Chapter 2

The Hamptons estate sprawled before me like a kingdom built on lies. As my taxi pulled up to the security checkpoint, I could see the extent of Aurelio's extravagance—crystal chandeliers hanging from trees, imported cherry blossoms creating a pink canopy over the garden, and ice sculptures that probably cost more than most people's homes. My simple silk blouse and slacks felt woefully inadequate among the sea of designer gowns and custom tuxedos, but I clutched my clutch tighter, feeling the outline of our marriage certificate through the leather. That piece of paper was my armor, my truth, my weapon.

The security guard at the gate frowned at my lack of invitation. "Miss, this is a private event. You need to leave."

I met his eyes, my voice steady despite the rage and grief warring inside me. "I'm Vanessa Hughes. I'm here to see my husband."

His expression flickered with recognition, then confusion. "Your husband? There must be some mistake. Mr. Davis is about to marry Ms. Ward."

"I know. That's why I'm here."

He radioed to someone inside, and after a tense moment, the gates swung open. I didn't know if it was my name or my confidence that had convinced them, but I was in.

The closer I got to the main event, the more my heart shattered. A string quartet played softly as waiters in crisp white uniforms circulated with champagne. Women draped in diamonds whispered behind manicured hands, and men in watches worth more than cars clapped each other on the back. This was Aurelio's world—the one he'd kept me hidden from for three years.

I spotted Isabelle near the altar, resplendent in a gown that probably cost six figures, her blonde hair arranged in an elegant updo adorned with pearl pins. She was laughing, radiant, the perfect bride in a perfect setting. My stomach twisted as I watched her hand rest possessively on Aurelio's arm.

Then I saw him. My husband. The man I'd built an empire for. He stood tall and commanding in a suit that fit him like a second skin, his dark hair perfectly styled, his smile dazzling for the cameras. He looked like he belonged in a magazine spread, not in a hospice room holding my mother's frail hand.

I moved forward with purpose, weaving between clusters of New York's elite. Conversations faltered as I passed, replaced by sharp intakes of breath and hurried whispers. "Isn't that...?" "What is she doing here?" "Oh my God, is that the crazy ex?"

The music swelled as I reached the edge of the pavilion. The officiant was beginning the ceremony, his voice carrying across the hushed crowd. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today..."

I stepped into the aisle.

Time seemed to slow. Hundreds of faces turned toward me, their expressions morphing from confusion to shock. The string quartet faltered, then stopped. A photographer's flash captured the moment—me, standing alone in the center of a $10 million lie.

I walked forward, my heels clicking against the marble path. The sound echoed in the sudden silence, each step bringing me closer to the man who had betrayed me when I needed him most.

Aurelio's eyes found mine. For a fraction of a second, I saw something flicker there—recognition, perhaps even fear. But it vanished, replaced by cold calculation as he realized who I was and what I was doing.

I stopped before him, close enough to see the gold flecks in his eyes, close enough to smell his expensive cologne. "Aurelio," I said, my voice soft but clear in the silence. "My mother is dying. She needs to see you. Please, come with me. Now."

His jaw tightened. I watched his fingers move to his cufflinks, adjusting them with nervous precision. Then he smiled—that public smile I'd come to hate—and raised his voice for the benefit of the crowd.

"I'm sorry, but I don't know who you are," he said, his tone dripping with condescension. "Security, please remove this woman. She must be some kind of deranged stalker. How dare she interrupt such a beautiful ceremony?"
