Chapter 5

The first frame hit the screen like a fist.

Me. Three years younger, but a lifetime more broken. My wrists bound to the back of a metal chair with zip ties, the plastic cutting deep enough to leave the scars I now hid beneath silk. My left eye was swollen nearly shut. A gash along my jaw had bled freely down my neck, soaking the collar of a blouse that had been torn at the shoulder. The room behind me—Victor Sterling's private facility in the Meatpacking District, though no one here would ever know that—was concrete and shadow and a single hanging bulb that swung slightly, as though even the light was afraid.

I had been there for forty-one hours. Protecting his company. Protecting his secrets.

Protecting *him*.

The surround-sound speakers pumped the audio through the pavilion at full volume. My own voice, raw and fractured, filled the Hamptons air between the cherry blossoms and the crystal chandeliers. I heard myself beg. I heard myself scream. The sound crawled beneath my skin and found every nerve ending still tender from the memory.

Isabelle snatched the officiant's microphone from the podium.

"There she is, Manhattan," she announced, her voice ringing with triumphant, crystalline cruelty. She gestured toward the screen with a sweeping arm, the diamonds at her throat scattering light like broken glass. "Your uninvited guest. Look at her. Clearly unstable. Clearly dangerous. This woman has a documented history of violent incidents, psychological breaks, and disturbing obsessions with powerful men she cannot have." She paused, letting a sympathetic tremor color her voice for the cameras. "We tried to handle this quietly. We truly did. But she forced our hand. For the safety of every person here today, you deserve to know the truth about who is standing among you."

The crowd erupted.

Gasps first, then the whispers, cascading through the white Chiavari chairs like a stone dropped into still water. A woman in Chanel clutched her husband's arm. Julian Montgomery's cameraman zoomed in on the screen, then swung the lens back to my face, hunting for the collapse, for the tears, for the moment I shattered into something usable.

Kaylee Ward let out a shriek of delighted, drunken laughter from the front row, nearly spilling her fresh glass of champagne down the front of her dress. "I *told* you she was insane! Somebody call Bellevue!"

I didn't move.

I stood in the center of it all—the laughter, the flashing cameras, the forty-one hours of my worst nightmare projected in 4K above an altar dressed with flowers I had paid for—and I turned my head slowly toward my husband.

Aurelio was watching the screen.

Not me. The screen. His jaw was set, his expression arranged into the careful, practiced blankness of a man managing optics. There was no flinch. No flicker of the guilt that should have gutted him. The man who had held me in a hospital bed afterward, who had pressed his lips to my hair and whispered *you saved us, Vanessa, you saved everything*—that man had apparently been a character he'd retired when the stock price recovered.

The phantom ache in my wrists became a white-hot burn.

I had bled in a concrete room for *this*. For the cherry blossoms. For the chandeliers. For the empire that was currently funding Isabelle Ward's six-figure gown. I had screamed into a gag so that Aurelio Davis could stand on a marble altar in front of paparazzi and forget my name.

Something in my chest didn't break.

It simply stopped.

Like a furnace running out of fuel—no explosion, no drama. Just the absence of heat where heat had always been. The last warm, desperate fragment of the woman who had rushed from her mother's hospice room with hope still flickering in her throat went quiet and dark.

What remained was architecture. Clean lines. Absolute precision.

I reached into my clutch. My fingers bypassed the folded marriage certificate and closed around my phone. The screen lit up in my palm, and I began to tap.

Index finger. Slow. Deliberate. A rhythm only one person in the world was waiting for.

*Tap.*

Kenji Fisher, who was sitting in a black car precisely four minutes from the estate's service entrance, would feel his encrypted tablet vibrate once.

*Tap.*

The offshore accounts. The Cayman shells. The SEC filing that had been sealed in a digital vault for eleven months, waiting for exactly this moment.

*Tap.*

Aurelio's empire—my empire, the one I had built from a Brooklyn apartment on four hours of sleep and sheer, relentless genius—was about to be returned to its rightful architect. Piece by catastrophic piece.

I lowered the phone.

On the screen above the altar, the bound, bleeding version of me was still screaming.

I looked up at her calmly.

*I'm sorry it took me this long.*
