Chapter 3

Nancy stood up.

She didn't rush. She smoothed her skirt first. Adjusted her pearls. Then she rose, slowly, like she was preparing to deliver a sermon.

"Enough," she said.

Her voice cut through the silence. Clear. Commanding. The voice she used when she needed everyone to listen.

"I've sat here long enough watching this... this spectacle." She looked around the table. At the relatives. At the people who'd been nodding along with Desmond ten minutes ago. "You all know my son. You know the kind of man he is. Good. Decent. Patient."

She turned to face me.

"And you know what she is." Nancy's finger pointed at me. "Barren. Five years of marriage and not one child. Not one."

Aunt Deborah nodded. Uncle Walter shifted in his seat but didn't argue.

"God himself judged her unfit," Nancy continued. Her voice rose. Righteous. Certain. "A woman who can't give her husband a child has failed in the most basic duty. In my day, a wife like that had the decency to step aside."

She paused. Let the words settle.

"Desmond sought comfort elsewhere because his own home was cold. Empty. Childless." Nancy's hand pressed to her chest. "What man wouldn't?"

Murmurs around the table. A few heads nodding. The same people who'd watched the footage, now searching for a way to reshape it into something they could live with.

I felt my hand move. My palm pressed flat against my stomach before I realized I was doing it.

I caught myself. Stopped.

Nancy saw it. She smiled. Thin. Triumphant.

I reached for the folder I'd carried from the study. The one I'd left on the sideboard. My hands didn't shake. Not anymore.

I opened it. Pulled out the first document.

Hospital admission form. My name. A date from three years ago. November fourteenth.

I set it on the table.

Then the surgical report. Then the discharge summary.

Then the photographs.

I didn't say anything. I just passed them down the table. One by one.

The first photo showed my abdomen. Purple bruises spread across my ribs in the clear shape of knuckles. The second showed my side. Dark contusions wrapping around to my back. The third was my face. Swollen. One eye nearly shut.

The timestamp in the corner of each photo matched the hospital date.

Uncle Walter picked up the surgical report. His face went gray.

Aunt Deborah stared at the photograph in her hands. She didn't put it down. She just stared.

I spoke quietly. "Three years ago, Desmond and I had an argument. About his gambling. About money he'd lost that week." I paused. "He beat me. In our bedroom. He didn't stop until I couldn't stand."

Nancy opened her mouth.

I kept going. "I was four months pregnant."

The room went still.

"I miscarried in the hospital six hours later." My voice stayed level. Flat. "The cause of death is listed on page three. Blunt force trauma to the abdomen. Consistent with assault."

One of Desmond's cousins — I didn't remember his name — pushed his chair back. The legs scraped loud against the floor. He stood up. Walked to the window. Didn't look at anyone.

Nancy sank into her chair. Slowly. Her hand still on her pearls but not gripping them anymore. Just resting there. Her mouth moved but nothing came out.

Desmond stood. Fast. Too fast.

"She fell," he said. His voice was loud. Sharp. "She was clumsy. She tripped on the stairs. I told her to be careful—"

"There are no stairs in the bedroom," I said.

He turned to me. "You're lying."

I picked up another document. Police report. Filed the same night. Officer's notes describing my injuries. A statement I gave in the hospital. Desmond's name circled in red pen.

"The police took photographs," I said. "They asked if I wanted to press charges. I said no. I was scared. I thought he'd change."

I set the report on the table.

"He didn't."

Desmond's hands opened and closed at his sides. "You fell. You're making this up. You—"

"The doctor's signature is at the bottom," I said. "The hospital has the records. The police have the file. The photographs have timestamps."

I looked around the table. At all of them.

"I have copies," I said. "For everyone."

Nobody spoke.

Aunt Deborah set the photograph down like it was burning her fingers. She pushed her chair back. She didn't look at Desmond. She didn't look at anyone.

Uncle Walter folded the surgical report closed. He stared at the table.

Milani sat very still in the armchair. Her hand was on her belly again. But this time it wasn't a performance. This time she looked afraid.

Nancy's face had gone slack. The righteous certainty was gone. She looked old suddenly. Small.

Desmond stood in the middle of the room. Alone.

I picked up the remote again.

"There's more," I said.
