Chapter 3

Nancy arrived at the bassinet like she owned it. She moved through the crowd with her chin up, wearing a gold necklace I'd paid for and a smile that didn't reach her eyes. She waved off a guest who was leaning over the baby. "I've got this, dear. Grandmother's privilege."

She pulled a bottle from her oversized handbag. Clear glass. Pink nipple. She set it on the table beside the bassinet and hummed while she unscrewed the cap. Something cheerful. Off-key.

I watched from across the room. My champagne glass was still half full. I hadn't touched it in ten minutes.

Nancy reached into her bag again. Her hand came out holding a small glass vial. She palmed it. Casual. Like she was checking her phone. She twisted the cap with her thumb. Tipped it over the bottle. A thin stream of clear liquid mixed with the formula.

She screwed the cap back on. Shook the bottle gently. Tested the temperature on her wrist. She smiled.

Then she lifted the baby out of the bassinet. Cradled it against her chest. Cooed something soft. The baby stirred. Nancy adjusted the blanket and brought the bottle to its mouth.

The infant latched on. Nancy rocked slightly. Side to side. She was humming again. Her eyes scanned the room, proud. Performative. She wanted people to see her. The devoted grandmother. The caretaker.

I turned to the woman beside me. She was talking about her son's college applications. I nodded. Asked a follow-up question. My voice was steady.

In my clutch, my phone was recording everything. Declan's team had cameras positioned at three angles. High-resolution. Timestamped. Admissible.

Nancy finished feeding the baby. She lifted it to her shoulder and patted its back. Burped it. Laid it back in the bassinet. Smoothed the blanket. Touched its cheek.

Then she walked away, humming.

I took another sip of champagne. It was warm now. I set the glass down on a passing tray.

Ridge's relatives were getting louder. His cousin Derek stood near the champagne tower, holding a flute up to the light like he was inspecting it for flaws. He wrinkled his nose. "This is supposed to be Dom? Tastes like grocery store stuff."

His wife laughed. Too loud. "Maybe she got the cheap version."

Ridge's aunt Barbara circled the room, critiquing everything. The flowers were too matchy. The cake was too small. The music was too stuffy. She stopped in front of a framed photo of Livia's nursery and sniffed. "Too modern. Babies need warmth. This looks like a hotel."

Ridge's uncle Carl cornered the event coordinator, demanding a private tour of the venue's wine cellar. She smiled nervously and promised to check with management.

I didn't move. I stood near the bar, watching.

Camilla appeared beside Ridge. She touched his arm. Leaned in close. Whispered something. Her face looked pale. Tired. She pressed her hand to her forehead.

Ridge's jaw tightened. He scanned the room. Found me.

He walked over. Fast. Purposeful. His smile was gone. He stopped in front of me, close enough that I could smell his cologne again. His voice was low but sharp. "You need to do something about this."

I looked at him. Didn't answer.

"Camilla's exhausted," he said. "She's been taking care of Livia around the clock. And my family flew all the way here to support us. The least you could do is make them feel welcome."

I tilted my head slightly. "They seem comfortable."

His eyes narrowed. "Don't do this. Not here."

He raised his voice. Just enough. Heads turned. Conversations paused. The string quartet kept playing, but the room felt quieter.

Ridge gestured toward Camilla, who was leaning against the catering table with one hand pressed to her temple. "She's been selfless. She's been there for us. For you. And you haven't even thanked her."

More people were looking now. His aunt Barbara. His cousin Derek. A few of my friends. The photographer lowered her camera.

Ridge's voice got louder. "Apologize to my family for the way you've treated them. And thank Camilla. Right now."

The room went still.

I looked at him. Really looked at him. At the man I'd married. The man I'd elevated. The man who wanted to kill our daughter.

I set my champagne glass down on the bar. The sound was sharp. Clear.

I turned to face the room.

Every guest. Every camera. Every Bennett relative.

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to.

"I'm filing for divorce," I said. "Effective immediately."

The string quartet stopped mid-note. Someone dropped a glass. It shattered on the marble floor.

Ridge's face went white. His mouth opened. No sound came out.

Camilla's hand tightened around the formula bottle she was holding. Her knuckles went bone-pale.

Nancy's mouth dropped open. Her gold necklace glittered under the chandelier.

I picked up my champagne glass again. Took a slow, deliberate sip.

Then I smiled.

The room stayed silent.

I turned and walked toward the exit. My heels clicked on the marble. Steady. Even.

Behind me, someone whispered. Then another voice. Then a rush of noise. Gasps. Murmurs. Shock.

I didn't look back.

I pushed open the glass doors and stepped into the sunlight.

My phone buzzed in my clutch. A message from Declan.

*Everything recorded. Legal team standing by.*

I deleted the message. Kept walking.

The performance was over.
