Chapter 1

I stood outside Ethan's luxury apartment door, the familiar weight of takeout bags in my hands. Three years of marriage, and this was still our routine—me bringing food to his place rather than us sharing a home together. The hallway's recessed lighting cast soft shadows across the polished marble floor as I juggled the bags to find my key.

Just as I was about to unlock the door, I heard Ethan's voice from inside, loud and animated. He must be on a team call. I paused, not wanting to interrupt an important strategy session. That's when I caught fragments of his conversation.

"Yeah, man, she's the ultimate 冤种," Ethan laughed, the Mandarin word for 'fool' or 'sucker' slipping easily from his lips. "Three million in donations over three years, and she still thinks I'm madly in love with her."

My hand froze on the key. The paper bags crinkled as my grip tightened involuntarily.

"Dude, you're living the dream," came another voice through what must have been his computer speakers. "Secret wife bankrolling your life while you keep the fangirls thinking you're single."

"Business arrangement of the century," Ethan replied, his voice carrying that smug tone I'd always chosen to ignore. "And the best part? I just used her money to buy a fifty-thousand-dollar diamond ring."

The world seemed to tilt beneath my feet. I leaned against the wall for support, careful not to make a sound.

"For your sugar mama?" someone on the call asked.

Ethan's laughter cut through me like glass. "Hell no. It's for someone special. Someone who actually deserves it."

My chest constricted as if all the air had been sucked from the hallway. I'd spent years convincing myself that our secret marriage was to protect his career, that the public image he maintained was just business. I'd told myself that behind closed doors, what we had was real.

But I'd been lying to myself all along.

I don't know how long I stood there, food growing cold in my hands, as Ethan continued to joke about his "arrangement" with his teammates. Eventually, I heard the call ending. Taking a deep breath, I unlocked the door and stepped inside.

Ethan was lounging on his Italian leather sofa, feet propped up on the glass coffee table I'd bought him last Christmas. He barely looked up from his phone as I entered.

"Brought dinner," I said, my voice surprisingly steady despite the hurricane raging inside me.

"Just leave it on the counter," he replied dismissively. "I've got another call in twenty minutes."

I set the bags down but didn't move toward the door as I usually would. Instead, I stood my ground, heart hammering against my ribs.

"Who's the ring for, Ethan?"

His head snapped up, eyes narrowing as they met mine. For a moment, surprise flickered across his face before it settled back into practiced nonchalance.

"What ring?"

"The fifty-thousand-dollar diamond ring you bought with my money. The one for 'someone special.'" My voice didn't waver, though my hands were trembling at my sides.

Ethan set his phone down slowly, his expression hardening. "You were eavesdropping on me?"

"Who is she?" I pressed, ignoring his attempt to flip the script.

He stood up, towering over me with that intimidating presence that had once made my heart race for entirely different reasons. "Look, Mia, let's not pretend our arrangement is something it's not. You knew what this was from the beginning."

"Did I?" The words felt like acid on my tongue. "Because I thought I was your wife, not your personal ATM."

"Don't be dramatic," he scoffed. "We both benefit from this setup. You get to play house with an esports champion, and I get financial support for my career. It's business."

"And the ring?" I insisted, refusing to be derailed.

He shrugged, cold and distant. "My personal life is my business. Without me, what are you? Just another lonely rich girl trying to buy affection."

His words struck like physical blows. Three years of love, support, and sacrifice reduced to a transaction. Three million dollars spent not on us, but on maintaining the illusion of us while he built a real relationship with someone else.

I turned away, unable to look at him anymore, the truth of our marriage finally clear. As I reached for the door, a wave of nausea washed over me. I'd been feeling unwell for days, but had dismissed it as stress.

Now, as I fled Ethan's apartment with tears blurring my vision, I wondered if it might be something else entirely.
