Chapter 3

The bruise on my hip was still a dark purple when Sunday came. It throbbed every time I took a step, a dull ache reminding me of the glass table at the club. I covered it with a long beige wool dress and put on a pair of flat shoes.

We drove to the Upper East Side for dinner.

My mother-in-law, Paula, lived in a four-story limestone townhouse. The dining room smelled like white lilies, lemon wax, and expensive butter. The mahogany table was set for four with heavy silver and gold-rimmed china.

Aspyn was already sitting there when we walked in.

She wore a soft lavender cashmere sweater that showed off her collarbones. She held a crystal wine glass by the stem and looked right up at Kian.

"Kian, you made it," she said softly.

"Aspyn dropped by to bring me some imported tea," Paula said, waving a manicured hand toward an empty seat. "I insisted she stay. After all, she’s practically family."

Nobody asked me if I minded. Nobody even looked at me.

I pulled out the chair across from Aspyn and sat down.

Throughout the meal, Paula barely addressed me. Her eyes were fixed on Aspyn. She asked about Aspyn's upcoming shoot in Paris. She praised her recent magazine cover. She nodded along to every word like Aspyn was a prized daughter.

"You have such a rare eye, darling," Paula said, slicing a piece of roast duck. "Class cannot be bought. You either have it or you don't."

"Thank you, Paula," Aspyn purred. "I just follow my instincts."

Then Paula’s gaze drifted across the table and landed on me. Her lips thinned into a tight, practiced smile.

"And what about you, Katalina?" Paula asked lightly. "Are you still doing that little architecture hobby?"

The maid cleared a plate beside me. The silver clinked against the porcelain in the quiet room.

"It wasn't a hobby, Paula," I said evenly. My voice was calm. "I have a master's degree. And I've actually been thinking about returning to professional work."

Paula chuckled. It was a soft, airy sound, completely devoid of warmth.

"That's sweet, dear," she said, tapping her napkin against her mouth. "Really, it is. But Kian needs someone focused on the home. A man with his health requires full attention. You can't be staying late in some dusty drafting office."

I looked at Kian.

He didn't defend me. He took a sip of his sparkling water, his eyes cold and detached. He looked bored, as if my entire life was an irrelevant detail he had to endure.

Across the linen cloth, Aspyn leaned toward him.

"Your collar is folded in, Kian," she murmured.

She reached across the corner of the table. Her manicured fingers brushed his throat. She smoothed the stiff fabric of his shirt, lingering against his neck with easy, practiced intimacy. It was the touch of a woman who felt she owned the space she was in.

Kian didn't pull away. He didn't flinch.

He tilted his head slightly, leaning into her fingers, letting her touch him right in front of his mother. Right in front of his wife.

Paula watched them and smiled with quiet approval.

A sharp coldness settled deep in my stomach. The humiliation didn't burn like fire anymore. It felt like ice. Clean and still.

I set my fork down.

"Excuse me," I said, standing up from the table. "I have a headache. I’m going home."

Paula frowned, clearly annoyed by the interruption. "We haven't served dessert yet, Katalina. Don't be rude."

Kian didn't even look up from his plate. "Let her go, Mother. She's just being dramatic again."

I didn't argue. I didn't wait for Kian to offer me a ride.

I picked up my coat from the front hall and walked out the heavy front door.

The night air was crisp. I took a yellow cab back down to our penthouse. The ride was silent. The city lights blurred outside the window like streaks of yellow and white paint.

Inside the apartment, the rooms were pitch black. I didn't turn on the lights.

I walked straight past the modern furniture, past the kitchen where I had measured his pills for eighteen hundred mornings, and went into the small study.

I knelt down beside the desk.

I took the tiny brass key from the chain around my neck and unlocked the bottom drawer.

Inside lay a stack of heavy paper.

Arlo’s sketchbooks.

I lifted the top folder with both hands. The scent of old drafting paper and dried ink hit me instantly. I sat down on the hardwood floor and turned the pages under the faint glow of the streetlamps outside.

Every line was bold and deliberate. Arlo had designed with heart. He had drawn bridges, public parks, and sunlight hitting glass walls. On the bottom corner of a blueprint for a small pavilion, his handwriting was scribbled in faded pencil: *For Kat. The light will always find you here.*

I traced the letters with my thumb.

A tear didn't fall. My eyes were completely dry.

For five years, I had thought I was saving Arlo by keeping his heart beating in another man's chest. I had cooked, cleaned, stayed quiet, and swallowed every insult just to guard that pulse.

Sitting on the floor in the dark, the truth was finally clear.

I hadn't been keeping Arlo alive.

I had spent five years slowly disappearing. I had buried my talent, my voice, and my dignity inside a marriage that was never real. Kian wasn't my husband. He was a cage.

I closed the sketchbook softly.

Something inside me turned hard and still. The grief was gone. In its place was a cold, sharp resolve.

I was done disappearing.
