Chapter 4

Two days after the gala, Adalyn made her next move.

She didn’t just whisper to her friends. She leaked it everywhere.

First came the vague Instagram posts. Photos of ultrasound printouts next to designer baby booties. Then came an exclusive quote in a Manhattan gossip column. Adalyn framed their affair as a grand romance. She called herself the woman who "finally brought joy back into Ryan’s cold life."

She was pregnant.

Ryan didn’t question a thing. His massive ego ate it right up. At fifty-two, he believed his virility was unmatched.

By noon, my phone pinged with an email from Jocelyn. Attached was a formal legal proposal sent by Ryan’s attorney.

I took a cab straight to Midtown.

Kingston’s office was on the fifty-second floor. The room was large, quiet, and modern. Floor-to-ceiling glass overlooked the concrete canyons below. Kingston stood behind a clean desk, a dark cup of coffee in hand.

I printed the document in the lobby and carried it into his office. I sat across from him and set the paper flat on the dark wood.

"Read it," I said.

Kingston skimmed the page. His jaw clenched tight.

Ryan was offering me a deal. If I agreed to drop all claims on his corporate shares, he would let me keep the Tribeca penthouse. But there was a condition. A sick, twisted condition.

Adalyn would carry the baby to term. Once the child was born, I would sign as the legal mother. I would raise the baby in the penthouse. Ryan called it a "practical solution to keep the Williamson name spotless." He wanted a young mistress, a new child, and his dutiful older wife to clean up the mess.

I looked at Kingston. My voice didn't waver.

"He wants me to raise his mistress's baby."

Kingston set his coffee down. He didn’t yell. He didn’t look shocked. He just held my gaze with those deep hazel eyes.

Then he reached into a drawer. Without a single word, he slid a thick blue folder across the desk.

"Open it," Kingston said quietly.

I pulled the tab and opened the file.

Inside was an official medical file from Mount Sinai Hospital. There was Ryan’s full name, his date of birth, and his signature. It was an operative report for a bilateral vasectomy.

Dated five years ago.

I stared at the black ink. I read the date three times.

Five years ago, Ryan had gone on a solo "golf trip" to Florida for four days. He had actually booked an appointment downtown and made sure he could never have children again. He had never told me.

And he certainly hadn't told Adalyn.

I looked up from the paper. My heart thumped hard, not with fear, but with pure, sharp triumph.

For the first time since this nightmare started, a genuine smile broke across my face.

Kingston watched me. The corners of his mouth lifted.

"She’s carrying a ghost’s child," I whispered.

"It gets better," Kingston said.

He tapped the screen of his laptop and turned it toward me.

"When Adalyn’s announcement hit the press, my team started pulling surveillance," Kingston explained. "If Ryan is sterile, someone else had to be the father. We checked the window of conception. Exactly seven weeks ago."

A video started playing on the monitor.

It was high-resolution security footage from a boutique loft building in Soho. The timestamp showed a Tuesday night last month.

Adalyn walked into the lobby wearing a baseball cap and dark sunglasses. A tall, shirtless male model with tattoos opened the elevator for her.

Kingston clicked to another clip. Wednesday afternoon. Same lobby. A different man, blond and athletic, walked out with his arm around Adalyn’s waist.

Kingston clicked a third time. Friday night. A third man, dark-haired and handsome, kissed her against the brick wall before leading her upstairs.

Three different men in seven days.

"She wasn't looking for love," Kingston said dryly. "She was hunting for DNA. She needed a positive pregnancy test, and she needed it fast. Once she got it, she handed the bill to Ryan."

I watched the screen. My eyes followed Adalyn’s smug little face as she giggled into the camera.

She thought she had trapped a real estate mogul. She thought she had secured a lifetime of Williamson wealth. She had paraded my grandmother’s emerald in public, thinking she had already won.

She had no idea she was walking right off a cliff.

I closed Ryan’s vasectomy file with a soft snap.

"When is she celebrating?" I asked.

"Next Thursday," Kingston replied. He leaned back in his chair, folding his hands. "She booked the entire rooftop lounge at the St. Regis. An extravagant baby shower. Two hundred guests. Ryan’s investors, the press, and your daughter’s friends."

"Good," I said.

I picked up the blue folder and held it against my chest.

"Don't leak anything to the press," I told Kingston. "Don't send it to Ryan's lawyers. I don't want a quiet settlement in a conference room."

Kingston’s eyes shone with quiet pride. "What do you want to do, Hannah?"

"I want an invitation to that party," I said, my voice sweet and lethal. "I'm going to congratulate them in person."
