Chapter 1

I came home two days early from my business trip to Chicago.

Our Tribeca penthouse was dead quiet. The afternoon sun cut across the polished wood floors. I set my suitcase by the door and kicked off my heels. On the marble kitchen island, Ryan’s phone lit up.

It buzzed once. Then again.

I walked over and picked it up. The screen wasn’t locked. A preview popped up: *Can’t wait for tonight, baby.*

The contact name was Adalyn Fox.

Adalyn was twenty-three. She was my daughter Everleigh’s best friend from college. She spent summers at our Hamptons house. I had made her pancakes in our kitchen.

My hands didn't shake. I tapped the thread.

For forty-five minutes, I stood by the counter and scrolled. There were months of messages. Intimate photos. Raw voice notes. Halfway down, Ryan had texted her: *Don’t worry about Hannah. Hannah won’t notice, she never notices anything.*

I stared at the screen. I felt completely cold. No tears came. Twenty years of marriage, and that was what he thought of me. A blind ghost in his penthouse.

I put the phone down, grabbed my purse, and went straight to a family law office downtown. I paid for an emergency rush order.

By six in the evening, I was back on our sofa. The papers were in Ryan's study.

The front door clicked open. Ryan walked in, tossing his keys into the silver dish. He smelled of expensive cologne and scotch.

"You're back early," he said, barely glancing at me as he loosened his tie.

"I saw your phone, Ryan."

He stopped. His face tightened, but he didn't look guilty. He just looked annoyed.

"You went through my things?" he snapped. "Hannah, it’s nothing. She’s just a kid having some fun. It doesn't mean anything."

"She's Everleigh's best friend."

Ryan scoffed and waved a dismissive hand. "So what? At least Adalyn looks at me with excitement. She actually appreciates me. You haven't done that in ten years."

"I want a divorce."

Ryan froze, then barked out a laugh. "A divorce? Be serious. You wouldn't survive six months without my money. You have no career. You have nothing."

He pulled out his phone again. "In fact, she’s having dinner with Everleigh down the street right now. Let’s bring her up. Let’s clear the air so you can get over this nonsense."

Ten minutes later, the private elevator chimed.

Adalyn stepped out. She wore a silk slip dress and a light coat. She didn't look ashamed. She walked into my living room with a bright, insolent smile.

"Hi, Hannah," she purred. She tilted her head and met my eyes. "Look, Ryan told me you're upset. But honestly? You should learn to share. Men like Ryan need more than one woman."

I didn't blink. I didn't scream.

I stood up, walked into the study, and picked up the fresh manila folder. I brought it back to the glass table. I sat down, uncapped my black pen, and signed my name on the bottom line.

I slid the documents across the table.

Ryan looked down. His smug smile vanished. "What is this?"

"Divorce petition," I said calmly. "Fifty percent of the marital assets. Keep the girl. I’ll keep my self-respect."

Adalyn’s smirk faltered. She looked at Ryan, her eyes suddenly wide. Neither of them had expected me to move this fast.

Before Ryan could shout, the elevator doors opened again. Everleigh rushed in, clutching her designer purse. Her face was flushed with panic.

She looked at the papers on the table, then at Ryan, and finally at me.

"Mom, what are you doing?" Everleigh shrieked. "Are you insane? You're divorcing Dad?"

"Everleigh, this is between your father and me," I said softly.

"No, it's not!" she yelled. Tears of anger welled in her eyes. "Do you know what people will say? My friends on the Upper East Side will laugh at me! You're ruining our family over nothing!"

My heart squeezed tight. "He slept with your best friend, Everleigh."

Everleigh glanced at Adalyn, then turned back to me with pure venom.

"I don't care!" she snapped. "You were never enough for Dad anyway! That’s why he found someone better!"

The room went dead silent.

The words hit me harder than any text message on Ryan's phone. My own daughter. The girl I had raised, protected, and poured my whole life into.

I looked at her. I didn't say a single word.

I stood up, turned around, and walked down the hallway to my private room. I stepped inside and shut the heavy oak door behind me, locking it with a quiet click. Their muffled voices faded away.

I walked over to the window. Outside, the Manhattan skyline glittered against the dark sky.

I took a slow, deep breath.

Then I picked up my phone and unlocked it. I scrolled down to a contact I hadn't dialed in twenty years.

*Kingston Hunt.*

My first love from NYU. The boy my parents made me leave for Ryan's money. Now a billionaire titan on Wall Street.

I pressed call.

It didn't even ring twice. He answered on the first ring.

"Hannah," his deep, steady voice came through the line.

He didn't sound surprised at all.
