So what?" Tiffany's eyes flashed. "She deserved it. She was nothing. She is nothing."

Ronan turned and walked to the door.

"If you leave," Tiffany called after him, "you'll regret it. My father—"

"I don't care."

He walked out.

The door closed behind him with a soft, final click.
